A few months ago, I asked you which multi-tool you recommended for AR owners and you pointed me to the MUT and for that I am very grateful. It’s become indispensable as my daily carry and was exactly what I needed when my buddy’s AR had an otherwise difficult malfunction to remedy while on my last range trip. So, many thanks!
You forgot the other great thing about the knifeless rebar, it's legal to carry here in the UK! I have a surge for work as that falls in the category of "carrying with good reason" but I carry my rebar alongside a 91mm victorinox as my EDC.
Knifeless rebar is great for UK providing combination locking tool set, which with separate non locking blade knife enables legal carry here. As mentioned it is not promoted enough, I discovered it only after several leatherman reviews, outdoor shops in UK stock the standard rebar ? I finally got mine mail order.
Are you perchance in the UK? I'd like the knifeless Rebar to carry with one of my most carried EDC knives, the Spyderco Urban which is great, but it doesn't come with a pocket clip nor is it that easy to add one.
@@simonh6371 ....I carry the REBAR in an "ALPAKA" pouch that allows me to carry the bit kits and other tools. I have modified my REBAR to fit a pocket clip and also the bit adapter from the SURGE. I also have the Spyderco URBAN and modified both the URBAN and UKPK with carbon fibre scale inserts (1mm each) to thicken the grip. Both Spyderco's are HHs (so yes I am UK).
I never even looked into the MUT, and I would have never guessed it had a saw of that length! It looks comparable to a SAK 111mm saw length. I too really like the P4, and I found it easy to mod it (make the awl/reamer into a true awl/reamer). I just could not get past the tools flopping out of the handle when you opened the pliers, or the pliers failing to disengage after doing a hard squeeze on them. Thanks for sharing!
The Rebar without the knife is a great multitool when you live in Europe where there are very strict law’s against carrying a knife in public (in many countries). I live in Sweden and carry a multitool almost every day never had a problem on the country side but in a dens populated area there is a large likelihood that you get in trouble with a blade on you.
I prefer one-handed opening and closing a Charge+ blade but you make a good point. Free P4 is easier when using your left hand. My only gripe is that the mechanism for closing is a bit awkward in comparison.
I carried the MUT for years and just recently switched to the Signal for EDC but the MUT is still the GOAT for working hard. But I have the C4 version with the special plyers and the pointy tip to insert detonator into C4, a perfect tool to make marks on stuff when you work
@Ryan Duff I somtime work in decoration building ( for museum, fitness club or other stuff) and the MUT is very robust and usefull. But on a simple daily routine I carry the Signal
Free P2 has replaced my wave as a daily carry. The pocket clip and ease of opening makes it my favourite daily carry. It is so easy to grab and pocket as you walk out the door.
The free t4 is another that doesn't get enough credit. Paired with another knife like my 15V BBB Manix 2 it is great. The tools are fun fast and easy to get to and use. Also besides not having pliers it gives you most if not all of what you usually need daily. The skelatool is another great tool I've found myself starting to love. Before seeing your vids and txtoolcrib I never had good multitools, Now those and the swiss champ + Leatherman Surge is wonderful.
I love my T4. My charge TTI is too heavy to carry in may pocket every day, especially is I'm going to the office, but i never leave home with out my T4
The Rebar is one of the best tools Leatherman makes. It's compact, has a robust pair of pliers, and has a great toolset. I just wish the knifeless one was cheaper.
I love my P4 and I also am left-handed. I wish I could change the location of the pocket clip though. It just feels like pulling from the pocket and deployment of the pliers would be smoother with that clip positioned elsewhere.
