I make a portrait in the studio, then head out-and-about to photograph some landsdcapes. I then unload my film and cross fingers that it isn't fogged...

Thank you for posting this!! Just got this camera and found it a bit overwhelming compared to my other film cameras but this was very helpful. Will test it tomorrow :)

I can't help but think digital cameras have very good light meters, they have to be. Plug the film ISO in, pick the aperture and it will tell you the shutter speed to use (aperture priority, or vv with shutter priority). Plus we have different metering modes to play with (you might want centre weighted or spot) and we can match the film WB. Film usually comes in daylight or tungsten, with a digital we can meter for cloudy and shade for side window light, mono B&W filters too. Probably better than a light meter. Or use the digital as a Polaroid.

I think this is a really good idea if I have another camera with me (which I usually do).

I seem to have failed to utilise your nice movie as a listening material of Received Pronunciation. I can completely imagine what you're saying even though I don't understand English itself -- I used to shoot with this super-heavy camera forty years ago! -- Best wishes from Japan.

Hi John, Sorry for the delayed reply...I missed your comment. I've been using the free Lightmate app. Thanks for watching and commenting :)

Thanks for the video. How do you like the 6x7 aspect ratio? I ask because I use 6x6, 6x7, 6x9, and 6x12. I have never tried 645. The 6x6 was my favorite until I tried 6x7.

Thanks for the thanks 🙂 I’m most fond of shooting in landscape format and like a cinematic look so probably an X-Pan or CinemaScope ratio would be my favourite. 6x7 does work particularly well for head-and-shoulders portraits, I think. The extra width over 35mm really helps...but 645 is probably “as good” in comparison. The beauty of 6x6 has been slightly lost for me because it became the default for Social Media and got overused in my view...but my views change with weather, so... 😂

@@studioswinden I have never used the Hasselblad Xpan to obtain a 24x65 aspect ratio on 35mm film. I have, however, used my RB67 to obtain a 24x68 aspect ratio on 35mm film. I cut the ends off a 120 film spool and used those ends as spacers for my 35mm film canister in a RB67 220 back. After capturing twenty panoramic images, I can rewind the 35mm film in a black bag in the field. However, after completing the roll, I usually remove the 220 back, take it home, and remove the 35mm film from the 220 back in the darkroom. If I need to continue shooting, I replace the back with a spare preloaded back. After I develop the film, I have the option of including or excluding the sprocket holes from the image.

That sounds like a good hack. If I can fix the seals on the RB then I’ll give it a try myself. Thanks 🙂

Strange, that you wouldn’t burn a roll of film using the phone lightmeter and checking the negs first prior to doing a “shoot” and not knowing whether the meter actually worked or not.

Yes, if I were doing anything important then that's probably the way I would've gone, but I was enjoying the 'mild peril' of it all, and the readings I was getting from the lightmeter seemed about right from my experience of shooting in similar conditions. Thanks for commenting btw 🙂👍
