Hi and thank you for a thorough and honest review. Like you we share a pretty similiar system (Primaluna EVO 400 power amp with Tung-Sol EL34B's, Icon Audio LA4 MKIII Signature pre amp and Klipsch Forte IV's), on the digital end is a Denafrips Pontus II 12th Edition with a Denafrips Hermes 12th DDC. It's been a week since I received my LPS for the DMP-A6 (Master Edition). After installing the LPS and firing it up using it's internal DAC wired via the RCA output the first thing that struck me was how the bass seemed to be more pronounced and well controlled (tight with a better sense of speed) and while I did take note of the improvements you mentioned (slightly wider soundstage and more info retrieval-notice I DIDN'T say DETAIL) which I also noticed it was the bass region that stood out the most. Though impressions are all subjective I was saying to myself DAMN-not NIGHT & DAY but these little changes makes the price of this upgrade worthwhile while using it's internal DAC. I have not heard or tried the Standard Edition but I would believe that the better clock, op amps and upgraded power supply collectively makes this stand out streamer a very respectable piece of gear with not wanting to upgrade to anything else for quite sometime. After a week of burn in (for those who believe) I now have it hooked up using my Denafrips Pontus II 12th and Hermes 12th combo. I perceive the impact of the upgraded LPS to still be evident but more subtle to the point that unless you are really intimate with your system you would be really hard pressed to discern any difference but YES-still there. Worth it? THERE ARE THOSE THAT SPEND THOUSANDS ON CABLES WITH LESS IMPACT! Though not world class (no world class budget) for me a no brainer especially since I could happily live with the Master Edition's internal DAC, clock, and op-amp upgrades and upgraded LPS if I were ever in a pinch and in between DAC's (in the end I prefer R2R DAC's).

The improvement is quite significant in my system (I was about to sell my DMP-A6, but decided to try this power supply upgrade). The background is quieter, and the sound stage seems to be bigger. The vocal was too bright for my taste, but much more smoother after the upgrade. Overall, the music now has more weight in it. I also feel that there is better instrument separation as well. Anyway, I feel this $286 upgrade is totally worth it.

You shed a little more light on the main question I have, the difference between the standard and the master edition. I will definitely be running this into my Oppo 205 DAC one way or another (and from there into a superb Audio Research preamp), so I will be bypassing both the clock and the DAC if I go HDMI or USB... so I really don't see any need for the Master version. One thing to note you didn't mention if you do that power supply upgrade: you can only connect one USB drive to the back to counter the excessive heat the LPS has. Finally, you had to have gotten your hands on the new DMP-A8 by now? That includes all the master extras, a linear power supply and the state-of-the-art AKM 4499EX DAC. Unfortunately for me, it also removed the multi-channel HDMI & substituted a stereo i2s I personally will never use...and from what I can tell there's no way to disable the volume control on unit.
@abxaudiophiles
@abxaudiophiles 7 месяцев назад
Yea, if you’re just using it as a streamer there will be no significant benefit or difference from the A6, A6LPS, A6M, or A8. In that case just save your money. 💰 The heat is VERY minimal. I’ve got no concerns, only slightly warm to the touch. Lastly, I’ve also moved from the EverSolo as I found the Pecan Pi+ from Orchard Audio to be far superior in sound quality. Cheers.

Herb Reichert has said many times that if you understand circuits and electronics you know that when you listen to your system you are listening to the power supply as it’s a big part of the sound. Also, the degree to which you are able to hear the small differences can be determined so much by how well your system is setup for excellent stereo reproduction. Setup setup setup. I’m aware not everyone can pull their speakers out 3,4,5 feet into the room but it makes a big difference if you can. You gain resolution. If your room is somewhat treated and you’re sitting at the right distance it allows you to hear these differences and in some ways they actually do become “big” differences.

100% accurate.... :)
@r423sdex
@r423sdex 9 месяцев назад
Pulling your speakers out could make them sound worse. If you want to see what a power supply can do, check out ASR. A cheap Chinese dac with insanely low noise and distortion, way below what any speaker can resolve. You do know that the speakers are the worst part of the system. Herb Reichert also comes out with lots of rubbish, don't take anything he says as true.

@@r423sdex Yes, moving anything in the room will typically make a difference. Whether that sounds good to the listener depends. Generally speaking tho, pulling a speaker into the room and away from being against the back wall will increase focus and detail, and help soundstage and imaging. Also, we can typically hear what we measure, can’t always measure what we hear. ☺️😊
@r423sdex
@r423sdex 9 месяцев назад
@@abxaudiophiles what can't be measured with regards to sound. My dac could care less about what's connected to it via usb. The clock and noise floor are insanely low (-140 dB), and that's plugged into my noisy wall socket. But there is nothing wrong with imagining it sounds better, that's just human nature.

