It's time to build a canoe! First we have to ake the tree a bit more horizontal - kinda difficult to work on a tree that's still standing. And then it's time to start shaping it. Chainsaws, machetes and anything else it takes to make this enormous breadfruit tree into an agile, floating, human carrying sampan. It's gonna be a long process!
VLOG2: Paddling the Lesser Sunda
I am paddling a canoe for 1500km along the South Eastern archipelago of Indonesia: the Lesser Sunda islands (or Nusa Tenggara). But first off I need to build that canoe - a traditional “sampan” - one of the oldest known types of sea vessels in the world, carved out of a single tree with bamboo outriggers for stability. Along the way I will have to rely on local knowledge of the people I meet to learn how to navigate, fish, and not die in this largely wild part of the world. There’s volcanoes, tribes, rainforest, pristine beaches, komodo dragons, savannah, crocodiles, and loads of other awesome stuff like that... It’s gonna be sick!
Adventure means a lot to me and with this vlog I hope to show the beauty, the fun, the challenges, but also the darker moments of danger, frustration, loneliness and whatever else hits me on land and at sea. I am new to the vlogging thing, so this is also an experiment in filmmaking and the difficulties of filming, editing and uploading from the middle of… anywhere!
I want to hear your thoughts! If you like or dislike or have questions on anything you see, hit me up - I told you, I am new here so your feedback is everything! I will get back to you (when I next have internet...)
Let’s go!
