A seized engine or a rotten chassis are two of the worst problems any restorer could face. After 60 years in a lock-up we had good reason to be worried about both.
This is the story of Jack’s 1930’s Lagonda, Celia. Jack is my dad and his dearest wish is to see his Lagonda back on the road. With help from good friend and professional mechanic Paul, we hope to do just that. But serious problems with either the engine or the chassis could spell disaster for us.
In this video we come to Alan Aston Motor Engineers run by Paul’s former business partner Richard, to put Celia up on the ramp and find out if our worst fears are justified.
Our thanks to Richard and everyone at Alan Astons for their help and support on what turned out to be a very exciting day - www.alanaston.co.uk

We were delighted! It turned out was just the rockers that were a bit stiff

This is a thoroughbred car which needs patience in bringing back to life carefully... many of the parts are irreplaceable should they be damaged. Please, take it to someone who understands and is sympathetic to this wonderful car.

Absolutely! To put your mind at rest you don’t see it on the video but all the rockers had been being sprayed regularly with WD 40 for some weeks in the run up to that so it only took a couple of taps with a nylon hammer for them to come free. We had been very worried when we realised the plugs were out but by some miracle the engine itself was free.

Paul fully understands the car & has extensive experience with vehicles of this era 7 contacts to call upon too.

Seconded! Celia could not be in safer hands than with Paul.

Begging your pardon, but wd40 is a hack. Obviously, the rust has gotten into the moving parts, and before anything else is done (moving crank, carbs, etc ) it should be disassembled using rust penetrant and dissolver, heat, and a very careful touch. These gents, nice blokes I'm sure, are forcing the engine to move with rust inside the bearings, bushings, guides and all, which will score them. A good cleaning and a thorough accounting of parts would be a good start.

Notes re the music on this one! But it solved a problem from a radio playing the background! Should have a new one up shortly which is just nice peaceful workshop pottering.

There is absolutely nothing about the condition of this car which would pose an obstacle or deterrent to its return to the road : Lagonda chassis do not rot beyond the point of redemption ! The front end up to and beyond the bulk head/cockpit looks fine , and any corrosion , likely to be in the arching over the rear axle , can be easily addressed once the skimpy remnants of rear coachwork have been carefully removed for pattern making . Far far worse specimens have been brought back from the dead , just ask Lazarus and the VSCC !! The secret is to manhandle sympathetically , brute force will get you nowhere with almost hundred year old machinery :

Thank you, yes we are very hopeful too! It was very reassuring to have a good look underneath and a relief to find the engine was free. So far so good!

Ah yes I had a lot of trouble with the audio on this and a few people have mentioned the music. I am working on the next one currently which is a tour of the car at our workshop and will have just the natural audio.

Will it be gotten to the state where Celia can hit the road as is? I think a full on resto will remove a lot of her history and feel. The oily rag appearance is a winner for me.

I agree. We are aiming for stop steer and not fall apart so we will do as little as we have to to get her running. Also we’ll try not to do anything that isn’t reversible. Once patina is gone it, it’s gone and I think Celia would like to keep hers!

Just viewed engine unfreezing. Would have been a lot easier to pour some of the gallons of WD40 that seems to get sprayed everywhere in through the plug holes!

Sorry about the music. I didn’t notice when I was filming and there was music on the radio in the background which could have given me a copyright problem so I had to do quite a lot with the audio.

was this engine a Meadows? My nephew has an M45 that has a Jaguar 6 in it as the previous owner gave up after cracks in two previous Meadows engines.

I don’t think it’s a Meadows engine but I am not certain. Further reading required on my part to properly understand the history. Lots for me to learn!

Ah yes I had awful trouble with the audio on this. I didn’t notice at the time but there was a radio playing in the background which could have given me a copyright problem so I had to scrub that off and then lay over the other tracks to cover up the remnants. Legal but the end results were a bit tatty! Next one’s much quieter thankfully.

@@Reedys_Digest I didn't even notice the music, I must have been too focused on the car in the background of your video! : ) Thank you for putting in the effort to bring this restoration, or rehabilitation, to RU-vid so that we can all enjoy it.

Noted re the music. Unfortunately there was a radio playing in the background which would have given me a copyright problem. I wonder if I could tempt you to take a glance 005. Note so much as a note if I remember rightly!
