I work on vintage audio gear, but I also use a ResMed AirSense CPAP. I can tell you that Ozone does in fact degrade foam. I know because I have seen loudspeakers (with foam surrounds) used in rooms with Ozone generators, where the foam surround falls apart in just a year or two. Normally, foam surrounds last 15-20 years. I do not use Ozone for anything, as it is a health hazard in and of itself.
I was supplied with a Res Med airsence 10 in August of this year and it's a great machine, it has done wonders for me. When I picked it up and inquired about a so clean system the rep at the medical supply company out right told me don't use it, he doesn't even sell them and don't buy one off the internet, he said stay away from them. He was adamant about it but wouldn't say why other than it's just cheaper to use soap and water and left it at that. I didn't get one and now I'm glad I didn't. Keep up the good work and thanks.
I had soclean for five years clean masks mainly now only . AirTouch F20 cushion. They do not recommend cleaning masks in soclean, foam cushions look great, recleaning 10 masks 2 or 3 years old smell fresh
Just wanted to thank you! You made it so easy to remove my damaged green foam due to using An ozone cleaner for 3 to 3 and a 1/2 years. I am a great grandmother and used your video to do the work it was so easy I really appreciate you and all of your videos keep up the good work! Thank you again🥰
Love your channel. I just wanted to report an observation on this situation, I bought a used DS1 in Sept 2023 from a widow with the plan to use your Drain Weevil method to extract the foam and use it as a backup device. The machine was purchased new in 2021 in Jakarta, known for hi-humid hi-tropical heat, bad particulate air pollution. The DS1 had been used nightly in Jakarta for two years but with NO water heater/humidifier attachment installed and the unit was never cleaned with Ozone. The former owner never knew and was apparently never informed about the foam recall. The Drain Weevel extraction was successful and the foam blocks were removed in single pieces and exhibited good structural integrity. Removal left no residual dust or crumbles other than what the weevil shredded. In fact, the black PU foam was in much better condition than I was expecting given all the noise and outcry about how bad it was supposed to be. The fan housing had a layer of black soot like substance on the inside of the cover and a small amount of same on the impeller blades similar to what appears on the air INTAKE filter. That experience is enough to make me think the Ozone may be the primary culprit. Take a read of a Material Safety Data Sheet for Ozone, it is highly chemically reactive and generally very bad news. I think Philips has a point. SoClean's lawsuit may not be enough to save them from liability.
Just gotta tell you THANKS!!! the instructions you gave were great and allowed me to make my own decision about, in my case-removing, the foam in my Resmed machine. Also thanks for giving the quick "rebuild" instructions, very helpful. Finally thanks for your analysis of the safety of foam in the Resmed. You struck a good balance between "everything is ok..." and " ... for now". My machine is as quiet now without the foam as it ever was with the foam and I'm much more comfortable using the machine this way. In fact I found myself holding off on using the machine since foam-gate began, so who knows, maybe you added a couple of years to my life!!
Just started using a CPAP Machine was lucky enough to get a ResMed 11 (insurance covered it). Glad I saw this video. going to stick to soap and water. Thanks
I just started APAP this week and snagged the ResMed 11 too. I’m using Seventh Generation fragrance-free dish soap and absolutely won’t use one of these ozone cleaners after watching your videos. Great channel for beginners!
Thank you so much for taking the time to educate me(us) on this. I've been on CPAP 22 YRS. We bought the SOCLEAN just before the Pandemic shut down but I stopped using it when I it began to smell like it was cooking it. I have a new Airsense 10 as of August 2020 and have not used the SOCLEAN AT ALL. My husband got his at the same time but continued on with SOCLEAN, BUT, stopped with Philips as a general warning. Now we can open up his and see. Thank you again.
VERY IMPORTANT: There are **3** pressure sensors, not two. There is one on the back of the PCB, but it connects to a clear/white rubber gasket while the top two connect to a blue gasket. It is easy to accidentally misalign that back sensor. If you miss this sensor, the machine will blast you with max pressure, and then will only output very low pressure afterwards regardless of settings.
