If this word is associated with conserves for you, you are absolutely right:
these words have the same root and come from the verb "conservare" - to preserve.
So, what did they preserve in conservatories? Certainly not a tomato soup.
In Italy during the Renaissance era, conservatories were called shelters for homeless children, "preserving" them from hunger and cold.
These children in conservatories were given basic musical education so that they could later serve in choir singing.
Later on, the term "conservatory" gradually became common and began to be applied to all music schools.
