All the pilot guides give strong warnings about the Pentland Firth and fair enough, with tidal stream of up to 9 knots and serious overfalls around every island. The recommendation is to make the crossing at neap tides with wind less than F5, and as the Visit My Harbour page says, if you do that you'll wonder what all the fuss was about. My plan to get here for the 14th May worked, it was neaps with a F3-4 southerly breeze and flat sea...perfect. In this video I cross the firth from Wick to Longhope, and then continue to exploring different anchorages around Scapa Flow. It feels good to be anchoring rather than paying to be in harbour every night.

This is great! loving the easy going, un-pretentious vibe of your channel and picking up some fittout clues as I'm restoring a 40 year old Oliver Lee designed Hunter 19 in Western Australia.

I do agree "un-pretentious" just a quiet bloke telling a story and letting you learn if you want too.

Nicely done. What an adventure you have had and, of course, very well planned.

Love the vlogg, given me a little more confidence about heading over toward the Orkneys in a small boat. I used to watch the tides from shore rip through there. I was debating cut that out and down the Caledonian. ⛵️💨

Nice vlog indeed! In 2013 I circumnavigation of Scotland, Inverness-Corpach and then “all” famous places in the north west coast of Scotland. Due to lack of time we could not visit Orkney on the way back to Scandinavia. Passing Pentland was a breeze but in very thick fog :-( We took the inner sound but could not even see Stroma due to fog. Now your video had turn on my longing for Orkney again :-) Thanks for sharing!

@@sailingcorribeemwera He-he! Yes, please! Tried that in 2004, singlehanded - bought paper charts and "all" sailing directions but engine failure half way put me back to Skagerack. Not braver with age, but my now better boat/engine gives no excuses :-) Oh dear! You have lots of videos I see now :-) Have to catch up! Thanks again.

Really enjoying this. Curios to know how much petrol you carry for your outboard, what size is it and how much fuel it uses? (I have a 23 ft hunter horizon which I reckon uses up to 2 litres an hour for a 6 hp outboard.
@sailingcorribeemwera
@sailingcorribeemwera 7 месяцев назад
Hi, it's 6hp 4 stroke, on this trip I used just under 1l/hour, some of that was motorsailing which should decrease the consumption. I usually have the throttle on 'medium' , as soon as you try to go flat out the consumption goes up a lot. I'd be surprised at 2l/hr but it is a bigger boat

@danielprince7228 7 месяцев назад
@@sailingcorribeemwera thanks. That's very helpful. I reckon 2 litres per hr is at full throttle, but easing off is much more eco and the speed isn't much less. I've been trying to gauge how much I should carry on longer trips.

@@danielprince7228 normally i have the 12l external tank for the outboard plus a 20 litre can in the locker, so that should do about 30 hours or 120 miles. For this trip, bearing in mind that particularly on the west coast of Scotland petrol may be harder to find, i took another 20l can, but o didn't really need it.

Is your dodger designed for your boat, or is it available for other similar sailboats? Thanks!

Hi. It was made for my boat. I actually made the metal frame and then the spray hood was made to fit that, by Jeckles in Norfolk, UK.
