Today I’m working on my own quilt! That’s unusual - and fun for me 😄 The quilt is scrappy…entirely created from my stash…and has Little House on the Prairie for a sweet backing!
This quilt is an original design (inspired by my great-aunt Nancy) AND I’m sharing the piecing diagram with you! Look for the PORCH SWING link below.
Ok, about the freemotion quilting…topics include:
- loading the pieced backing and the quilt

I'm quilting an edge-to-edge freehand design I call "Hibiscus". Edge-to-edge means that the same quilting design or motif repeats across the quilt from one edge to the other. There's no stopping for blocks or borders or even thread color changes. Just that one all-over Hibiscus design.
When planning this quilt, I initially envisioned it as a striking two-color quilt, but for my version, I went scrappy, pulling together the warm golds/caramels/touches of pink from my stash.

Thank you for this wonderful pattern, I was sitting pedaling, lovin that i can do it while watching the TV, well YT and actually took a photo of the pattern and within a split second you said about the pattern. :) Murphy's Law. Yes, the design is wonderful! Texture is gorgeous, I don't think a custom quilting design would add the same 'feel'. I find the most difficult thing while doing E2E freehand, is the traveling. I wind up getting it to look really nice, but it takes me longer than it should because I get caught in an area, then panic trying to get out and back in the groove. Thank you for sharing your talent!

That improves with practice. As you get to where you know the motif almost without thinking, then you can think more about overall movement. And you can always pause, and plan where you’re going next😉

Answering your question about Live scheduling, random days/times is fine by me. As I've watched everyone that you've done so far, I now prefer to watch them on youtube so I can fast forward through parts, or watch double speed. QQQ can newbies and/or most people do freehand nonstop as long as you can, I’m pretty sure 5 min would kick my butt LOL. In next live (I watch them all) can you do a few minutes of conscious thought out loud … like swirl pedal pedal pedal swirl pedal pedal quick check sizing staying same and any other random thoughts that come to mind. I watch on tv but can’t comment from there … it was Not a mistake having the darker patches … it actually makes the entire quilt blend beautifully! Regarding the metallic comment … me too … yards and yards of white with a bit of thin pop. Caramel thread perfect!

I just can’t quilt very long, at a time. I usually one section across the quilt and then stop for a few. Quilting makes me nervous. I use an 18” long arm. So, no cnt do even a baby quilt from start to finish. Have to break. lol.

I imagine how long I quilt has come with practice. As you can see, the motions are pretty automatic, so it’s low mental level. When I’m working by myself, I frequently will listen to an audiobook and that makes the time fly. If it’s a physical reason you can’t go longer, listen to your body! Take the breaks and stretches you need to!

I didn’t use to have the basting stitch either. I basted the edges with my usual quilting stitch length. That works too👍🏻

i also use the shop magnets to float my quilts tops, but have a question regarding the way you place yours as I notice you have yours clamped to the front of the belly bar. Is there a difference, or is it better, to have them clamped to the top of the bar, or to the front of the bar?

It's Winline. I can't really compare as I've used Quilters Dream very little. The price compares very favorably.

Does bernina’s SW have the ability to ‘record’ a freehand pattern that can be replayed to ‘create’ an edge to edge so you could walk away-ish if u wanted too?

Not exactly. There is a built-in design program, but it's a multi-step process, and another level of learning for me.
