This is one of the best lectures, should be required for high school history.

I came across 12 rules for life in a book shop quite by accident, this was approximately four/five weeks ago, I’m reading through it at my normal steady pace.. I hadn’t heard of Jordan Peterson prior to this; since then I’ve found the content on here and my middle aged brain is like the teenage brain it once was!! Like a sponge taking in as much as possible.. thank you Professor Peterson. Most inspirational content I’ve ever seen or heard in a very long time.

Thats what I told this atheist, You want me to give up my faith? what would you replace it with I asked him. And he said nothing. I told him, I will keep my faith, and you could keep your nothing.

Porn, replace it with porn... ...or science.

Science is not a religion, it does not fit the same in humanity.

OTOH, consider these quotes: Max Planck, Where Is Science Going? (1932): "Anybody who has been seriously engaged in scientific work of any kind realizes that over the entrance to the gates of the temple of science are written the words: Ye must have faith. It is a quality which the scientist cannot dispense with." 1 Thessalonians 5:21 (KNJV): "Test all things; hold fast what is good."

when you lost your belief in Santa Claus what did you replace it with? To lose your religion is to break yourself free from the shackles of dogmas and superstitions. It's to be free to live reality on reality's terms, guided by scientific knowledge and reason in general.

Taking time and carefully considering a profound concept is not the mark of someone who is less intelligent than others. Maybe less educated or not as well read, but not less intelligent or thoughtful.

i feel like you acquire knowledge exponentially, as in once you understand, say, 2 ideas in this lecture, those two ideas encompass or relate to other ideas and you begin to feel a landscape of thought emerge. at first maybe you find 1 or 2 stones to place your feet over the rushing waters of your ignorance and negative emotion, but its harder to find those 2 stones than the next 2 stones after that, and it goes like that until the waters aren't even a problem for you anymore, like you're standing on a bridge from which to view the waters and begin to gain an understanding of them, to overcome the negative memories of them thrashing you around and overwhelming you when you were trapped in them and eventually accept them in all their pure beauty from an understanding of their neccessity in life and their irreducible perfection, their ineffable essence.

25:30 I do think his messages hit a snag here when he talks about 'sins of omission possibly being worse than commission' because he also derides people for standing in opposition to forces without having their own world in order first. I think it is a valid argument to his stances, as I feel most all people can relate to the feeling that their lives are never *really* in order, thus making it a perpetual roadblock to action or Civic duty. Otherwise I see extroverts and narcissist tendencies being those (and still think this IS in fact the case) that proliferate in the most action-oriented high status jobs and positions. Those character traits that best insulate a person to allow ideas of themselves to manifest as flaws and keep them questioning their ability for success. I also find the subcontext morally bankrupt in that it implies you cannot have valid ideas about putting the world in order without first embodying order yourself, which is antithetical to science which gives all ideas equal weight under it's own rules of scrutiny.....does not rely on heirarcical rites of passage (or shouldn't/attempts not to).

Oh man, I love that passage from 19:07 about the sorrowful nature of life. I find it very comforting. 20:45 also sums up nicely the danger of ideology and fixed belief systems.

I guess Tolstoy's belief system crumbled when 'heaven' was replaced with death. I think the kicker is when he realized god existed within him in relation to his peasants, thus trapping him in the messianic archetype role.

wow he jump on Leo Tolstoy words a lot. It look like it is a one uninterrupted passage but actually he jump from one page to another in order he chose and even cut some words from sentence. I feel like he should disclose it on his lecture.
