I’ve been doing this for years. My tip - keep a moist wash rag nearby to clean your fingers if you get glue on them. Also, I find the iron works almost immediately so I only keep it on the spot a second or two, plus I glue down a whole side at a time. One caution - minky is polyester and doesn’t like hot irons so be careful to stay on the cotton binding as you iron. Also when binding minky, I apply the glue to the cotton binding rather than the minky as the minky absorbs the glue and makes it tougher.

I’ve tried the school glue before and was always turned off by the lack of control of how much glue came out with the regular tip. So switched to Roxanne Glue Baste It, because of the tip included and loved it. It is a little spendy though, so I’ll definitely try Elmer’s again, once I purchase that tip.

Interesting! But, I was gifted a box of wonder clips, and I love them! They hold well, even just two layers of fabric, and they don't distort the binding like straight pins do on a thick binding. But if glue works for you, great! I may use this idea to applique hexies onto fabric where clips wouldn't help, until I can stitch them.on. Haha, wish I had seen this before I bonded an iron on patch to one of.my favorite shirts. Its a bit too light, and noticeable, but, it's on there, now!!

Very useful tip! I'm wondering if the glue can be used on the satin blanket bindings, perhaps on a lower iron setting? They are so slippery!
@joyfulandmerryquilting
@joyfulandmerryquilting 3 месяца назад
My first inclination would be to say yes - on a lower setting for only a couple of seconds, using the tip that delivers a very thin stream of glue. I haven't tried it, however, so I can't give you a definitive "yes". I would try it on a scrap piece of satin binding first. Please let me know your results if you give it a try. Thanks for watching!

Great tip thank you Mary. After gluing, have you tried sewing down the binding with 2 colours? So on your quilt, green on top and pink in the bobbin?
@joyfulandmerryquilting
@joyfulandmerryquilting 3 месяца назад
I don't have good luck - no matter how hard I try or which machine I use or how I set the tension, one color always seems to peek through on the other side. I'm sure it's possible - I just don't seem to be able to master that technique. I did use the same gray on both sides on this quilt (that I used when I quilted it) rather than the green I talked about and it worked well. Gray is VERY versatile. Thanks for watching!

This is the method I use except I use Roxanne's glue baste it. What I found extremely helpful was the tip that you use with that special cap! The problem it Roxanne's glue bottles with the long spouts don't have that special tip cover and it can seal up inside the tip and not be useful anymore. Elmer's school glue is also more cost effective. If I ever find that tip and cover, I am switching to that and Elmer's. The other thing I like about glueing the binding down, is the finished look is so much better and no pins or clips to deal with. It is so much easier to stitch in the ditch.

Looks great..but, ironing a queen size quilt on an ironing board (most of us do not have a large ironing table as you professionals) would be very difficult.. right? All quilting RU-vidrs show tutorials use small quilts in their demonstrations. Larger quilts harder to handle, making some things more difficult. I love you guys anyway and watch soooo many and appreciate the things I do learn. Thank you. (KH)

This is NOT a small quilt, David, - and yes, I did it entirely on my ironing board. It really is possible. My opinion may be unpopular here but over time it will effect your machine and all that glue over time has to go somewhere. I don’t want to risk paying hundreds to get a perfect mitre corner.
@joyfulandmerryquilting
@joyfulandmerryquilting 2 месяца назад
Thanks for your opinion. I have been using washable glue for years on my quilts as well as pressing solutions. I have never had an issue with it causing hundreds of dollars of repairs due to glue collecting in my machine and ruining it. I take good care of my machine and clean it regularly. The needle doesn’t come in contact with anything mechanical in my machine other than the fabric as the needle passes into the quilt and then again when it comes out again. I don’t sew my seam directly on the VERY thin line of glue. The glue is placed just above the stitching line, and I stitch just below the stitching line. I caution you in the video to make your line very thing (using the tip) to keep it from seeping out. In addition, the glue is dry when I stitch, after pressing it with the iron. With all that being said, I believe this technique is safe for my machine. Of course, it’s totally your choice. Whatever works for you and whatever you are comfortable with, when it comes to binding a quilt.
