For our last day in England we decided to go visit the National Maritime Museum and take a step on the most important line in maritime history, the Prime Meridian, where West meets East with a longitude of 00°00'00''

6:34 That red ball on the pole on top of the observatory is lifted up and then dropped at 1pm each day so that ships leaving the port of London can set their chronometers. It began in 1833 and is STILL DOING IT TODAY. How cool is that? I live just across the river from Greenwich and cross the prime meridian twice on my journey to work. That's four changes between east and west hemispheres each day. I know it's an arbitrary line but it still makes me smile when I think of it...

Track down a film called ‘Longitude’. It was made by the BBC I believe, and tells the story of the development of a clock they could take to sea and use to calculate Longitude. It’s a story that made sailing great distances possible. You were right outside the museum that houses those clocks. They are super impressive.
@davidmalone9022

And the book, "Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius..." is an excellent account of all of this. Latitude is easy, longitude turned out to be a problem of keeping accurate time, in particular in the demanding environment of the ocean.

I used to live only a few hundred metres from the Prime Meridian and I used to walk the dogs in Greenwich Park (and used to cross the line every day when I went to work). I haven't been in the Maritime Museum since the 1970s or 1980s despite living so close. I guess we were lucky that we lived so close, but it was so 'ordinary' for us. It's only when you see this through the eyes of a tourist/foreigner, that you appreciate how special that it is.

6:55 It's the time difference at noon between where You are and Greenwich that gives You the longitude, not the time You have been traveling. love your vids +1
@carbidegrd1
@carbidegrd1 6 лет назад
No, it is the position of the sun or numerous stars taken at any time and then you calculate the offset from the position where they have been recorded at that time at the meridian. This gives you your degrees, east or west of that line.
@harrybloom9213
@harrybloom9213 6 лет назад
I'm sorry but You are wrong! You cannot tell the longitude with the Sun/Stars. Sun/Stars work only for the lattitude, yes, but they do not work for the longitude. Sailors have tried for centuries to calculate the longitude with the Sun or the Stars, but it's just impossible. It's the british navy that finally found out that the only way to calculate the longitude is to set a clock at noon when departing. And, it is the time difference between noon at where you are and noon on the clock that will tell you how far you have gone to the East or to the West. For example, if You notice a 6 hours time difference at noon between where You are and your clock, it means that You have gone 6/24 (6 hours divided by 24 hours) = 1/4 around the world = 360°/4 = 90° east or west. The only thing you need to calculate the meridian is a clock!
@carbidegrd1
@carbidegrd1 6 лет назад
Note my use of the word TIME... also they could only note the difference by taking a sun or STAR shoot and calculating the difference angularity. You are thinking of an older instrument, the Mariners astrolabe, it was in use far before accurate clocks.

Guys. We recommend a film called the "Search for longitude", we think it's a BBC film? It tells the tail of Harrisons development of the marine chronometer. All mariners should watch this film and see the devotion this man and his son undertook in pursuit of the development of a time piece accurate to establish longitude. BTW those buildings on Canary Wharf behind you. Ant was involved in the construction working with the architects and builders. He's to modest to say so but I am so proud of him [Cid] Sail safe, Ant & Cid SV Impavidus. xx

Going to call it a day , was the phrase I think you wanted , it sure wasn't a night . I am very glad you seem to have enjoyed your visit to England , where most of the planet was mapped from thanks to Mr Captain Cook . The M and r stand for master not mister in his case . I think it was some crazy amount like a third of the world he mapped for the first time . He heralds from Yorkshire up to the north of England . Please remember there is much , much , much more to England than only London. I am certain you will recall standing upon the line as your adventures take you places in the future. You will be moving in the footsteps of great men who were fuelled mainly by grog , and fear of the lash .Where ever you travel may the times be good ,thanks for taking me on a trip of places within my country, appreciate it . All the best. bon voyage.

It might surprise you to learn that the Prime Meridian may change soon to the original 'Rose Line', that which runs through Paris and Roslyn Chapel in Scotland (made famous by the novel and movie 'The Da Vinci Code'). I hope you guys are heading north, if so you can pay a visit to Roslyn. After all, Harry Potter's Hogwarts was in Scotland!

I was at the Royal Observatory several years ago. at the time they had a big exhibit about Watches, and how the accuracy has improved over time (no pun intended). as part of it, they were testing people's watches to see how accurate they were, and giving little certificates to say how accurate your watch was. I had mine done, and was proud to know that mine was the least accurate they had seen all week :)

So great to see you in England, we've watched you sailing all over and love your adventures. The Meridian Line you were standing on goes right through the shuttered building behind you and through the middle of a huge telescope that was used to fix it's position. The telescope is set in stone blocks, its a monster and (for it's time) has a staggering accuracy. Love the videos always fun to see what you've been up to.

The prime meridian is the arbitrary line of longitude which by measuring time away from this 0-degree line you may calculate 'your' longitudinal position based on 'your time of day but not your latitude.

Great blog; just scanning through some of the comments to see whether John Harrison gets a mention. He is responsible for devising a method of plotting longitude while at sea with his development of the sea clock/watch. Check out Longitude, a great book by Dava Sobel American author, about John Harrison's struggle to convince the scientists at The Royal Observatory that his clock was the solution to accurately plotting longitude.

Some more information about the Zero-Meridian? It is an artificial, human made line, which has not always been situated in Greenwich/London. In former times it has been in Roma and Paris as well. Every strong sailors-nation requested it for the glory of his own country. In fact it could be on any vertical line between north- and south pole. It is situated in Greenwich now, because its opposite line - which marks the 180 degree line - on "the backside of the world" is used as datum-line. This 180 degree line is not touching any land or important island. And it lies exactly between the asian and american continent. So it is clever to leave the zero-meridian where it is right now. Nobody has to live in a country where it is tuesday on the eastern and still monday on the western side.

I am not sure if you're right or wrong with the reasoning of the London prime meridian vs international date line, but the IDT is far from being a straight line. I always assumed that the London location won out because of the expanse and control of the British Empire.

Nothing to do with the 180 degree line, and everything to do with London being the prime naval country in the world, and having perfected the naval chronometer.
@jerrys634
@jerrys634 6 лет назад
The International Date Line is far from a straight line. It zigs and zags so that it doesn't touch any land or split any "important" island. The prime meridian was situated in England because, at the time, England was the world's naval super power.

Actually guys, it's currently British Summer Time, which is an hour earlier than GMT. Also called Daylight Saving Time and various other verbal gymnastics. Fortunately, the guy that campaigned for it to be introduced died before it happened, as he deserves to be shot. They stuffed around with the time during both world wars, but all of that was subsequent to the establishment of the prime meridian and the use of proper, British winter time, GMT. Hopefully, if we ever do manage to escape the greedy EU's grasp, we'll be able to revert to GMT again, as the only beneficiaries are farmers, ie, 1% of the UK's economy. The rest of us have been robbed of an hours sleep a day for half of our lives just because they're incapable of sorting their own watches out without damaging the entire country in the process. What's the point of being an IT consultant if you can't have a lie in every day?? Anyway, come back in winter when GMT & the Prime Meridian revert back to meaning something. PS Love these vids, thanks for the extra effort you've taken to do a daily vlog but really, you should chill now for a bit. The strain is too much :-)