Actually, I think I found it, and I'm wondering if it's a piece that is where the motor connects to the humidifying chamber, just under the screw for the PCB.
so, that indeed is it... and resolved the problem I was having after reassembling. took it apart again, made sure to get that sucker lined up, and boom! pressure back to functioning properly!!! thank you!!!
Thanks so much for this great info. I recently replaced my Dream Station 1 with the Air Sense 10. I have never used an ozone cleaner on any of my cpap machines. I removed the foam from my Dream Station & it was in good shape. I'm very relieved that there is no issues with the Air Sense 10 foam if no ozone cleaner was used. Thanks for all your great & informative videos.
Just took mine apart (AirSense 10), I was so inspired! Some notes: - The ribbon cable for the heated hose can be popped off at the top. The end is slotted, so it can only go back one way by just pushing it in gently. It seems to be held by friction. - Same ribbon cable can have the slack taken up by rotation the hose coupler all the way towards the tank (might have that backwards, but you'll be able to see while you're doing it.) With the slack taken out, it won't get stuck between the hose coupler and the frame (like I just did!). Great video, everything went super easy with just a T10 bit, brilliant!!! Thanks Uncle Nicko!
I am a retired water treatment professional. And lab analyst. Ozone is a very good disinfected but is also highly corrosive. I knew better than to run it through my machine. I hand clean my machine and my wife's machine.
How do you clean the inside tubing and turbine parts of the machine? Because if the tubing and masks can get dirty, so can the parts inside prior to them where the air flows.
Thanks for the information. I worked at the EPA monitoring ambient ozone levels in the past. I always wondered what the ozone generated from those So Clean machines would do to the plastic inside the CPAP machines. I didn't know that Respironics used sound insulating foam inside their machines. My machine was recalled and I got a new ResMed AirCurve 10 ASV machine now. I would not recommend using ozone gas made by high intensity UV lights for anything with plastic or foam inside it.
Thank you for your great honest info. Have forwarded to many friends using CPAPS here in the states !!! Glad I found you a while back ! I have the Air Sense 10; never could afford that cleaner lol never thought being short of cash would be so lucky lololol!!!
When I first got my Philips CPAP I had nothing but trouble with it. Constantly bringing it back with pressure issues to it shutting off. Finally about after six months, there were so many things wrong with it, they allowed me to get a Resmed 10. When they were reviewing the machine, it actually broke more on them during the appointment. This is apparent that so clean is responsible for these issues but I will never get a Philips CPAP ever again.
Thanks bro, yeah absolutely loving it mate. Evening walks along the beach with beer in hand most nights. Good times. Kids are loving being back at School and making new friends too. Now it's my turn to make a few haha. Cheers legend. Nicko
Weird…when I got my Dreamstation it was brand new. I never once used ozone or any cleaner like that. Yet I seen these particles they were 100% foam (identical to the ones in this video) and happened 3 times over the span of me owning the device (9months). I really want to spread this because if this happened to me it must happen to everyone. It’s a little concerning. I spent 1100$ of money I didn’t have to get a resmed airsense 10 with a mask. I really hope i don’t have to worry about the foam. I mean for god sakes how hard is it to make something safe that works. I wear this uncomfortable mask every night to not die young. That’s it. That is the entire reason why I have a cpap machines. Would really love to know it doesn’t defeat the purpose and kill me slowly every night!
Another high quality video. Thanks for your time and effort, it shows in the production value. Good information, and your high moral fiber shines through with every honest video. You are awesome sir! Keep it up!
Hoorayyy! Took apart 2 units, safely, and both work great. THANKS, BUNCHES! One was a 1 yr old. The other is easily 5+ yrs old. Foam was still in great shape.
