02 - 09 Toyota Camry, 2.4 engine, timing cover, and chain replacement, with many tips.
LINK TO THE TIMING KIT I USED, ON AMAZON:
amzn.to/3lerAIE
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Very similar to many toyota's & scion's with the 2AZ-FE engine, all the way to 2015 on other models.
Includes the Camry, Solara, Rav4, Highlander, Scion Tc - Xb, Pontiac Vibe, Corolla Xrs and Matrix s. For the years this engine was used.
We will remove the Motor Mounts, Brackets, Alternator, Tensioner, Power Steering Pump and the Timing Cover.
We will set the new Timing Chain and components in place.
Lots of important details.
This job is a relatively long one and with medium difficulty.

Thanks. I just did this on a 1az-fe in a rav4, which is basically identical. I noticed you didn't mention about the oil pressure hole on the timing case cover and face. This is a vital passage for oil pressure in the timing chain tensioner. When you put sealant on, it is vital to not cover this area with sealant. The tensioner works with a spring at start and when car is turned off. But within a couple seconds of start the oil pressure is needed to create enough pressure to the tensioner to resist chain guard pressure pushing back on it. So if this hole is blocked the car chain can become loose. Also upon fitting it is wise to Prime the new tensioner with some oil. Then when fitted, only turn the crank clockwise direction, as counterclockwise can actually cause chain slip, especially without the tensioner yet released. Also correct oil grade must be used. These motors are 5w/30 or 10/40 at greatest. So putting a 15w/40 or 20w/50 or oil stabiliser into the engine may be too heavy for proper oil pressure or flow into the tensioner and also cause chain rattle or slip. Usually the chain and guides and tensioner will last half million km or miles So long as services are carried out every 10000km with right oil and filter. Build up of sludge or carbon particles can also possibly cause failure of tensioner function. I also think it is important that people get the crankshaft and oil pump timing right also in relation to camshaft/crankshaft timing. So I set that first too before removing the chain. Thanks for your video. Was very helpful.

Actually, it is advisable to go counterclockwise for 1 or 2 inches to take up the slack between the cams. If you not a professional mechanic, it is best to remove the rocker cover when changing the chain tensioner, to see what is actually happening.

I use 5w-40 full synthetic in my 2azfe and change it when it gets dark... typically 1500-2000 miles. Original timing parts at about 80k miles. So far so good :)

@NameIs JOHNSON few teeth is certainly enough to bend valve stems. One or two teeth usually can just be saved. Be sure that the timing is out before settling on it being valves. Could be fuel? Run some 98 octane.

@NameIs JOHNSON I'd first think about a small court case though. Sue-proof mobile mechanic? Give him a chance to minimize the damage through labor only while you 'supervise' the work. Another take, It could be your karma. Think about it.

Here's a tip. The wiring harness you're fighting with is basically 3 plugs and a bolt on the alternator. Disconnect all that and move the whole harness back and out of the way. Takes 2 minutes and save a ton of time. For the Power Steering pump, the top bolt has a captured washer, that can come out when removing the bolts, you need to put it back in or the pump will not slide in. Use a long extention and a hammer to tap on it back

Thanks for this. Having replaced a head gasket in a vehicle with a timing chain with the engine in the car, I can appreciate what you have done here. This job is not for the physically weak, or faint hearted, but the reward when you get it right is nice. One area i would add is that it is critical that you don't get any silicon debris inside your engine as it can block small oil passages and filters. I used a shop vacuum cleaner held close to ensure all bits were removed as i scraped. Mineral turps used with a fine plastic scourer pad is handy to clean off any old residue. Prior to re-installing and applying new silicon, clean all mating surfaces with a non - oil based solvent such as brake disc cleaner and air dry. Don't overdo the new silicon either - 3mm bead is fine. Try and keep it continuous.

Thanks for the video. I need to change the chain on my wife's car. It makes loud rattling noise on a cold start. Might as well replace all timing chain related components since the car has close to 230.000 miles on the odometer. I may try changing the tensioner first. For some reason, I thought that the tensioner was activated by the oil pressure but it looks like a simple ratchet type adjustment system. BTW, I think it's best to replace all timing chain sprockets to avoid the chain wearing out prematurely.

