Today we are having what looks like priviy soup but its really a lentil soup from 1812 and some sauages that Justine made. We'll be dicussing multiple events that happened this week in history, the new outhouse we built out on our land, a coloring book that Ron is working on for Pioneer Days and a really cool German pewter peice from the 1550s that Justine bought!
To see this meal and others being prepared please visit our MAIN channel "Early American".

I usually blend my lentil soup when it's ready from the crock pot. I use a stick blender. But my soup uses red lentils, root vegetables, and cajun spice and creamed coconut or coconut milk, so it's more of an Asian style lentil soup. I love green lentils but they are not the best for soup as Ron and Justine found out. I use green lentils to have with rice or made into a cottage pie. Red lentils have a lovely colour for soup.

That lentil soup sort of reminds me of the pease pudding that I made about a week ago, from a recipe from Martha Lloyd's Household Book; because I made it with dried split peas (because that's what's available in my local store) rather than the fresh peas that the receipt calls for, it has a greenish-brownish color that is very close to that most entertaining of all historical color names, "goose-turd green". Tasted good, though, because it had lots of herbs in it!

I don't know why recipes from the 19th and early 20th centuries here in Britain tended to have very little spices in them because in earlier periods such as the middle ages and Tudor times they used quite a lot of them.

That soup looked good and I’m going to try it but maybe not purée because I like more body in my soup. Never had lentil soup before, but LOVED the beef with barley, so I’m giving this recipe a try.
@feelinguru-vywiththepaingu9808
I don't puree my lentil soup. I haven't yet seen this cooking episode. My lentil soup has carrots, onion, celery, and garlic, sometimes potatoes. If you're going to try lentils for the first time, use a good recipe. Unless it says the lentil color, it's green lentils, also known as "lentils." All the best. 😊

Hi Blue Eyes thankyou for bringing up the painful memory :) haha, all is good now. Civil war bullets are very similar to Revolutionary War and War of 1812 bullets they are made of lead and are round balls, only difference is by the civil war time the balls had a point on them like a modern bullet for areodinamic purposes. i have a video on here called "casting round ball" its one of my videos it shows the process. thankyou :)

I know you love Mishmish and want the best for him so I just wanted to mention that when you pick up a cat, you really want to make sure you have support under both their back legs/rear-end and their front legs/chest. Picking them up by the mid-section like that puts undue stress on their organs. It’s also uncomfortable so it may cause him to get grumpy with you when he starts to get older/arthritic.

You too crack me up. You are such a hoot and remind me so much a lot of times of my husband and I. Your story about the rooster. I have always worked professionally with horses been around huge rats, all kinds of things. But I’m gonna tell you the one thing that made me scream like a little girl was a rooster we had once that this thing would do sneak attacks on you. Come out of nowhere and just start a flogging and he tried to get up in your eyes.finally the last time that happened I said Jackie you go get that 22 now. And you know that old bugger was so tough. We couldn’t even eat them after we stood them. He was mean now and he was old. So Justine, I feel your pain.

Another idea for a US history coloring book might be to depict lesser-known figures like Phillis Wheatley Peters (known for being a 1700s slave and having published poetry) as well as nameless immigrants coming from wherever and doing the jobs that those particular immigrants are known for like Scots brewers, German bakers, and Irish stone masons.

I would cook this basic recipe but with a bit of tweaking. I would chop the vegetables much smaller and not put them through the filter. I make a lentil soup with tomato sauce, lemon juice, and maybe a shot of white wine. Of course in the early frontier 19th century, vinegar would be used instead of lemon and tomatoes were "poisonous". The Greek Orthodox Church has many excellent bean and lentil soup recipes from the mid-19th century. My ancestors were from the German Anti-baptist Adventist sect. They settled in Pennsylvania in the present-day city of Ephrata. The original religious settlement practiced vegetarianism and celibacy. Obviously, the celibacy didn't stick. The Ephrata Cloisters are open for tours in spring and summer. There is more to learn about the community online.