Nick. I got a shock yesterday. Received my new dream-station 2. I was totally surprised to get a new one this quick from the recall. It is very nice, quiet. Easy to set up. And now I will be able to sleep better and feel safe. Thanks for all your help and info.
glad to hear you get a replacement from Phillip. At least they (from Phillip) would make sure the new machine doesn't have foam. Need to follow up with my replacement.
Nicko thank you for the video. I got my res med air sense 10 a year ago and was wondering what my foam would look like. After spending no longer then 30 minutes taking apart and putting back together seems like my foam is good. I can finally not stress out about this. I encourage anyone reading this to check there foam if you are worried about the foam dust as it's not hard to take apart and put back together. Thank you again brother!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey mate, i appreciate the comment. I would like to add though that unless you have been using ozone then there's probably no need to take it apart as you could potentially stuff up putting it back together etc. Only really required if you've been a medium to long term user of ozone and or have seen foam particles in your chamber. Glad you managed to check it out though. Cheers
@@CPAPReviews Nicko I forgot to mention I did buy a so clean2. The stupidest $350 US dollars I've ever spent I used it maybe 20 times. So I had to find out. Like I said your video was pretty straight forward you didn't leave anything out. Thanks from the USA
Today I received a new AirSense 10 to replace my 2015 AirSense 10 for the "Motor life exceeded, contact care provider" message. The old one had 22,370 hours on it And I never used a ozone cleaner. So I decided to dissect the old one to have a peek at the foam. There was no degradation at all. At most there was a trace of dust in the turbine blades. Thanks for the videos
I remember when I first heard of ozone when I started my cpap journey back in June of this year. Even before getting my deathstation I knew ozone wasn't a good cleaning solution just because I studied chemistry in college and it was used on certain labs for some glassware and they advised you had to be out of the lab when the cleaner was in use. Even then, the preferred method was soap and water for most things.
i have used divillbiss mechines for 16 years .....have had no such problems with the foam ...i use only warm water with a little mild soap only,,,,, have stipped them checked for any dust etc ,,,,,,have washed the foam in the same solution ......they still work fine and are reserve machines one haveing had over 28,000 hours of use,,,,,,, i now use a resmed 10 mechine which i dont strip to clean as it is a hire mechine only clean outside,,,, far to over priced to buy with only 2 years garentee,,, looking to buy a new devillbiss mechine more up to date than my old ones.......i see these are all sold out on your sponcer site,,,,,,long life mechines ,,,,no problems and cheaper,,,,,,thanks a bunch for your magic video,s fella
Thanks Nick for a most informative channel. Been on APAP for 11 months. I'm kind of a do it yourselfer so I haven't been back to the place that gave me the machine because it's a long drive and appointment required. Your videos have helped me make huge improvements in my treatment. I was spending most of my nights with 85-92 SPO2 readings. Now I'm in the 90 to 98 all night now that I know what the clinical settings do. I'm not as sleepy during the day either. Thank you.
Thanks Nick, Fantastic video on SoClean and ResMed safety and how to check whether your foam is breaking down or not. I could never understand how any CPAP manufacturer thought it was a good idea to put a sound abatement foam in the air pathway of a medical device. Whether the foam is safe or not, it can't be changed without opening up your Resmed Airsense 10 with a screwdriver tool and removing the Torx screws.
Great vid. Cleaned my Resmed Airfit 10 following your instructions. Got to see the innards of my unit after suspecting that it may be making me sick. Not too dirty after 4 years of use, but I am immunocompromised, so any little thing can set me off. Cleaned as much as I could and I feel much better knowing that I did some cleaning. Keep up the great work! 🤙🏽
Thanks for all the information you have provided. I started using CPAP in 2020. I have a Resmed 10 and was using So clean the whole time. I tore it apart yesterday because the motor was getting loud later at night during higher pressure and waking me up. After tearing it a part I found that the foam that was in it was starting to break apart. I currently am not putting So Clean thru the machine anymore but the damage has been done and there is no one to go back on because they both deny. So Clean should pay to have the motor replaced. I am doing the work thanks to you .