Really neat, great information. I only wonder why grease on the crankshaft seal everywhere. I replaced mine on my ' 99 camry, a little grease on the spring tension in the back of seal, and where the crank makes contact. I pressed mine in the hole WITHOUT grease. I think it should fit into the hole firmly, so it can't spin out.

This is a really good tutorial. Thanks for sharing. Question: I need to change my valve stem seals. Do you think it's possible to get both cams out without removing the timing cover if I start with removing the chain tensioner, then exhaust cam sprocket to create enough slack in the chain to also get the intake cam out? Obviously I would need to tie the chain up to prevent it from jumping a tooth on the crank sprocket. But would it work?

I can't manually line up either the exhaust or the intake with timimg mark. They go offset by one or 2 tooth. A little resistance when sitting on the timing mark which push them off when the engine is at TDC. Before removing the chain, the painted mark on the chain where off the timing mark by 4 tooth although the timing mark on the sprocket where off by one teeth with the arrow sign

Thanks for this video. Like everyone with a Toyota, I appear to be having a leak from this gasket. I don't have any timing chain noise though. About how long would you say it takes to take this cover off, and put it back on again? The car is my primary source of transportation, and I start to feel a little uncomfortable if I know a repair is going to take more than 5 hours. Thanks.

Hey man, second time doing this job. As I didn’t release the chain tensioner enough the first time, so when I started the car with 5 seconds she jumped way of time. Ok second time around pitting everything back together. It looks like the tensioner released, but I’m not sure if the chain is tight enough. My question, in fear of doing something wrong again and wasting another 10 hrs and I can’t seem to turn the car crank to release the tensioner. How tight should the chain be?
@waynethegiant
@waynethegiant 2 года назад
After installing the tensioner, put a wrench on the crankshaft bolt and turn it maybe 1/4 rotation counterclockwise, just enough to tension and remove slack from the timing chain. Then, turn back clockwise and you should hear a click from the tensioner releasing. Turn the crank a couple rotations clockwise to check your work. The tensioner should take out all the slack in the chain.

Super Video! I cannot seem to get the engine mount you are referring to out (@ 4 minutes). There is resistance when I try to lift the motor, even when the top bolt of the mount is off. I am using the jack with wood under the oil pan, but is that safe? I don't want to ruin the oil pan. So my main question is, does the drive shaft need to be removed so that the engine mount can be removed? The drive shaft seems to be resisting when I try to jack the passenger side of the motor up. You have a few options.. the 1st option is to bump the bolt with the starter..(youtube, it). 2nd, they do have a special tool that holds the pulley while u turn the bolt.. but if possible ur best bet is to get the 50$ electric impact from harbor freight. My crankshaft bolt wouldn't move either. With a helper, I used a pipe wrench with an extra pipe for some leverage on top at the cam. This i held onto the wrench flats on the camshaft. You have to be careful not to let the wrench dig into any aluminum parts on the head though. Then below I used a breaker bar with a pipe on the crank bolt and eventually it broke free and came out.

Did you or have you encountered alot of problems with stripped threads. A friend of my girlfriend had a complete rebuild done on this engine. Her husband removed it took it to the builder and reinstalled. on the way home it tipped over. For whatever reason couldn't get it to start after installing, for whatever reason thought it was the timing. After paying all that money to have it built fooled with timing. Runs but is showing a P0016. Took off cover it appears to be off 10 degrees. Chain does not have colored links which doesn't help. The arrows on the bearing caps are not very helpful. Is there a particular brand of chain with colored links and do all new tensioners have O rings? If I take it apart I want it to have colored links and a new tensioner,not sure but for $3400 it should have had a newer tensioner put in it.

