One of my best friends got a 2001 Hyundai Tiburon when we were both starting University, in 2008. Fast forward to 2017, and his fiance (now wife) wanted to get rid of the car since he had a better ride but refused to sell it or junk it. He called me and gave it to me. My father and I have been slowly replacing the parts that have failed due to old age, but it is my main car (driving 60 miles everyday except weekends) and feels really nice for a 20 years old car. Definitely a great ride!

Buy what you can. The parts are starting to be discontinued fast. The fuel pump housing and senders which rot being in the tank, are now discontinued and hard to find.

My girlfriend had one of these 10 years ago, her first car when she was 18, 5 speed i4. I've owned 2 mustang gts and a cobra, driven miatas, s2000, challengers and several others, this car wasn't the fastest, but it had the best powerband, great gear ratios and cornered like it was on rails. One of the best driving cars. However, I was a mechanic back then, and it was a mechanics nightmare!

Not sure why? This car is super easy to fix. I've been all through it and it's a piece of cake to diagnose. They never really had any major issues or recalls either. The annoying seatbelt retractor was the only recall it had.

i think that in hyundai coupe is easier take the cornered than a miata is because the hyundai coupe is front wheel drive, and all cars whats you mentioned are RWD.

My husband bought one brand new (Imported to the UK 13th July 2000), stored for nearly 2 years until he purchased it. 1.6 Engine, basic model, no alloys, air con or spoiler, but did have electric windows. Absolutely brilliant Car. Given to me in 2014, the workhorse was tired. By March 2016 he wasn’t fit to be MOT’d. Forever a Legend. Approximately 285K miles at end of life.

In 1996, this car was very fast for the price, and reliable. The Eclipse GS-T and Integra R were the next popular model up, but cost almost another $10k. In addition, they sold well because Hyundai was the first to offer a 10yr/100k warranty. I still have 2 of these, a 99 and an 01. Two different body styles but pretty much the same otherwise. I bought the 99 for $300 a few years ago with a bad battery and clutch. Replaced them both in a few hours for under $200 and had the car driving like a champ. Driving it now due to gas prices. Anyways, I've known this car for over 20yrs now, so if you have any questions, let me know.

How did you replace the clutch? I just bought a 2000 tiburon for $350 but it has a bad clutch. Do I need to drop the subframe or can I just unbolt the engine mounts and put a floor jack to slightly lower the engine and slide out the transmission?

@@TopSpin361 There is a cross-member that supports the transmission front and back. Then a trans mount on the side frame. You will need to remove the crossmember first, then lower the trans after removing the side mount. Be sure to remove sideways first, then drop. Also to note, most people forget to remove the clutch lever! You must do that so it releases the throw out bearing inside. The trans won't pull apart without removing that. The job is pretty easy. Just be patient and check for things you missed if it's not budging.

I have one of these (since 2005) in Australia. Harder and harder to get parts past the usual consumables, but I managed to get great mileage out of this thing. Filling the tank to the absolute brim, and then running it dry (don't do that, it damages the fuel pump) I was able to get to 1030 km (640 miles) before it ran out! And they're fun to drive. I'd keep it forever if I could.

Just got one for 3 grand and it’s in near mint condition (bought a battery and wheels for it ). My budget wasn’t high and I wanted a car that looked nice and not a grandma car. It sounds and looks like a sports car but it isn’t which really helps the price. And really REALLY good on gas. I want to keep this car till I die!

My aunt has one and im still looking after it. 85,000 miles on it and she bought it back in 2005. I think its worth restoring for her and it runs great still.

I have one of these, same generation, and it is an amazing car. I’ve added almost every mod to this car that you can think of. Except a turbo. It handles so well! It’s not fast but it’s an amazing and fun car! I can race it and still get 26 mpg😂 100% recommend this car.

I always liked its looks. I saw a yellow one in 99 at a Lot forever. The dash AC controls were cheap feeling. Toy like on dash. Chunky cheap shift knob. I still think it looks fresh, I like it better than next gen looks wise. Better than any other Hyundai I have seen.

I just picked up a 2000 with no body damage, surface rust on the back end tire wells. Interior needs the 2 front seats redone. Hasn't ran in 10 Yeats but I should be ready to fire it up when battery gets back in. Planning an rebuilding motor down the road and putting dual turbos on it. Will post videos later on. Mine is a 2.0 5 speed

I never seen a Hyundai scoupe, which was the predecessor to the tiburon, seen genesis coupes and veloster. But it’s been a while I seen this integra stayed triburon. Hated it when it was new, but love the looks now very 90s. Hard to find them in good condition

Great overview man. How tall are you? I have the opportunity to get a 2000 for $3000, low mileage but I'm 6 feet tall, 270 pounds.

There was another review of this car by someone with your height who loved this car & hung on to it. Can't remember where I saw it. I saw another guy who was your height climb out of his Mazda Miata that had aftermarket mods.. Some idiot driver had hit the driver side door but that didn't stop him from keeping the car.

OMG. I have this vehicle in much better shape with manual trans. Love it but it won’t start these days. Looking to restore at a price beyond its actual worth. I have shed tears. My “R00 BEE” (actual plate) will rust in the woods or be restored to original or better specs before I leave this world. Anyone want to inherit it on my passing )I’m a healthy 67 year old) is invited to apply.

I got the same car but mine is green and is manual I paid 50 dollars for it form a guy I told him I’ll give you 50 bucks for it he said ok but it didn’t run when I got it I towed it home changed the fuel pump and it ran like new I’m getting back out tomorrow and seeing if I can fix her again it has a very slight knock

Those motors are strong as hell though, the motor can last long and make power on stock internals if you turbo it.

Well over 300whp on turbo and stock motor. I myself made only 275whp and drove it around for years.

@@cardiiiiii depends the hp these motors are good for 300+whp on pump gas and over 400whp on e85 stock long block and can last a while at that. Not the stock 5 speed is the weak point past 350 wtq it life shortens .

Nice review. I agree with your philosophy; good car, everything can be repaired for cheap. The interior design was completed in 1995, slightly changed in 2000. There is absolutely nothing in common with Pontiac or Pontiac Grand Prix. The design itself is inspired by the 1990 Toyota Celica, Hyundai 1992 HCD I, 1993 HCD II Epoch, and 1995 HCD III concepts designed by San Francisco Academy of Arts, named after the city Tiburon, California, across from the college. The original design was designed by Korean designer Park Jong-su. There was never a V6 offered in the 1996-2001 body.

The dashboard in the 2000-2001 has that Audi feel to it. That's why I have a 1999 dash that soon to be carbon fiber adhesive covered with a gray EL reverse glow guage & a dashboard trim kit. It's plastic is cheap but I like the originality of the 90s shark dashboard.

These are like any other foreign car when used up north. They rot fast. Not that it's a bad car, but by now they've fallen apart in the northern areas. Both of mine in Texas are pristine!

it's a bit of an ugly car, but I guess that keeps them cheap cuz it looks like you described a Celica to someone over the phone to someone who had never seen one and had them draw what you described.
