I took a tour of the London Stadium, home to West Ham United.

West Ham used to play at Upton Park, but moved into the London Stadium in Stratford after the 2012 Olympics. Queen Victoria Park is a massive complex complete with a Westfield shopping centre and other amineties.
Should West Ham have moved there or stayed at Upton Park?

Unfortunately I never got to see the Boleyn Ground which upsets me greatly as someone from East London. I found London Stadium to be very vast, people are so far away where it feels there’s no cohesion between the supporters. Also I sat quite close to the pitch and it still seemed to be quite far from the action. Although, I think it’s amazing that our club got to settle in such an iconic stadium. Just my opinion

10:56 - its absolutely MILES AWAY from the pitch! Absolutely awful! Stade de France is a reasonable football-athletics compromise but not great. Athletics is a nonsensical govt obsession. No one watches it, no one is interested in it. So why the hell let it destroy football?

It'd be great to see you do a little football tour of Cyprus. It's a pretty small island so travelling is very manageable if you rent a car and they've got a really cool little football culture with some fierce political rivalries (Onomia vs APOEL) as well as some interesting stadiums dotted around in the middle of nowhere. If you get some locals to help you out and show you the culture around food/football/politics I reckon it'd be a great series of videos. Puncheon is also still playing out there for Pafos!

You should never leave your historical and spiritual home unless it’s impossible to develop and is a crumbling shithole, West Ham could have upgraded Upton easily their owners were just hell bent on moving to the soulless bowl which has destroyed the clubs true spirit forever

'Improved the matchday experience'? Maybe for the tourist fans. There are PIMMS drinks stands on the concourses, burgers cost a fortune and there are huge gaps between some of the stands and scaffolding holding up the seating where the retractable seating system failed. I'm all for progress, but Karen Brady has ripped out a lot of what made West Ham with no regard for the generations of traditional fanbase in order to please her new target 'customer base' The stadium is ok, but they failed on so many of the promises they made when they were trying to soften the blow of leaving the Boleyn Ground. And if you look at what's left of the Upton Park site they've not even really acknowledged the history that was there, like Arsenal did so brilliantly when they left the Highbury site. The only way to make the London Bowl a proper football stadium is to knock it down and start again. To bring a few seats in the front tiers a little bit closer to the pitch does nothing for the remaining tens of thousands of seats that can't be moved.
@GhostSubstitute

Honestly season ticket holder from 2008 ish- 2018 ish here. It’s accurate what you say. The badge changed, the stadium was a big shift, from a historical ground to a bowl. The seats being further away makes the games feel spacey and not as intense. If you sit in the upper tier the big retractable lower tier stands are bizarre. I feel it would have been better to just keep the stands further away from the pitch. Not that it would have helped the atmosphere but I feel it would have been better. At the Boleyn ground we had our mates around us and everyone got spaced out in the move. West Ham United became West Ham London. It’s modern. & It’s lost a lot of the character. I think it was the right decision for the clubs future but it’s sad what has been lost. I found myself increasingly disconnected from the club and find myself feeling guilty as I don’t feel the connection I once have. It’s sentimental. I still love West Ham. But it’s different. And that’s all there is to it.

For the younger generation of West Ham supporters, accepting and enjoying the move to the London Stadium was probably easier to accept than those of us who spent some of our best days at Upton Park. It's taken me a while, but loss turned to acceptance, and I've enjoyed some great moments along with a lot of heartache at the LS. A couple of things - We're never going to replace what Upton Park was, and the London Stadium is still an athletics stadium first and foremost. Depending on where you are in the ground, particularly in the upper-tiers behind the goal, you're miles away from the pitch. Upton Park was more than a ground. The streets, the stalls, cafes, pubs, etc., there's none of that around the LS. All the angst with the move was caused by Gold, Sullivan and Brady, but thankfully it appears we're in the last few years of their stewardship. Two final things from me. I am feeling raw after last nights defeat to Spurs. I was at the game, and while I hate to admit it, their ground is probably the best in England. I travel to away games regularly, and it's a magnificent ground unfortunately filled with overentitled delusional Spurs fans. And lastly, Rangers fans are always welcome at West Ham ⚒🇬🇧
@TheFamousMileEnd
@TheFamousMileEnd 2 года назад
@PrimeVids , I think so, too. My old season ticket was in Chav Corner, and the players warming up or taking corners would receive some light-hearted banter, and it was good when they'd start laughing. There are games where the LS has been rocking, even intimidating, e.g., Chelsea at home in the league cup, which was also the first London Derby at the ground.