Thanks for your videos. I had the DreamStation and after FoamGate purchased 2 AirCurve 10's. One is my daily and one is my travel. I knew before foam gate that the CPAP companies said OZONE would void the warranty, so I never used it but I questioned my DME on why they would sell something that would void a warranty. They didn't answer..... I have no idea if my health has been impacted by my bipap machine, but I can tell you, without it, I am not sure what shape I would be in! So thankful for a good nights rest!
Commercial ozone generators are often used in remediation after house fires. It’s recommended that all persons vacate the premises during operation with venting the home after the ozone treatment. Ozone can deteriorate many plastics, foams, and other material. I would never use it to clean a medical device unless specifically recommended by the manufacturer and certified by a nation certification agency. Cleaning my CPAP and assorted equipment I am using a vinegar/water mix, a good rinse, and air drying on a regular basis. Filters are replaced regularly.
Nick, thanks for another really useful video. I love how your content is there simply to help the viewer with no filler, no filter (hey, it's a foamgate pun!), and no bullsh!t. Been watching your content for a few weeks but have now subscribed. Just wondering if you have previously made a CPAP cleaning video? Thanks.
Hey mate, glad to hear you're enjoying the vids. Yeah i try to keep them laid back and easy to understand /watch although i know the topic is boring as bat shit. I'm going to do some cleaning vids soon mate as a lot of the info has recently updated due to the foamgate etc. Cheers. Nicko
I just got my AirSense 10 a couple weeks ago, so I'm glad sticking to plain ol' Dawn dish soap for my mask and hose and not trying to run anything through the machine itself ought to keep it going for a very long time.
Very informative, thank you. I've been disassembling and reassembling since the late 1950's... Also, I had a 'feeling' that something must be wrong with those cleaners but had NO idea why.
Another great video Nick! I’m always happy when people come to our FB page and ask about whether they should buy a SoClean and the advice is a resounding “NO!” then that individual decides not to buy.
Hi Kath, thank you! I know there's been plenty going on with the Admin crew and i'm sorry i have been absent. I'll be back on tomorrow. Moving house at the moment so it's all a bit cray cray. Cheers mate. Nicko
@@CPAPReviews Hey Nick…we, the admin crew are doing fine. I’m back from my brief journey to the forest and life will be back to normal. Family always comes first which includes moving. Love to all! Cheers mate!
Been using a res med c-pap without using this "So clean" and haven't had any problems or particles. Seems to me the "Cleaner" is the problem not the foam in the c-pap. The cleaner may be to abrasive or harsh and the chemicals may cause the foam to break down vs just normal use without it is just fine.
I have two different ozone cleaners, but the SoClean is too expensive. I used to clean both of our Airsense 10 machines with the ozone cleaner, but my wife complained about the residual smell. I didn't care for it either and now I only clean the hoses with it. I've never noticed any particles in my water tanks so I don't believe I have an issue since I didn't clean my machines for that long of a time to affect them. Now I know what to look for. Thanks!
I have an AirSense 10 and only clean the mask/hose with it. The 2 times I actually ran it through the whole unit there was a notable ozone smell in my bedroom. Running it through the mask/hose entirely contained within the SoClean there's no ozone smell at all. The hose and mask are regular replacement items, so I'm not worried about them degrading before they're replaced.
Thanks, this gave me piece of mind after using soclean for about 6 months. Filter still looked great. Also i took the cellular cable off from the side piece not the main board cause i didnt want to break it lol
Great video and information Nick. I just started using a CPAP (AS10) and when I saw the title of the video I was like OH NO!! But continued watching and was relieved that the breakdown in foam was due to using ozone cleaners. Cheers and keep up the great work.
