🚨 Rib Fracture vs Bone Bruise: How To Tell The Difference? 🚨
✅Differentiating between a broken rib and a bruised rib can be challenging, as both conditions can cause similar symptoms. However, here is a summary of the key differences:
1) Medical Imaging: An X-ray or CT scan is your gold standard for detecting a rib fracture.
2) Tenderness: both broken and bruised ribs can cause pain, tenderness, and difficulty breathing. However, in the case of a broken rib, the pain is usually more severe and sharp on palpation while a bruised rib tends to cause more localized pain that is often described as a dull ache.
3) Mechanism of Injury (and presence of a noise/pop) - Although there can be a noise associated with bone a muscle strain and fracture, we’re also looking at the actual mechanism. Did you fall from standing height or did you fall off a 15 foot ladder?
Of course this is not a complete list and there are other questions to ask to determine if there is a fracture versus a bruise, however, it gives some guidance as to expectations following this sort of injury.
As always, this isn’t medical advice. See a medical professional if you have had an injury to receive the appropriate medical treatment.
