I have only used parabolas for one thing, to make reflective dishes or parabolic troughs. I only used y=x2 to calculate them. You need to explain focal points other wise why bother, it’s too abstract for people unless they actually do something other than abstract math functions.

The way that you give lecture, polite, kind, and straight to the simple core, no doubt many young students will like mathematics; you became "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" of mathematics, in my opinion.....truth, it is, more than compliment......