Thanks mate, appreciate the comment! I have a bad habit of scaring people so i do apologise. Yes certainly nothing to worry about if you've never used an ozone device but even if you had have, i don't think you need to worry, it's just something to keep an eye out for. Cheers for the great comment. Nicko
Excellent video, Nico. I use the AirSense 10 every evening. My current machine is 4.5 years old. The only time I use Ozone to clean anything is with my Sleep8 cleaner, and I only use it to sanitize my tube. I clean the reservoir with soap and water, then put it in a UV chamber along with the mask and head gear to sanitize those. Since I do not run ozone directly into the water reservoir and hence into the machine, I'm concluding that my foam should be as good as it was when new like the one you show in this video when you disassembled the machine.
Hi mate! From Brazil here. I've just bought a ResMed AirSense 10 VAuto (quite expensive bit). And now I'm appalled to know that it has a precoded expiration date, it also has filter issues, as well. I was diagnosed with ALS back in 2019, and can get 63 events/hr without the Bipap. Started using a Philips Respironics Dreamstation, until just last month. I've been following your channel and videos and learning all I can. Thank you so much for the information you share. Keep it up. Thank you
I often wondered how the geniuses who build these things haven't introduced an additional in line air filter between the machine and patient. Typically the machines filtration is way below the standard for forcing particulates in a person's face for hours at a time.🤔 Not only should this be standard safety practice it would also help eliminate potential foam poisoning. Now.if a problem with filtration and humidity is an issue then the extra filter could be installed south of the humidifier still keep foam from entering ones airways.😎👍
@@Motojourneys unfortunately that's not how it works. It was strictly sound abatement and used incorrectly. Sound abatement foam can be used as long as it's not involved in the process of supplying air to the patient.
I watched this a few weeks ago. All the sudden one night I was hearing a low humming noise from my ResMed 10. A couple days later I found foam I'm my water tank. I have yet to take it apart to look at the motor. I did inspect what I could see and only found it in the water tank. Thankfully I think the water tank is catching the majority of the foam. Thanks for the information. It has been very helpful. Also because of foamgate. Nobody has a loaner CPAP machine to use if you need to send yours in to get fixed. And if you buy a new one there may be a wait before you get it. Also I saw one company say one machine per person. I guess people bare stocking up.
@@CPAPReviews Really wasn't anything to take pics of. The foam was totally gone. There was one piece about the size of a bean left in the motor. There was some debris in the water tank. This obviously has been going on for awhile. I cleaned everything the best I could. Probably should of had a picture of my face when I pulled the motor cover off and nothing was there. Lol
I have a resmed 10 for over two years now. I also have a SoClean2. I do not hook up the SoClean2 to my resmed. You do not have to connect the two! Just replace the filter. I don't think you need to "clean" your water. Problem solved. Don't make it harder than it has to be. My foam is still fully intact and problem is averted.
I used a SoClean for a period with my 10 and after a year or so the machine made quite a groaning / whining sound during use due to an apparent internal leak of some sort. My provider replaced the device thankfully and I stopped using the SoClean and the AirSense 10 has been good for years now. I use a Sleep8 for my tubing and mask (and I stick the humidifier reservoir in there without the seal) but no ozone through the machine and things have been fine. I think for sure ozone can degrade the materials (even the silicone gets oxidized - you can see it turn a slight brown color after sanitizing), the hose and headset get replaced at regular intervals - not the same for the machine!
I'm using my ResMed AirSense 10 since over 3 years. It came never in touch with ozon. I dissampled the maschine last week and my foam looks perfect. I think that the ozone is the reason for disintegrated foam not the foam itself. But to be fair, I also never used the water tank.
This is where your info is off my Friend. I have been using a Airsense 10 for 6 years now ( BTW I watched your video on changing the motor that I bought on Amazon for $127.00 US. And aside from installing the motor backyards the 1st time....MY FAULT...... Your Video Save ME .............BIG TIME.) I have been using my So Clean for 5 1/2 years and I have had no problems. I'm just seeing your video today (2/23/2024) or I would have taken pictures of my foam.
