I've always understood this concept as "upper and lower neighbor tones." Lower is always a half step below, upper is always the next highest scale tone. You can apply this to every scale tone as well as arpeggios.

Thanks for your comment Bflatest. I am aware of the audio problems and I'm trying to get better versions from the video production team. Unfortunately this is taking longer than expected. In the meantime I'd like to apologise for the sh**ty audio. I hope it doesn't detract too much from Sid's wonderful lessons.

Ditto this. It's in most (or all) of their vids. I'm really glad to have Sid, so I buck up and listen over the music, but it is, indeed, supremely annoying.

At 6:53 " Now we've used a half step BELOW each of the chord tones" But the A flat minor scale is a half step ABOVE the chord tone G in the G7 altered chord.

Yes but the 7th of the A flat minor (f#) is a half step below the G7th root note G.

Biography By age 18, jazz guitarist Sid Jacobs became the youngest instructor on the faculty of the University of Las Vegas. After moving to Los Angeles, he developed the curriculum for the Advanced Bebop and Jazz Guitar course at the Dick Grove School and the Jazz Guitar class at the Musicians Institute (MI and GIT), where he continues to teach. Sid has performed with a multitude of entertainers such as Steve Lawrence and Eyde Gorme, Diahanne Carroll, Ike and Tina Turner, Luciano Pavarotti, and Frank Sinatra Jr. As an author, Sid has written several instructional guitar books including Jazz Guitar Improvisation and Modern Jazz Concepts for Guitar