My one and only Leatherman is the MUT and I've been carrying it for 6+ years. The only thing I've replaced is the pouch because the hook and loop stopped grabbing. The bit kit makes it darn near perfect too. 👍🍻
As a Project Manager of a construction company, and avid outdoorsman, I love my P4. On the job site it’s tough enough if I need it. In the office it’s a great fidget toy. Outdoors I find it the perfect toolset. Seems like the file, the lack of the “pointy-ness” of the awl, and the bit driver are it’s biggest complaints. I’d like to see bit driver and pointy awl, but I love full serrated blade and big scissors. Seems like with the Arc I won’t be able to get bit driver without losing the serrated blade for the full size file. Maybe magnacut is so good you don’t need serrated?
👌Great video. I've been carrying my original 1995 supertool for years in the outdoors, but I think it's time to get an update 😉. I've looked at both the Surge and the P4. I liked your comments on the P4 and have also watched Clay Hayes video on it. The main things I don't like on the P4 are the stupid little measuring tool/depth guage and the small size of the file. I look forward to your rebuild video. 👍😊
So when you asked me to look at the plier head, I saw what I needed to see. The jaws don't close all the way down, useless to me. The replaceable wire cutter is cool, but if the pliers are just going to frustrate me, I'll just walk out to my truck and get a real pair of pliers. I have multiple multi-tools, they've typically ended up a crap shoot on how useful they truly are.
Thanks for sharing… sort of. I thought, with my original PST (semi retired), Skeletool RX with Surge mod file & saw and long Mut drivers, Signal with Meto’s Q Branch bit holder and Surge mod file and ST300M mod saw, Crunch with a Weha bit kit and a mod recip saw blade, the discontinued Orange G10 Charge, and other bits, drivers and bobs, my Leatherman collection journey was complete and I had everything I could ever need or want! Then along comes Dominic with this video and I realize my lack of vision and feel the pull from the new Leatherman acquisition side again! Thanks, Thanks a lot man😄
@@maxlvledc Oh no …Sorry isn’t going to cut I it!🤔 And neither will the Knife-less Rebar! Unless I use the scissors … It does have scissors doesn’t..now I have to look! Thanks for sharing!
Will be looking forward for reviews on the Mut.Always think that it has other possibilities but we'll wait for your views, it usually gave us ideas in new projects. As for the P4, we've already mod a few with after market & generic parts making it a fidget gadget,!! Gave one to a mate who is a Cellar Man & he loves it, there is a market out there for one handed multitool. Cowabunga matey..!!
I always carry a separate knife (multiple in fact; I am using one exclusively for food related stuff for hygiene reasons) but I don't necessarily mind the extra blade on a multitool. That's the one I will use for "trash" jobs like cutting card board to not waste the edge on my main blade.
I kind of wish I'd bought the Rebar for an extra £10-15, instead of the Gerber MP600 bladeless which I never carry. I then went on to buy the standard Rebar which I can't EDC as I live in the UK, and the Bond after that, with added pocket clip, which I do carry but obviously it lacks scissors and woodsaw, so sometimes I carry that with my Victorinox Farmer X for a very capable but street legal toolset. If the Rebar knifeless could be easily fitted with a pocket clip I'd probably buy one, it would be great carried with my Spyderco Urban or Manly Wasp.
@@maxlvledc I'm actually going to get a couple of those for my Victorinox Farmer and farmer x...so yes if those are as good as I have heard, I might do that
@@maxlvledc I won't. ARs are illegal in Canada due to our retarded government, but I'm sure that it'll be useful for servicing my 12 gauge and my .22 lr
The Free series might not be the best blue collar multitool as Ben from Texas tool crib has pointed this out. But for people who want a good and nice EDC multitool it is actually a good choice IMO. I've heavily modded a Wave and it is way overkill for my needs. On the other hand a P2 is more than capable for a day to day EDC needs, don't you think?