Thanks but my info is not off. I've seen it firsthand and have hundreds of pics and emails. Secondly, read some of the comments on this vid. P.S. next time a youtube helps you out, don't be afraid to throw them a few bucks to say thanks. Cheers
I work for a major cpap supplier and we also sell So clean, i myself have never sold one to my patients bc before i started with my company, i did my own research about what ozone truly was and I'm so damn glad i did. I KNEW from research it was TOXIC and should not be even in the same sentence with clean. Anyway I'm glad you showed me this bc I've been asked time and again if Resmed is safe. And i KNEW THE so clean was not safe. They deserve to be sued bc they charge a ton of money and they keep charging money bc if the filters and adapters needed to keep it running. Ugh what a waste. Thank you for your videos I've sent them to my boss bc i think she needs to know what's truly happening with the DS1 AND 2 and the recall. Thank you so much
Great video Nicko. Love your work. Now I know how to take apart my S10 (not that I plan to but it was nice to see the components inside). Just one point. I would not use the Dewalt driver (even with clutch) to screw back the screws. Best people tighten by hand otherwise they run the risk of sheering the threads if they overtighten with the electric screwdriver (or forget to put the clutch setting). You've probably done this thousands of times and know when to stop but if people are doing it for the first time they may run the risk of damaging the components.
Hey legend, glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the great tips! Yeah i would not normally use a power drill mate but i was a bit stuck and just needed to get the job done haha. You know how it is. Appreciate the great advice though. All the best brother. your mate, Nicko
I am with you on your advice, as well as using a hand operated screwdriver I also gently turn to screw backwards to locate the start of the thread, this means the screw engages the original thread in the plastic and greatly negates the possible damage to the hole. I repair most of my electrical appliances because often a small single component causes failure and parts are unavailable or prohibitively expensive. I also make a point of enquiring about the availability of spare parts and their cost when I purchase a new appliance!
I have a homemade cpap cleaner. I got a small aquarium ozone generator and connected it to the top of the water via a regular O2 hose. This goes into the tank through a hole in the top of the tank and runs down to the bottom of the tank. With the tank filled, I start the ozone generator and then manually start the cpap and lt cycle it 2 or 3 times. This method works well and cost about $25. The generators last for at least 2-3 years. BTW I live in SW Florida, home to molds, fungus, and all the rest of creepy crawlies. My only precaution is that the generator must be mounted higher than the tank or the water will leak out.
You glossed over an important item at 15:22. It is important to get the 'C' fitting on the blower housing slid on to the "T" fitting on the case. You do it correctly, but it is very easy to get the 'C" fitting sitting on top of the "T" fitting. Everything will go back together, possibly with some extra force. But the pressure sensing seals won't work well enough.
I've recently noticed some dusty floaters in water chamber of my 7 month old ResMed APAP several days after changing to replacement chamber of Airsense 10. Not using Soclean, just White vinegar & water mix & use a cotton swab to clean around edges if necessary. Keeping close watch for any particles of dust like matter. The machine is through DME provider APRIA Healthcare under Medicare. Contract. 🤠
I have a 4 year old DreamStation. Used only distilled water and did SoClean it regularly. Recently took it apart to get the foam out after the recall. Foam was in perfect condition. I am not trying to defend Phillips only wanted point out that perhaps SoClean is not the only factor.
What i find interesting is that my DME called and offered me a "free" cleaner and when i asked what was it, they said an ozone cleaner. Keep in mind the recall was already happening.
I had bits of foam in my Phillips Remstar 450P, took it all apart and much of the foam was breaking down, so I took all of it out and cut bits of polyethylene foam to match and re-assembled. I never used any cleaner except for weekly soaking the tank and hose in white vinegar to clean off the water deposits.
Ive heard some people refer to that foam donut as a "filter", but it is not. That foam is sound insulation. The machine would run fine without it, it will just be a little louder.
