LAUDERDALE COUNTY, ALABAMA: Dangerous driving conditions continue as rain and freezing rain fall throughout the county. Snow and ice from earlier in the week is attributing to the chaotic travel in the region with vehicles having problems staying on the roadway. We encountered a semi jack knifed on HWY-17 north of Florence from the drone this afternoon as crews attempted to determine what to do about the situation. The road was blocked with numerous vehicles making an attempt to get through the area.

virtually all of the blockage here on Alabama highways and interstates is 18 wheelers across the road that thought they could make it. Sadly the newer drives just don't have the good judgement to park somewhere until this is over.

The last place I'd want to be in this weather is on a narrow two lane ice covered road like that. I hope they reach their destinations safely.

I have been driving on ice covered roads in Michigan all week without issues. Decrease speed, leave plenty of room in front of you, and don't panic and floor the brake pedal. Drive slower, and if you skid, take your feet away from the pedals and steer into the skid.

It's time for these southern states to realize they aren't invisible to winter weather anymore and buy a fleet of snow plows.

How abt you paying for something that might be used every several years @ best? Since you suggested it, you must have the money to pay for very expensive equipment to sit around for years on end.

@@jmit3491 funny you call it littering when a lot of people legitimately have to get to places, hence snow plows and salting roads.

Its all caused by the highway department doesn't have what they need in situations like.

Usually when some cities, towns and states have Lower Taxes it is because they provide Less Services. Here in my town in NJ the taxes are high but they pre-salt the roads before the snow begins to even fall and then constantly plow the streets until the snow ends and then they salt all the roads again when the snow/ice fall stops. End result is that all roads are clean down to the blacktop in less than 8 hours of when the storms end. No way around it, good service, snow removal equipment, salt, sand, labor all costs Money. Yet, it sure beats accidents, traffic jams, injuries and deaths.

Yes, but in New Jersey you have to get out and go to work or else those admin and county/city workers don't get paid. In Alabama going to work in a snow storm isn't that important.

I believe Snow = Chains on the tires. Waiting for the roads to clear is totally optional on intelligence.

@@jamessimms415 YIKES...Stuck in your Semi? I won't deliver to the East Coast following the coast line due to not enough parking. All big cities don't have enough parking as it is. California, Midwest and a little farther East is a challenge to avoid the snow and ice. Only had to wait it out for 2 days so far in Colorado

It may not snow or ice up every year but it does happen. Learn how to convert garbage trucks into snow ploughs. A warehouse full of salt is not that expensive either. And get rid of those 2-wheel drive pick-ups.

For something happening not very often.
@Nobrun1
@Nobrun1 8 месяцев назад
@@jmit3491 I know that. But this is about simple physics. Pick-ups are front-heavy (engine and all). They are worse on snow/ice than front-wheel drives and definitely 4-wheelers.

I've never seen a single snow plow in northwest Alabama. State of Alabama "We don't have very much snow at all!" But recent years, we have winter storm with ice and snow every year. 2 years ago, we could not drive for a week because of icy road condition.

@@ascensionlady5318 I don't know if my other reply got blocked because it had a link to a local news station video. It's partially an unusual situation because the local fire department there is volunteer, so people can voluntarily contribute money to what service they may want instead of having the government take it from them. It is the sort of thing that many people in the area would give money if asked but want to refuse if the government was trying to take it, in my experience.
