02-02-2021 Sandwich, MA - Nor’easter , huge waves collapse home into Ocean, beach erosion, drone 

I am a local. Many of the houses were built in the 1930's and 40's. They had very small footprints and were camps at best, very "rustic". Also these buildings were 200 feet from the water's edge. In the past 15 to 20 years the little houses were torn down and rebuilt into big houses and the ocean moved closer and closer. Many places are still owned by the same families that built 80 years ago. Sadly their time has come to go. The ocean always wins.

If you need definitive proof that money can't buy brains, here it is.

When I was a kid, 65 years ago, old time New Englanders did not build on the beach. The few who did were behind massive sea walls. But I can remember seeing even those walls being tossed across the beaches like marbles after the winter storms. Ten foot high, eight foot wide, reinforced concrete. In chunks.

Why is building on this sand jetty even allowed by law? I do not feel sorry for the owners of these homes.

There's a 99.9 % probability that homes being lost to water will continue until there aren't any homes left for erosion to take.

Who in the heck thought this was a good idea to build their house literally in the middle of an ocean? Mother nature will always show you who's boss!

no concrete breakwater = collapsed house...building permits should never have been issued on a sandbar!

Maybe it's time to stop homes being built on the shoreline. They should not be allowed to rebuild. Bring the dunes back so they can do the job they are designed for.

It kind of shocks me that anyone would even build there. It’s guaranteed to fail eventually. People do the most stupid things!

Sorry but these narrow strips of land were not meant for buildings. They are a natural breakwater to protect the mainland

Because the narrow strip of land has been above mean high tide for 100 years, it is not safe from increasing sea levels, due to polar ice melts and storm surges from higher winds than have historically been recorded. Insurers are taking a long, hard look at ocean frontage losses and will have to make the necessary adjustments in premiums and in coverage possibility.

Looks like they were built on not much land in the first place. Really? You didn’t see this coming?!

I guess now the town should be called Shit Sandwich Mass.

Still beyond me why people are still building houses on sand that close to the beach in this day and age. It’s only ever time.

As a year round resident in Sandwich...now we have our ocean view again!! No need to build on a beach. Hope the town doesn't raise taxes to offset cost of cleaning up the pollution and mess. Just sayin ..

When you build your house with water on each side eventually Mother Nature will show up & show you who's boss. I wonder if they will make the tax payers foot the bill to replace the sand like they do in Florida.

Anybody else notice the lights on next door to the collapsed house? I'd be long gone. It won't be long before the ocean overtakes that spit of land and moves into the bay on the other side.

Back in the 60s, my family stayed in vacation houses in Sagamore Beach. This houses were built very close to the beach. As a kid this was a dream-come-true and the scene of some of my fondest memories. Later in the mid-70s, I went by there and saw that the two closest to the water (there were four total) were gone and the other two converted to year-round homes. I wonder what became of them.

There's no way I would build or buy that close to the ocean! Just a matter of time to get the other ones!

and lumber prices are so high now. Erosion is killing any beach life left. And not just on the oceans either. Same on the great lakes. Homeowners getting put out one season at a time. Thinking they're trying to crowd everyone into the cities.

That’s just heartbreaking. My mom always told me that she wanted a beach home when I was little. I never did because of this high probability that it WILL come crashing down into the ocean sooner or later (or just get blown or washed away in a hurricane). Beach replenishment is incredibly expensive and there are those who protest sea walls being built in front of their beach homes because beach home owners say that it impede their ocean view. I live in S. NJ - 25 mins from LBI. I’ve seen houses fail in storms. I’ve seen them get wiped completely off their foundations/pilling after Hurricane Sandy. I’ve seen the ocean widdle a 200 foot high sand dune down into 200 foot cliff in Brigantine like it was nothing in the course of one stormy night. I’ve seen Hurricane Gloria take my grandpop’s Cape May house that was a half mile from the beach and completely submerge it underwater to the roofline. No beach home for me. No way. I’d rather live in tornado alley before owning a beach home, because at least tornadoes are random and sporadic compared to a consistent and unwavering sea.

This is why I prefer to live in areas with high elevation, and fortified as well. You'll find most of that in those ancient European cities, not so much in the United States.

You build on an ocean front dune- in these says of shrinking, retreating dune lines, eventually the ocean makes specific real estate ventures!

We had a house in East Sandwich on Capt Hook on the ocean ....sold it after 35 years in 2014 and moved to Cambria California then to AZ in 2019...love Cape Cod and Big Sur but now inland near Flagstaff at 6600 ft....the Coconino Forest is beautiful too🌵☃️🦁☕

Built your vacation home on a narrow sand bar which constantly moves, just like the Outer Banks is a wonderful idea. Yes. Put them on stilts and see how long that buys you.
