It's been a while since I have worked a satellite pass with a handheld antenna and handheld radio. The autonomous satellite tracker is not done but almost finished. I still want the ability of doing it by hand in the times when I dont want to set up an entire tracker for a quick pass. The ELK log periodic antenna is probably the best I have used so far, but the other antennas I have used worked for me also. This ELK is probably the easiest to set up when it comes to assembly time.

I had neighbors like yours, complaining about my antennas and radio. I informed them that I was licensed by the FCC, so complain to them. Stay safe and be well, keep up the videos. 73

When I was running outlaw SSB on 11m 15 years ago and was seen building my own quad, a neighbor accused me of wanting to eavesdrop wireless phones (land lines). Now that I'm legit, licensed and legal, I'd tell them to [ ] off and go file a complaint after reading their Part 15 statement on all their cheap home electronics. Gotta love Florida houses. You have sand everywhere!

I had a good laugh about the neighbour thinking you are weirdo, pointing antennas in the air :) I have been getting that for a long time now - since mid 1980's. I get the "what are you doing ?"and "why?". I try to avoid people now when I play radio in the outdoors, avoid the weirdo questions...

Hey Eric, I wanted to say thank you for reigniting my interest in Ham radio. Last fall, I had some issues with my radios (turns out HT's don't work very well when you're standing on top of a massive vein of iron) and was looking to put a radio in my Jeep. I found a video review on your channel and decided to see what else you had posted. Your videos showed me what was out there now, and how much you can do. I never thought about digital modes because it seemed so complicated. I thought SSTV was a thing you had to have a specific radio to use (my dad had a couple of those HT's with cameras built in, should probably go see if I can find them). I didn't even realize that mobile and portable hf was a thing that people actually do. I thought it was something that was only done by people who live mobile or for field day. I passed my general exam today. If I hadn't seen your videos, I don't know if I would have even decided to go for it. Thank you for making these videos and showing people what can be done.

I'm fairly certain I heard your call on the pass (I know I heard "YZI" once). I'm getting really stoked and thinking of getting on the satellites. Deciding on which antenna I should purchase (Arrow or Elk). Used my YAESU FT-70DR with a Diamond SRH77CA antenna to receive today. I also copied some solid downlinks on the Diwata-2B today as well. Thanks for the video Eric. 73, K8KSB /EM89ef/

Thanks for the video. I bought the ELK on your recommendation but haven't had the chance to try it with my HT. I have the 9D and I noticed that the battery parasitic drains if I leave it connected to the HT. Does the 8D have the same issue?

Love the Elk the most of the 3 antennas I have tried. But all 3 did work so it's a matter of size, weight, portability and design preference.
@RadioHamGuy
@RadioHamGuy 4 года назад
They are great fun, try them from your base stations, you might be surprised, I have worked the many times with my FT-400 base into my Diamond x-510 at 50 ft and that antenna has a low radiation angle towards the horizon, but it really preforms when the satellite is lower in the sky, not great for overhead but I make a lot of great contacts very easily with this during the early pass when they are still low and then again as they are leaving, lot of fun with what I already have set up as my normal 2 meter base station! It works every time when I want to get on and make a contact. Keep up the great videos by the way, you have a great channel.
@HamRadioConcepts
@HamRadioConcepts 4 года назад
Thank you so much for the compliments and yes I tried a pass one time while mobile it was a lower pass and I heard it but couldnt make it in.. It can be done with a vertical you are right.
@RadioHamGuy
@RadioHamGuy 4 года назад
@@HamRadioConcepts Thanks for the reply, and also since you mentioned vertical, I do that some of them programmed into my mobile rig and have worked them from there also with a 1/4 wave on the roof, works great for most of the pass, it really surprised me with I could do it that way but it works! I use 50 watts and have had good luck, was going to do a video on it but have not got that done yet, ha.

@HamRadioConcepts
@HamRadioConcepts 4 года назад
Yes, its really quick to not tie up the satellite. I tend to just confirm their grid to keep it as short as possible instead of saying their call back to them, this way they know I heard them...but its a rush and you get screwed up really easily.

You said approach - 436.805 over head - 436.795 move away - 436.895 Are you sure? General knolege about Dopler effect says that, maximum freq should be when object is approaching, center freq when it at the nearest point to you, and lowest freq - when it moving away. So, the correct table should be: approach - 436.895 MHz over head - 436.805 MHz move away - 436.795 MHz Is it true?
@HamRadioConcepts
@HamRadioConcepts 4 года назад
No, I did make a mistake instead of 436.895 that I said, it should be 436.785, however, the radio does 5KHz step size so it would be 436.805, 436.800,436.795,436.790, 436.785