I used the SoClean device only twice on my Resmed Cpap machine and stopped because the tubes and nasal pillows started to smell very strange afterwards. I threw away both tubes plus nasal pillows. Then had my Resmed 10 machine inspected to see it those two instances of using SoClean damaged my Resmed 10 Cpap. I also returned the SoClean for a full refund. Just use vinegar, light soap, warm water to clean your Cpap.
Your video just answered some of my questions and helped me remove the small piece of foam that was still remaining in my machine. I couldn’t get the foam out of the motor though so we will see if it continues to show up in the reservoir.
Why would someone use ozone on the machine itself..?? I understand daily cleaning the mask and water camber. And occasionally cleaning the hose. But why the machine..?? Thanks!! Love your videos..!!
Hey mate, that's a great question. The answer is that until SoClean arrived, there was no real way to clean inside the cpap itself. They get pretty filthy man, i've taken many machines apart over the years and they can get all mouldy, dusty and filthy and ozone was a way to sanitise / sterilise the internal components. It's actually a great idea but unfortunately there are some serious drawbacks which the manufacturers are now finding a few years after they became popular. Cheers
Nick - what I'm finding in my water container on a ResMed 11 is something black but NOT foam. Rather, it looks like these small floating, clear gel substance. And when I touch one of the little floaties with a paper towel, it attaches to the towel and in a short time, turns black. I saved these towels with black spots in baggies. Then I put a NEW water container on the machine, and opened a new bottle of distilled water. The next day, there were more clear floaties that turned black. I poured the remaining water into a clear container and the floaties turned black in that container within a day. I have saved this stuff but don't know what to do with it! I WANT TO KNOW WHAT THAT IS! I clean the water bowl, the hoses and nose pads with water with Dawn detergent and a little bleach. I never got this black stuff with the Dream Station before they recalled it, and I've only had the ResMed since Oct of 21 (right at a year). What do you think?
great video champion. my airsense is 6 yrs old. never heard of this foam issue. also never heard of or used Soclean. but i'm gonna take my machine apart and have a look. well done. love how you do this all for us to view. cheers.
Thanks for the great comment mate. It did surprise me that it took so many years for the manufacturers to start warning the users. I think at first they were quite happy to have a product that could clean the internal components but it's turned out to be a nightmare! Best wishes. Nick
@@CPAPReviews I’m lucky, I have 2. I travel a lot for work and if I go on a short trip I take the old one. If I go on a long trip I swap out the body the night before and take the new one the next morning.
I disassembled my unit only to find that the sponge had started to deteriorate. I removed it as it is only a noise damper. Problem solved! No noise difference after removal.....not that I can hear. Don't forget to air blow motor before assembly as you might have sponge particles attached to the impeller. I have been using SoClean on my resmed AirSense 10 for over 5 years. The color of my sponge was green and the deterioration was negligible, but I removed it nonetheless as a precaution.
Hey Nick, small world, I have that exact same tool kit way up here in the Pacific Northwest , USA. ITS GREAT for working on small equipment. (HomeDepot). . Sounds like foam gate is really becoming a donnybrook however, a lawsuit for 200 million? That's small compared to problem. Buggers have no balls :-) William Shatner used to advertise for them, I hope they don't involve him - he is so happy about going into space recently. You're on top of ozone chemistry so I won't go into but it probably wasn't a good idea. I worked in the semiconductor industry before retiring and we used ozone bubbles through water baths to clean off organic contamination of the wafers. "THAT WAS A GOOD APPLICATION " because it did not generate a hazardous chemical to be disposed of. Sounds like somebody didn't look at the MSDS for Ozone. I was lucky, in that my CPAP technician at my respiratory supplier did not recommend that. On a new subject, I suspect sleep studies are still not effective especially with covid - I saw your video on that. Mine were tedious. Being watched in a strange place, to get readings, then getting results, then going back for another with the new settings. Ya know we old guys get up a lot and my clinicians would only read in RIM state. Plus I have not has correction since then as my primary care physician doesn't monitor me but my respiratory service will do a reading. At the moment I'm having airflow problems so I am taking my machine in to check it out next week. I only use 6 psi and the metal in the water chamber is turning light brown, so something is out of whack. I may want to look into that phone app you talk about. Do you think malt Scotch instead if water would be better than water in the tank :-). ? Know your busy but one more thing that is universal - CPAP and Dogs. Whenever I put my CPAP on and feel that air I think of dogs sticking their noses out a car window and sniffing the air, so I call CPAP air, my DOG air. Always enjoy your enthusiasm and information. Sorry for the long post. Take care of the Family, Cheers, Bob.
