The South is NEVER prepared for an ice storm.

I'm an Ohio native and have experience driving in various weather conditions, including a severe snowstorm that resulted in a snowfall rate of two inches per hour and left us with around four feet of snow. Despite this, I would never risk driving in an ice storm.

That salt truck may be the only one in all of Mississippi.

Ice, the most dangerous of all winter driving conditions, especially at freezing or just below freezing. Rear wheel drive is useless. Even 4wd vehicles aren’t much better. With rear-wheel drive, you are pretty much stranded until it melts.

Ice - the mortal enemy of 4WD and ego. Did you slide walking to your vehicle? Turn around and go back inside.

That Ford will get stuck in dry conditions😅

What's so crazy is, all they had to do was drop their tire pressure to 20 pounds. I've always had a rear wheel drive truck and have always been able to make it to work or anywhere else, just by adjusting the pressure of my tires. I've never used chains, just don't forget to air your tires after the ice storm.

From Minnesota where roads are like this 4 months a year. We have the road crews that get out and sand/salt pretty quickly, just as they plow after snowfall. Oh the feeling that shoots up your spin when you feel the vehicle slide

It's all about the right tires.

You would think mdot would have put sand/salt before this, especially going to the hospital.

Why even leave home, those places are not equipped for weather like that.

I feel sorry for them, getting unusually cold weather and lack of proper equipment/products to treat the roads (salt). It would be safer for them to sit tight for awhile.

Seeing videos like this makes me kind glad I live in Minnesota. 😂😊. We should send you a few salt trucks. Just ask. 😂😅

Problem is, that most people down south don't change their tires. They probably don't even sell all season or winter tires there! Also most people aren't prepared with proper gear in their cars. Never hurts to be prepared!

I got outta there just in time. Took me 5 1/2 hours to get to Memphis.

Anything less than studs on winter tires is useless on ice. Of course this type of weather is rare in Mississippi so no one is prepared.

Perfect time to own at least 1 good tire chain

I think it's fair to say that southern folks either don't know how to put salt down or they're super slow to put salt down.

I'm in Ohio, we really don't get much snow anymore here in Youngstown OH. I have a moving and delivery service nationwide. in the winter months, I keep a snowblower, a shovel, and salt on my trucks. and trailers.

This is why I love that we salt the living heck out of our roads in Chicago. If your car and floors in your house don't look like someone dropped powdered sugar, the something isn't right.

I am a truck driver I was stuck in Alabama 3 days last week the ice on the road was a big skating rink I wasn’t going to drive in it live to truck another day

I lived there for a while. They can't drive in sunny weather, let alone ice or even rain. Glad I moved out of that town.

For people with front wheel drive vehicles, if you can get up going forward, turn around and back up the hill. Remember that reverse gear in an automatic isn't as strong as the forward gears so don't get it much throttle.

Rear wheel drives dont stand a chance

This is where a manual stick shift can outwin any automatic... switch off Traction control, put in a high gear and gentle throttle and you will be moving...slowly but surely..

I’ve lived in Wisconsin for 68 years and our roads are like that for 4 months out of the year ! Gotta love the south !

At the 2:00+ you get to see close-up of Limited-Slip (Ford) and Positive-Traction (GM) diffs in action. Weird but in the 60's thru 90's it was an optional feature.

Let this be a lesson for people that want a truck. Don’t get one unless it’s 4x4. It won’t stop you from sliding on ice but it’s a little more useful having 4 tires turning in a situation like that.

All the cars are on summer, old, bald tires. And the roads are not watered with de-icing agent.

23 Nissan Titan Pro-4x would have made it look like a dry road!!

Keeping some weight in the back of those rear wheel drive vehicles would have helped a little but if you live in places that gets like that in the winter i would opt for the 4x4 model. I know it cost more but on a day like that you'll be glad you did

yea dont ride in ice with hard tires i use to be long haul trucker i always soften them tires never had wrecks now dont stop can be very slick

Step 1- put vehicle in 4 wheel drive. Step 2- drive on the grass. 🙄

I guess people don't remember that you need to air down your tires down to 10-12 psi in trucks like that STX to get out of that

MS drivers are not used to ice on the roads and not understanding that 2 wheel drive = NO GO on a day like this !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Here in CO, its a common thing all winter long........

No chains? No studded tires? I live in the Sierra Nevada mountains, and in the winter time street tires just don’t cut it. To be honest, I never related this type of weather associated with the south.

Remember guys. Only EV's or vehicles with 6+ tires still get somewhat decent traction in these conditions. If you dont have one, stay home.

We actually have all equipment in MS to salt the roads, the state just sucks at planning for conditions apparently. Even though we knew ahead of time. 🤦🏽‍♂️

As a Michigan driver I'm laughing my ass off at all these heavy suvs and trucks that get stuck on nearly flat ground and can't go anywhere......All while My cute little honda civic speeds up hills that have iced over. light, fwd, and it stops way easier on ice than you'd expect. just slow down or stay home.

Its traction control. I drive fine in my old Jeep with zero computer assistance..

sure can't drive on ice in the south. I stayed at home and watched hundred car pile ups up north. tell us again how to do it.

Accellerate slow. You can usually crawl up to speed on ice, though you should be crawling home. Southerners aren't ice people.

And I bet that all the people that are Stuck are Questioning their choice of vehicles when they are seeing the others just driving right by them... and the Faster that you spin the tires, the slower that you will be going and are only getting Minimum Distance and if the Rollback truck wasn't blocking the Grassy Edges of the Road that is where I would be heading to and Icy roads are No Joke and I would find a Good Parking Spot and weight it out and Sleep in the Car if I had to....

The city should be fined for not dropping dirt in that area
