If you rev it to 2500 rpm before launch it would lower the time it takes. Some reviewers have gotten around 5.6/5.7 seconds. There are however many variables so who knows! lol
Yes. You can break six if you brake torque it as you suggest. I try to just do a regular old pedal mash and measure time from when the car starts moving. And there are a lot of other variables so not very scientific. Thanks for watching and weighing in.
Without brake torque, it's sluggish off the line. Even for the NA model. I get better launches brake torquing it at 2000rpm. You can blame the long first gear to please the EPA mpg green naahtzees.
As long as I can remember, being 56, Mazdas were always well made and great driving cars. I'm seeing very good reviews on every Mazda made in the last few years, especially since thier total separation from Ford. I believe all or most are made in Japan, which , I'd rather have, better attention to detail. I had a 91 MX6 and it was a fantastic car. 5 speed, simple to drive, handled well, and was geared perfectly 👌. There was a 2.2 turbo available but I had the regular 2.2, it was fast enough especially extending the gears to about 6000. Redline was 7500 to 8000. I seldom ever drove it like that, but if I wanted to😊😊😊😊😊 FUN.
Two observations that affect the time. First, you didn't do brake-torque launch. Second, either you let go of the gas in shifting even in automatic mode cause it was shifting at about 5,500 rpm instead of redline at 6,500 rpm. Using the manual mode in auto mode, you can control the rpm. Had you done these, the 0-60 would be less than 6 seconds, somewhere between 5.5 and 6.0 seconds for sure.
Thanks for watching and agree. We do basic 0-60 runs just to provide an idea of how a car accelerates and can be compared to others we test. Also turning off traction control would have helped. Manually shifting would allow higher rpm’s but it will still auto upshift below the redline. But yea, can get this into the 5s. Thanks again.
There is lag on almost all cars when you immediately mash the pedal. Traction control is also on here so that can cause a little of it. Throttle response over speed and in all pedal positions is linear and pretty decent in Mazda’s 2.5. We do the worse case pedal mash test with traction control enabled, no roll out, and no brake torquing. This thing leaps pretty good when you do those. Thanks for watching.
@@BeyondTheTestDrive I am aware. But this particular instance is a little excessive in my opinion. I guess I prefer a car that responds a bit more quickly.
Brake boost if you're going to launch. But if this is a supposed casual launch, then at least traction control needs to be off, sports mode on, 93 octane in the tank. I did hear you say you had sports mode on, but that won't do much alone. Was getting 5s every time when mine was stock.
Sport mode doesn’t make a difference if you are just stomping on the gas. It literally just raises your idle rpm a little higher than normal so you feel like your car is faster but it’s literally the same .
@@know916boundfacts. Without traction control off the ECU has to make sure all your wheels can get equal traction before power can be sent. Without TC power gets sent without information being checked by ECU
Thank you for watching and for the very nice comment! This was the AWD. The turbo only comes with AWD. Be sure to check out all of the Mazda3 content we have on the channel. Keep in touch if you choose to buy or have any further questions.
I have a turbo sedan that car your testing had the slowest launch and reaction I’ve ever seen idk what it might be but something ain’t adding up.. is it on 93 and are you going up hill?
Thanks for watching. In the video it’s run both directions and I state I am not sure if it has 93 or not. It measures 6.0 which is in line with most tests and pretty good. It’s a fun car. You can go below 6 with some break torquing and manual shifting. Car and Driver typically has the quickest times and measured around 5.6. They do a 1 foot roll out which helps initial launch.
It's because of the traction control. If you turn it off, these cars will launch with a lot more urgency because it's not waiting for the ECU to calculate how much traction you may or may not have, lol. Fortunately Mazda gave us an easy OFF button for TCS.
you need to turn off traction control and brake boost, also the auto transmission sucks on 1st to 2nd for whatever reason so its faster to use the paddles, I've managed to get to a 5.5 on stock tires
Thanks for watching. 5.5 is a great time. Yea, we try to do a basic test that represents real world use case and compare to other cars. Car and Driver does similar but with a short roll out which is also realistic. And as you point out strategic use of the paddle shifter also helps. Thanks again and happy motoring.
@@BeyondTheTestDrivethank nobody is realistically launching their Mazda3, it’s just maybe one day if you want to have fun to floor it at a stop light or on an on ramp
@@BeyondTheTestDriveits because of the “kickdown mode” on the gas pedal too. I figured out that if you’re in manual shift mode and dont click the pedal all the way to the “kickdown” button, it’ll actually hold the gear!
Thanks for the question. Probably not the best option reliability wise. I am not totally sure but there could be some tuning options to get a little more out of the stock turbo.
Mazda’s six speed tuning does upshift early for the turbo. Not much power left above 5000. Manual shifting at red line may, not sure, squeeze out a tenth or so and take it below 6 but probably not by much. Thanks for watching.
@@BeyondTheTestDrive dealer will crack the ecu for fuel and vvti modification, told me otp. BC theres no way a 2001 camry 5sfe and these old 2009-13 EJs at 6500+ rpm are still beating 2024 models if so, they havent improved on anything. so the car really puts down about 260-280 odd torque then finally something that makes me want to change my mind have the mods for 400+ already done from factory. I been driving 6+ years just gime dat sht.
Traction control off Sport mode Hold pedal down with brake down Mash gas pedal all the way down After letting off of brake. This is slow ho I drive an AUDI s3
It's not meant to be a sports car or anything, pretty quick for what it is. Faster than every entry level luxury car which this doesn't directly compete.
hes not using manual mode thats how you get its sub 6 second. Dealer is offering 400+ torque packages from dealer for less than 10k anyway and thats still cheaper than honda and toyota this year