I recently went to watch my team Grimsby in the National League playoff final. Town fans in general think it's the worse large stadium we have ever been to. It's absolutely crap, and they charged us a fortune to go there! There's a large gap, about 20 - 30 feet, between the front seats and the seats higher up at the back. This gap is covered over with tarpaulin sheets, which looks a complete mess. The poor fans in the upper tier are miles away from the pitch because of this. To compound the mess, they removed all the lower section of seats behind both goals, so the poor fans behind the goal were miles away from the pitch, and made for an awful atmosphere. Hope never to have to go there again, it's awful.

As a neutral, i can't see a single thing about the london stadium that's better than upton park. I guess it's bigger, but they don't fill it anyway, so who cares. I often wonder how difficult it must be to be a west ham fan, knowing that your club is essentially going to be homeless for probably decades or longer. They literally attacked their board at the stadium because of how bad it is, that tells you everything you need to know about this stadium. they seem to have reached a level of acceptance now, but i have to assume that it came at the cost of a part of their soul. Sure, the stadium looks nice, but looks don't count for shit here, it's all about practicality, and this stadium is horribly impractical and not made for football. It will never be a proper football ground no matter what they do to it.

Yes every West Ham fan would’ve probably wanted to stay at Upton Park and just had that extended but that couldn’t happen for council reasons. However with us now in the Olympic stadium it gives an opportunity for many children to come and watch West Ham and grow a passion and love for the team. I had been to Upton Park a few times but was never old enough to appreciate the atmosphere so was not really into football. However when we moved it opened up another 30,000 odd spaces for season ticket holders which has been a revelation for me honestly. I’m now in love with West Ham and in love with football ⚒️⚒️

I think there was were talks of extending their old ground up to 40,000, but when Gold and O'Sullivan took over they had their hearts set on moving to a bigger stadium and wanted to move into the Olympic stadium after the games finished. Though from the sound of it from West Ham fans it has not been a popular decision. A fair distance away from the pitch, dissatisfaction towards the owners and the fact their traditional rituals were taken away when they moved because supporters used to get their pie & mash in the greasy spoon or the pub near to their old ground.

They were going to knock the East Stand down and rebuild it to a double decker. Would have made it 40,000. However Gold and Sullivan made up some bulls*it about it being to close to a bus garage that went not long after West Ham moved and also because it couldn't be built above the flats next to the ground. The flats now on the Boleyn are taller than the flats next to the ground. They moved them for profit. West Ham should knock it down and rebuild it!

@@joeybill9472 it wouldn't surprise me. But they got the Olympic stadium for virtually nothing and a lot of away fans love atmosphere there. Nothing can take away it's history and the memories that ground once hold.

Absolutely Not haha. Unsuitable and inappropriate to play football in that ground. Not fit for purpose.

Have visited Upton Park and London Stadium.....gotta say L S is not a proper football stadium, rather like watching football in Australian Rules stadia....too far way from action and shallow stands. Upton Park was a great football viewing stadium. Close and atmospheric. Facilities like food, bar and loos was third world however.

Agree, that's why the owner's get so much stick. You cant go from a tight football stadium like Upton Park with fans close to the pitch to an Athletics stadium with the fans so far from the pitch. I still down know why the owner's sold Upton Park so quickly. They could have waited a year and see how things were going at the London Stadium and still have Upton Park as a back up plan? I hope the new Czech shareholder when he eventually takes over will see the light, to own the London Stadium, rip it up and start again. If not that, give the stadium owners notice and build a purpose built football stadium like Brentford with a bigger capacity.

Thanks for the “tour” I’m a life long hammer, spent most of the 70s, 80s and 90s at Upton Park but have yet to visit what I had dubbed it, The New Boleyn Ground Stratford. Come on you Irons⚒

There was an athletics track there at one point….no there still is. It is a multipurpose stadium that still holds athletics events! It also hosted a MLB baseball event in 2019, Yankees and Red Sox, and had plans to host more. Please do your research before making a whole video focused on a stadium!