Thanks for taking the time and the expense of testing the new LPS. Since I use an external DAC through the USB output, I doubt I'll hear much of an improvement as you mentioned. But hey, if $286 fell onto my lap, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Then I would probably use the inbuilt DAC more with certain music genres or movies, since their (DACs) sound characteristics are very different. Better to have a DAC too many, than have a DAC too few, right?

@@abxaudiophiles I think that the LPS or a DDC (my Denafrips Iris 12th) removes jitter before the data gets to the DAC (I've since upgraded from the Denafrips Ares II 12th to Denafrips Pontus II 12th-1 in 11/2023). But the LPS can only help remove jitter, whereas a DDC will improve both jitter and a better clock.
@mrpmj00
@mrpmj00 7 месяцев назад
@@abxaudiophiles Yes, but I think that the $300 for a LPS is better spent towards a $550 Denafrips Iris 12th DDC. Here's my reasoning: Upgrading a SMPS to a LPS would eliminate the inherent noisier SMPS to reduce jitter. But a LPS will only play what it's fed from the internet. Whereas a DDC will buffer/delay a signal to reduce jitter, and uses its better clock, both which improve the signal before sending the data to the DAC.

I think the whole discussion regarding how things sound is very interesting, as most people do not understand how all the factors associated with the digital and analogue stages effect the sound, but more importantly, they also do not understand how the auditory cortex of our brains compute sound, because they do not compute sound the same way, we are all very different in the way we think, and feel, how our chemistry works, as a result some people are more sensitive than others to differences in sound, some at high frequency, some at low, some across the full range, in addition the way we compute the sound also in terms of the context and complexity is also very different. Because of this generally there is a degree of ignorance with regard to how sound is heard, people have a tendancy to think we are all the same, and if they cannot hear a difference, then of course nobody else can hear it either. Sadly this view tends to bring a very black and white way of thinking, which is more often than not contary to the reality. In addition the type of equipment you have to produce the sound and the way in which it is configured and connected have massive influences on what is heard, so when you couple these factors together you have such a huge scale and dynamic that it becomes impossible to compare one persons view to another, it is all very subjective. Some like it warm and others prefer clarity, some prefer bass other prefer treble. Once we understand these dynamics it then comes down to you and your system. Personally I have a very resolving system (DMP-A6 to Chord Hugo TT2/M-Scaler to Michi X3 to Bowers and Wilkins 804 D4s) and I can hear tiny differences in sound, cables make a noticable difference, as do power supplies, and having just upgraded my DMP-A6 with the new power supply, I can affirm that there is a noticable difference, may be 5-10% improvement, which for me is a pleasing out come 😀

I have installed the LPS on the A6. I think that my current system does sound alot cleaner and gives a nicer resolution but that said it could be my mind playing tricks just to justify the money spent. Either way it's an upgrade nevertheless. Win win in my book :)

the difference that is between any power supply is the current it supplied at a fixed voltage. .the current required is very very small/ mAs all nonsense NO DIFFERENCE BETTER PSU for power amps there could be a difference

@@abxaudiophiles They do, I put the LHY Power supply board and got the 25v LPS for my Node X, posted some pics of it on Facebook and it must've triggered some dormant anger. These guys were upset lol.

Hello everybody I'm somewhat worried about the increase in internal temperature (a fact also recognized by the manufacturer), especially since I also have an SSD installed. As far as I know, the clocks are quite sensitive to temperature and I wonder if operating at a higher temperature will not affect their performance and implicitly the quality of the sound. I have the Master Edition and I use the internal DAC, I would be curious how it would sound coupled with a DAC from a price range of over 4000 k euros, I tested with two DACs from the area below 2000 and I prefer the internal DAC. @abxaudiophiles thanks for the review

For me the temperature increase was minimal, just noticeable to the touch, but did not seem anything more than slightly warmer than my 72 degree room. Although you could just feel the case was ever so slightly warm to the touch. The most expensive DAC I have had mine on was the Ladder Schuman, so I am not sure about the 4K space. I as well could live with the internal DAC of the solo. The dual ESS chips are pretty darn good. Cheers and keep us posted on your adventures. :)

One correction most modern units still run digitally through the DAC, It improves pre-filtering and conditions the signal like a DDC and typically boosts sound to that of a more expensive DAC set-up since you are going through 2 DAC chip sets

Go with the Teddy Pardo then. Much more expensive but its power supply is external.
