Perhaps only the most devout understand the charisma of the figure of the Christ of Medinaceli. A figure that goes out in procession on Good Friday each year and that gathers tens of thousands of people in the streets in Madrid. And his figure remains in a temple designed to look as it should, in an emblematic place in the building.
The Basilica of Jesús de Medinaceli is located in the center of Madrid and completes the group of six basilicas that exist in the capital of Spain. The present building was consecrated
solemnly on November 21, 1930 by the then Bishop of Madrid, Leopoldo Eijo Garay.
Its history, like that of many other buildings, originated several centuries ago but various events meant that the original did not reach our time. In the 17th century, the first church was created, which suffered serious damage during the war of independence, in the 19th century. It was partially rebuilt until the confiscation of 1836, remaining abandoned until 1843, when it was returned to the Duke of Medinaceli.
In 1922 the old building was completely demolished due to being in a dilapidated state, and in 1927 construction began on the current one, designed by the architect Jesús Carrasco-Muñoz Encina. It was finished in 1930 and is what we see today.
On the outside, its neo-baroque façade stands out, which has a serliana-shaped central window and is topped by a large triangular pediment.
As can be seen in the entrance hall, it is a fairly modern building. Some automatic doors allow access to the interior of the temple, which is not surprising because it is young.
The basilica has a Latin cross plan with three naves, the one in the center being the widest. On the Epistle side there is no chapel and that nave is totally diaphanous. The same does not happen on the Gospel side, where we can see 3 chapels, one of them of great value.
Various stained glass windows are distributed throughout the temple, also with scenes from the history of devotion to Christ. You can especially appreciate those that are located above the interior cornice, which give light to the room.
Happy Friday!
