Its been very many years since I visited the old International Market Place in Waikiki. I remember it like the back of my hand and it was very homespun in the 60's through the early 90's, but rather changed into Boutique Class mall since I saw it later. Gone were the day vendors and crowded aisles, the little one man carts and dollar trinkets that ranged from sea-shells to stuffed Koalas, Chinese toys, and such. I do recall rent was not 'prohibitive' but high even in those days. I used to know a lady who had an art gallery and sold 'Hawaiian and Local Artists'- and since I was selling my work, she was fair with the terms and conditions of sales.(at one time there must have been 20 big galleries, and smaller galleries in Waikiki...How different this all looks today, but Waikiki has changed a lot since I can remember. I heard they were going to tear the International Market Place out for a new Mall...The old one however had its extreme charm of old Hawaii...but was not 5 Star, Boutique Class.
Appreciate your feedback.. It sounds like you have fond memories of the old International Market Place in Waikiki, with its vibrant atmosphere and local charm. The transformation into a boutique mall marks a significant change, trading the bustling aisles and local vendors for a more upscale experience. While the new mall may offer modern amenities, it's understandable to feel nostalgic for the old market's authenticity and character.
They ruined that mall. A bunch of us enjoyed the old way it was before they went all high end. Put a ton of locals out of business with their trinket/tshirt/dress kiosks. Too high end now for most people to shop. Even liked the food court back then and the bar/restaurant with music up some stairs by the tree. Lots of dancing there with local musicians playing. Very disappointing when we went back and saw this place. We walked through several times on the way to the beach and saw probably one person in some shops and others empty. Kathleen
I agree 💯. They stole the 'soul' of Waikiki along with the Kuhio District. There used to be real Polynesian carvers making Tikis and other handmade souvenirs with palm leaves and lei Makers stringing plumeria and pikaki. So sad😢. Progress?? Meh! 😕