Hey Bob, i too like your post and also your name! I really wanted to name my son Bobby but my wife wasn't as keen and as you know it's a two way street when it comes to naming (well for some anyway). I love the Dog Air also but hopefully it doesn't smell too much like dog hahahah. Good luck with all the medico consultations mate, a lot of rookies out there so be careful. Lots of love Nicko
Nice one mate. Not cause for concern but definitely just be aware that the ResMed Foam components are also affected by Ozone and can break down over time. Cheers
Here is a way to protect your lungs should a foam degrades on your machine. The clinic that provided me a loaner to try out the airsense 10 had setup with a filter right after the outlet in the back (for slim line without heat) to the slimline tube. I suppose this is not 100% proof, but at least it helps block a good percentage of those particles.
I never use my SoClean everyday. Maybe once a month. If I get a cold or bronchitis then I’ll do it once a week. I always clean my mask with soap and water at least weekly. Ozone is not good to breath either. When I use my SoClean, I run the machine for at least 5 mintes to evacuate the ozone by holding my thumb intermittently over the hose end to simulate breathing otherwise the machine will stop. I also turned off the reporting to Resmed in the tech menu.
ResMed's manual mentions a warning not to use SoClean and ozone cleaners, but it's buried in the manual and hard to find. Happen to read the manual cover to cover because I was just starting CPAP.
I’m Fred that he mentions I’m the video. The manual that came with my ResMed has no mention of using a SoClean or any other type of ozone cleaner on it. They added to the newer manuals.
Thank You sooooo much for this info. I did buy the ozone cleaner about a year ago but only used it once and for whatever reason I decided not to use it again. Now I know why and not to give to anyone and just trash it. 😊
Thanks for helpful info. FYI I only use Ozone cleaning on water tank and hose once a week at most (water's changed out daily) but may cut ozone down to once a month, instead using liquid sanitizers like hydrogen peroxide or similar to avoid hose rubber deterioration (so far, so good). Perhaps Ozone would damage the Airsense 10 internal seals and sensor components over time (in areas of high Ozone pollution (Los Angeles, CA, etc.) foam would deteriorate over time) ? Was also good to learn Airsense 10's life's apparently about 25000 hours.
If you lived closer I would ship my So Clean that I stopped Using after 3 years, cus I'm 66 I don't think I'll be here when all this is done, At least a Now have a Res Med now, cheers great videos, ty .
Even without the foam breaking down these ResMeds put out a really nasty odor. Makes me wonder if I'm sucking toxic chemicals into my lungs all night long. In any case, excellent video, Nick. I feel better after seeing my foam intact.
Thanks for the great video. Easy to follow. I followed your instructions. When I opened the chamber, there was only a sliver of foam left. Unbelievable. I use a sonoclean. The thing is I only started to see the green fibers in the humidifier a few days ago. I always look in the tank when I refill. Never saw any before. Where could the foam have gone? This is a real mystery. So I am going to operate without the foam period. If you can think of something, please advise. Thanks much. Vito
Do you have to make the Boop sounds when removing screws? I think I didn't do the sound on a couple of screws and hope I'll be able to reassemble my unit
