If no one has told you by now, yes, Roy was the dark-haired one. And, sadly, he died of a brain tumor in 1990. He is mourned by thousands (maybe even millions) of Scottish music lovers, including those who, like me, were not fortunate enough to discover him and the Corries while they were still performing. Thanks to RU-vid and those who publish the music, though, we can still listen and watch videos - From another American Corries fan with ancestors from the Edinburgh area :-)

Likewise. Me clan was from Chestershire refugees to Dundee during King Henry VII’s reign & his son Prince Henry’s harrowing of the north(of England). Eventually all the families came America’s way.

The history of Scotland-all of it,good and bad- gave rise to songs such as this and many more,thank God for the Corries in presenting them to us in the way they did,it is simply the best music I have ever heard and hopefully people will keep this music alive by playing it for their children,it has everything.

I've heard some blame the poets for putting a false shine on the history but I for one forgive them. The Corries for one, give us the hope and romance we need to keep going forth in this hell for leather life.

The 1745 Jacobite risings was at the time the last rising of a true Scottish army. Not a profesional army like the British army they fought but an army of patriots. Thats why they are lamented for hundreds of years and the Brits are not. The British army only inflicted one defeat on the Jacobites. The defeat was Culloden. but they had to wait till the jacobites were starved and exhausted to beat them.

Urg these comments...I see not many people know what actually happened in history, the Scots expected a French army to come and help them but only 7 men came, known as the 7 men of Moidart, in the end the Scots got butchered...its a sad tale and a caution to relying on others to come save us..

The English jacobites or proto-jacobites got trapped by the secret police in a great ambush in Wales where the welsh and English of that side were slain, sold as slaves or scattered to the four winds. Near all we’re captured and died a “traitors” death for loyalty to their realm & King. Memory is failing me I think this was in the Republican dictatorship era under Cromwell but maybe was after at the onset of the orangish wars(either way it was b4 the term Jacobite got its name) I actually forget. Fun facts for Americans tho the Old Dominion Virginia & Marlyland & Delaware fought for the King when New England & England & Scotland were all ruled by Cromwell & lackeys. They were so called Old Dominion & Cavaliers bc they fought for the actual monarchy not the pisspoor banker/usurers monarchy that stood for little during the 1770s. Im not saying monarchists at that time had no sense but rather that the poison was already baked into the dough @ that time. Oligarch Freemasons on one side and Bank of England Freemasons on the other side(actually both sides).

Many thanks to "RU-vid", and the newly-discovered (and subscribed-to) fan club. The News Fae Moidart" has been a favorite since hearing it in Edinburgh in 1983. I am sorry to hear of Roy's passing. Does anyone know if Ronnie is still alive and performing their soulful ballads here in "Americae"? If so, is there a schedule of appearances? Are there any CD's and/or DVD's available for purchase? Many thanks, from a Loyal American Listener

At the time Jacobites were at Derby there actually was a French force of 15.000 men assembling at Boulogne to invade from the south. Including that force the Jacobite strength would be around 20.000 men against the government troops numbering roughly 15.000 at most. But the French troops were called off after they heard the Jacobites were heading back north because the highlanders were misinformed that they were facing three armies with a total manpower of roughly more than 20.000 men.
@Fernandwinnie
@Fernandwinnie 7 лет назад
French support for the Stuart cause was only lip service...by the time Derby was reached there were two large government armies ready to defend London....the Jacobites only numbered some 5,000 and mustered little support by the time they had crossed the border...Charles was indeed "A rash adventurer" who should have remained in Rome.
@viciouswolf1111
@viciouswolf1111 7 лет назад
Charlie was greedy and stupid. If he had been happy with taken back Scotland he'd have succeeded. The Laird George Murray should have took a stand against him and commanded his men to set defensive positions at Berwick.
@viciouswolf1111
@viciouswolf1111 7 лет назад
That wasn't true. The French never sailed. They should have risked the storms. Mortar fire on London would have been enough to encouage the clans to attack.
@ironduke7423
@ironduke7423 7 лет назад
+viciouswolf1111 that was actually the thing about it, they could consolidate in Scotland and have a fighting chance creating a Stuart Scotland but the original plan was a Stuart on the throne of Great Britain and not only Scotland. And that is indeed where we reached for something greater but lost all we had gained.
@AndrewHennessey

I actually blame this on the food at Watford Services ... the clans just couldn't eat the all day breakfast which had been cooked 'all day'

There was a strong nationalist element to Jacobitism. The inscriptions on swords reading "For God, my country, and King James - Prosperity to Scotland and no Union" made it pretty clear that separatism was a key part of it. The "Highland v Lowland" thing has been massively overplayed: though there were very few Jacobites from south of the Tay, there were a lot of English-speaking, trouser-wearing folk from the North-East in BPC's army (and a fair few Highlanders on the govt side, come to that).

@carolinus7566

Aye! But independence (severe autonomy) w the same King of the 3 kingdoms: Scotland, England, & Ireland. At very least they were wanting to get Scotland with James III(depending on time period) or Charles III(tha Bonnie prince6 later on.
@Hess512

I think you mean the rightful King. Not a ‘different’ king. The house of Stewart was the royal Scottish family. The Hanoverian Saxe-Coburgs have no legitimate claim on the throne of Scotland they can change their name to Windsor all they please that’s no Scottish name and they are no Scottish house. They are Hanoverian and they are illegitimate usurpers.

Greetings from an AMERICAN with Scottish ancestors. Don't worry guys I don't go around telling people I'm Scottish because I'm not... but my middle name is! Burd family from Orminston outside of Edinburgh! Charlie Burd Weaver IV! Anyway, this is a beautiful song... I can't get enough... is Williamson the one with dark hair? Did he pass away? That truly saddens me if he did. You Celts are truly warrior poets. Long live your culture and take it back in 2014 for your ancestors!

The songs rightly expressing that Scot's fi all over the land Did Rise for the rightful claiment to the Scottish crown.. IK dont know where your getting your info but Scotland was swept away with Passion for the Stewarts, Those to timid maybe stayed at home, aye but the Union was despised at this time and only oppresion and fear of death subdued more from rising. All the more reason to hail the valient men and women who did Rise..

@TheJacobiker Actually, it pains me to say it but the British Army has Culloden on some of its standards- for instance 5 (Gibralter 1779-1783 Battery Royal Artillery. Ironically they serve in the Highland Gunners (19th Regiment RA). It shouldnt be on there as usually civil wars are not considered honours, however I think that their lineage was being sought out and whoever found out how old they were had it put on where it has stayed.

Bloobear.. First of all Yes Wallace was the greatest of patriots to come from the common man of Scotland. The jacobite rising of 1745 had little to do with religion that is Unionist propoganda they want you to beleive. The majority of Jacobites were episcopilian as was LGM. However when I vocalise in defence of Jacobitisim my sympathy is predominantly for those who followed and fought for Scotlands sake. Few men and none of the comanders really wanted to take the campaing south.
@BillDFC
@BillDFC 14 лет назад
The Jacobite cause has been confused by misty sentiment over the past 260 years. He was an Italian who spent less than a year of his life in Scotland. After Culloden he took off and left the ordinary people behind to suffer. Wallace and Bruce were true heroes.....but not Charles Stuart.