Hi there Dr Car, I was wondering if you have time maybe to help with an issue I am having. I am running in to an issue with a 2005 Toyota Camry V8 check engine light (only 52,000 miles on my dashboard so the car is not driven a bunch over the years). The last 2 years like clockwork a year apart i get the check engine. The first time I brought it to a show I was told to go to. They said after checking with their computer I have a faulty knock sensor. So I said okay lets do what needs to be done. They charged me $700 at the time in 2020. They said when taking apart the parts they found coolant in different parts of the engine bay (i do not know car stuff I am pretty sure that is what he said). They replace the sensor and a few days later the check engine light returns. Same codes on their test so they replace the sensors again (for free). A year goes by and then just before inspection time Check engine again. Go to the shop... same code. Now they do the replacement again and charge me $300 just for parts they say (do not know if that is a reasonable price). It is now a year since then and once again I have a check engine light. Also I should say my coolant is about an inch lower than it was a year ago. Just trying to ask anyone and everyone for information. It is such a hard thing to find a mechanic in NY and since I am not knowledgeable (but trying to learn) it makes this soo much harder.

Hi, i'm not sure if i can help, but i can give u some idea's, first i assume u havr the v6, because the v8 was never mads on these.. It sounds to me like ur issue is either they used low quality parts, and i would use original.. or maybe it has a bad plug or wire..

@@drcar9202 wow thanks soo much for the reply. Ah so it is at least a possibility low quality knock sensors can fail fast. I know he said to keep the price down he would get something low cost. How much do Toyota original knock sensors go for? Have you ever heard of coolant leaking on to a knock sensor amd causing it to fail? Thanks again for any ideas. I do not know any car people and it is sooo hard to learn from rock bottom.

Does the power steering pump have to be removed??? I have raised and lowered the engine and I can't for the life of me get the top bolt out to remove it. I am working on a scion tc and there is no room to pull it out. If this can be done without pulling it it will make my life a whole lot easier

@drcar9202
@drcar9202 5 лет назад
It all depends on how lucky you are and how it messed up, you will only realy know when your in there. your issue may be that one or more of the headbolts ruined their thread, it does happen with these engines. I would start with the valve cover, you can learn a lot in there. It is an interference engine so keep that in mind. please let us know, thanks.

Usually its a lifetime component, but if the oil change was a bit too neglected.. or if the tensioner or a component failed than it would need to be done..

Had an issue with VSC, Engine and anti skid lights coming on, giving me the code P0016? I have tested and replaced cam sensor, crank sensor, vvt solenoid, changed oil to 5w20, reset by OBD and battery disconnect only to have it all come back on atleast 10 times. At idle it hold 20 lbs vacuum drops when you hit the gas and quickly recovers(perfect), 180 psi on each cylinder (perfect) etc and codes keeps coming back. In my mind the vac and cyl pressure says valves are correctly timed. I have checked the timing TDC on the crank, and both int and ex pretty much line up.. Which is my question, do these marks line up pretty straight or damn straight? I felt they lined up and if i had moved them a tooth then they would be obviously off marks so I left it..just stomped on this damn P0016 coming back..Also it isnt the tensioner, as I had taken it out when I was checking the timing..Any ideas would be helpful for this code...great video by the way..

A few things i can think of, first u may have a clogged vvti oil strainer, this is located behind the power steering pump, u will need to remove the pump to get to the strainer it is hiding at the end of a bolt over there. Regarding the arrows.. the way i looked at them, it wasn't so much where the arrow point was sitting but more where it was pointing to.. so if u look closely at the DIRECTION of the arrow it should be facing the mark.. also if these are not ur issue, u may wan't to consider maybe ur dealing with two seperate issues.. as usually the engine runs pretty good when its only a vvti issue.. probably not what u wanted to hear..

@@drcar9202 VVT solenoid works fine and the type used on the car has nor had a strainer of any type..I actually got it at a shop that can diagnose it with their solus so I am hoping they can help as I have done every possibly process of elimination i can think of..As far as timing, I am positive it is on time, the marks were like 1/8th in off but if moved one tooth either way it would have been off much more..I'm leaning to just something like a relearn etc..