I was one of the doubters on Leatherman and the whole made/assembled in America. That they lost a bunch of lawsuits by their customers. So I did my own research on Leatherman multi tools and knives. All their multi tools and knives are 85% manufactured in the USA except the all the files they came from Europe, the Pliers which mostly made in Mexico (some are made in the USA) and fasters no country listed. They have been sued by their owners (maybe other manufacturers?) about the made in the USA. Leatherman has never lost a lawsuit bought against them because they are 85% or higher made in the USA. Now this is sticking point almost all of their accessories are made overseas (China) except the files which I already have said are made in Europe. Now you hear Berry Sheaf Compliant with the exception of the MOLLIE sheaf all Leatherman’s Sheath’s are made in China. I know I have said things in the past and I was wrong. I also went through one of their competitors multi tool and knife line out of 362 multi tools and knives that they sell it are split between all made in the USA 181 products in the USA and PRC & Taiwan 181 of their products are made in overseas. Their sheaf’s if it is MOLLIE or for a multi tool or knife being made for the USA are made in the USA and all their leather sheaths are manufactured for them by companies in the USA. So I opened my big mouth and put my foot in it with checking and going by hearsay. For anything to get The Made In USA it needs to be 75% or above and for Leatherman multi tools and knives they all meet that criteria with 85% with the exception of accessories and Sheaths. I apologize for stating the wrong things.
@@maxlvledc I thought the same thing Surge Wave and Charge but apparently to multi tool site I got my information the multi tools and knives are all over the 75% at 85%. I have been buying and using more Leatherman’s products since finding this out. They cost more and some will bite the hand that bought them but they are all of good quality and value.
Well said. How much of the edc community worry about “metal shavings” think you should get together all the leathermans that make up a fantasy multi tool. Pick and mix style. 👍
Haha, I'm not the man to ask..imo ARs have one purpose..and I prefer to have a few other more versatile "items" first..a certain 12g is a higher priority
I am torn between buying a P2 or a P4. Is the advantage of carrying a tool that weighs less worth the loss of scissors? Does the P2 feel more comfortable to carry?
Just wanted to thank you for the very detailed information, so, thanks man. My latest video was partially inspired by the info on the mini ratchet drivers from your videos. I think it's something that may interest you, as I have gotten a ton of questions about it. Again, I appreciate the details you're providing us tool junkies.
I very much look forward to see you mod the Free P4, I've tried to move to the P4 after 15 years with the Wave, but i very much miss, both driver bit exchanger and the small driver that i often use for glasses and small kids toys ect
Thats the main reason I stuck with the Wave, the micro bit driver. Not just for glasses, but also getting into small areas and cracks that other tools can't reach.
@@Datsyukiandeke The first thing I took off my Wave was that tiny micro driver. Important to some, but I don't use it. That's what's great about multi-tools - make 'em like you want 'em! I'm glad LMan makes what you need!
Hi, can you do a video on the 4 in heritage safety scissors you recommended in a short a while back? I'm very interested in them, but I don't know if they'll be worth their weight in a pocket edc.
I didn't even know that Leatherman made a full size multi tool without a blade. It might be a tool to buy for people that do a lot of traveling that way they have the tool set without breaking any knife laws
Yes or for people like me in the UK where we're not allowed to carry locking or fixed blades ''without valid reason''. I think it's a better option than the Gerber MP600 bladeless.
@@maxlvledc is there a explanation as why that would be. I have traveled with metal tools in my backpack and they asked why I had it and what it was for and the TSA agent just said ok go on through after he put the tools back in my bag. It was a small ratchet and 1/4 drives and some of those drivers/bits were Philips and very pointy but they were fine with it.
I love the idea of a rebar, but the lack of pocket clip is holding me back. I don't want to use an adhesive one so I had the idea of drilling/tapping holes for a Civivi pocket clip or something.
I bought a Rebar despite this problem, and I've found that I like carrying it using a KeySmart Nano Clip. It stays where I want it in my pocket, and it's easy to get in and out. (I have a black version, but I only see stainless steel on Amazon right now.) I hooked it up with the integrated lanyard loop, and it does get in the way sometimes, but the tool is in my pocket more often than it's in my hand, so I like the tradeoff. I carry SAKs like this, too.
