When I prepare a horse to be started under saddle, I want to be sure that I can communicate with him. Otherwise, I can’t explain all the new things to the horse. My goal is to establish a question-answer communication which is going both ways. This will allow me to truly involve the horse in the process.
We have to establish a commonly understood language with our horse. To achieve this, at first I like to use a game called Touch - It.
You can ask a horse to approach an object and investigate it - touch it. This game is based on the horse's natural curiosity. Most horses will learn it very easily. The objective is not to teach the trick of touching objects with the nose. The main objective is to establish a mutual conversation, a question/answer game.

Thank you for your videos. I tried this game for the first time today with a three year old quarter, and it was quite a succes. When it comes to the umbrella: we managed to get from "dragon/omg this is sooo spooky" to "ok I'll nibble the umbrella and roll it around on the floor" in 10 minutes. 5 star rating 🙂

You mentioned that this isn't about teaching the horse to touch the objects. Would you use food rewards for this game if the horse is very food motivated? I have a pretty insecure horse on my hands, but he loves treats.

I rarely ever use food reward with this exercise because it is about the ocmmunication and the connection with the horse. 9 out of 10 horses will learn easily without food reward becuase I am accessing natural seeking and exploring behavior what I then reward with scratches, praise and rest. having said this, there is no NEVER in horse training. I have used treats occasionally with shut down horses who didn't dare to communicate with me or only made the experience to get shut down when they voiced an opinion.

@@gabineurohr yes this horse has a history of being shut down. I saw in your later video that you planted treats on the obstacles, which I thought was a fun idea. My horse that I'm working with does not like to be curious, he would rather just run away, which doesn't allow him to get any better. I will try this without the treats, but if he isn't being curious enough I will see about implementing the treats to try and boost his curiosity.

What saddle are you using? Where can I get one? I've been looking for one like this.

Hi! This is the bareback pad from Parelli that I got more than 12 years ago. Very nice fit except for horses with high withers