Can you talk about how to clean the P4? I’ve had mine since they first went on sale and now the blade is a little different to open and can’t be opened with one hand.
Honestly, a knife less rebar at about 75% of the size would be great. At that size it could take over the juice's vacated spot in the lineup. And actually I'd love to see the saw give way to a scalpel holder too. Still technically knifeless, but allows me to have a "craft blade". And as a pie in the sky feature give me the powerpint's bit holder. Then maybe you could squeeze in a way to carry 3 bits or so, in a holder a la the victorinox cybertool, instead of the 3d Phillips.
True but the Rebar is pretty compact - I don't own the knifeless version but the standard one so obviously it's the same form factor. Also bear in mind that tools like the saw would be pretty limited in usage at 75% of their size. The Rebar saw as it is, is a tiny bit shorter and a fair bit thinner than the saw on a standard Swiss Army Knife so any smaller and I feel it wouldn't be much use.
Hey could you talk about the issue what Ben pointed at , when he talked about when you put some force on the pliers then you want to close the tool back up , one of the arms will stick ( he mentioned it in the review video and right away that was a complete deal breaker ) . Thank you mate 👍.
What do you need a Wood Saw for on an AR-Platform Rifle? That is contrary to the claim of being a "Specialty tool." I am not sure how many soldiers say "Hey--I wish I could carry more weight." I understand people like the MUT, but it seems like an albatross.
@@maxlvledc I’m not saying a saw isn’t a useful tool. I’m saying it is not “specialist” relating to the AR. For me it ends up being too bulky and losing that specialist tool status. I’d just have preferred a truly specialist, focused tool.
@@maxlvledc There are plenty of available options if a saw is important. Something innovative with wrenches would have been a cool option. They instead have a separate tool.
I really like that grey colored sheath that came with the Free tool. Mine is a boring solid black but I much prefer that mid grey color. Do you know how much a grey colored sheath cost if I buy it separately?
I'd rather if they made a knifeless one I could fly with. The saw will definitely cause issues. They make the style PS, which is great. But I'd kind of like to keep a larger one in my travel backpack.
Not to/from U.K., pliers are still on the CAA banned list, and, as there is no size listed, unlike scissors, it means even my little Leatherman Style was confiscated
@@robcherry6734 oh, good to know. UK is insane. I flew into and out of there with my style, but they took a set of fix it sticks screwdrivers. They baffle me over there. Once they ruled the world, now they sell kitchen knives with rounded tips because their society can't handle the pointed ones any more. Wild.
@@maxlvledc sorry, $318.00 on Amazon., not $350. I didn’t check other retailers. Looks like they have several MUT options, another was $205, still pretty pricey. I’ll check other sources, sometimes Amazon shows some ridiculously high pricing to trap an idiot like me.
I think the knifeless Rebar is also really good for people who want a multi-tool but don't feel comfortable carrying a knife. For example, one of my relatives wanted a tool with pliers, scissors, and an awl, but did not want a knife for working around horses. I got them a knifeless rebar, and I gather they have been using it almost every day for at least a year now.
Thank you for talking about the P4 being marketed correctly and it's use by the guy on Naked & Afraid. I watched his video on the P4 and it might just be the best outdoors/camp multi-tool in existence. I steered away from the Free series b'cuz of Ben @ TX Tool Crib, but if you're not using in an industrial setting than the magnets aren't a problem and the 1 handed opening & access along w. the more robust tool set is ideal for outdoor survival. Here;s a link to his video, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0p62QzrTF0k.html I really hope Leatherman pays attention to what he has to say, because with a few modifications they could make a next level, awesome outdoor survival multi-tool.
Funny how American TSA doesn't allow knives in Carry-on luggage, but allows saws in the same. Indian TSA is like " F*ck all, you cannot carry multitools and sharp pens"
@@digitalbizfor25 the bolt face isn’t meant to be dug into and yanked on.
