I have sometimes been tempted away from the Olympus system by the lure of a shiny new piece of kit or new technological release. When I am, I remind myself about the functions and features that I use and have come to rely on with my current choice of system. This video outlines the one feature that I simply adore about the Olympus OM-D system and how and where I use it.

The more I get to know the workings of my Olympus cameras, the more I love them. They are gems in the camera world that are too often overlooked because they aren't full frame.

After many years of using Olympus cameras, it was one of your videos that finally got me to figure out how to create and use a custom profile (C1/C2/C3). I now hope I can find a video on the 1 / 2 lever next to the AEL/AFL button

Hi Huw: Great video. As you know, Olympus has taken a great deal of abuse over the actual detailed menu selection but the Super Control Panel is a great feature and it is too bad that more manufactures haven't adopted a similar approach. When I was shooting Olympus, I used this panel a great deal and I do miss this type of functionality on my new camera. Albeit, I do have a custom back screen set-up that I had to create and save. Cheers, Keith

The super control panel is really powerful, it also allows me to reassign the buttons, such as ISO for example, since it is so easy to access the ISO from super menu I assigned the magnifier function to ISO button instead. Also never go lower than ISO 200, when you use the simulated ISO the camera takes the picture at ISO200 and digitally darkens it. As the result you will end up with data loss in the highlights.

Many thanks for the comment. You are quite right about the low ISO, and it is rare that I use it because I know that it is a "software" ISO as opposed to the sensor doing the work.

The SCP is a great feature, I also use the Fn button,s and customise then load into my sett,s. Portrait,s diff set up to lanscape etc, fast way of having your preferances allready set. Still, found the focus point keep,s moveing thou, that,s annoying, prob not mastered locking it.

Hi Huw - the Canon mirrorless system has a similar approach. Many functions are accessible from the standard screen but when you press the Q button, you get a whole range of functions including Aspect Ratio

Thanks Claire. Most interesting. I'm hoping to have a play with a Canon at the Photography Show in September :)

Yes the SCP is well done on the Olympus cameras. BTW, the EM-10 III has a dedicated button for it, the okay button will not get you there. My Pentax K-70 has a similar feature in both looks and features. If you need a complete run down of Olympus menus etc, I recommend Rob Trek's you tube channel.

Many Panasonic Lumix cameras have something similar, by pressing the Disp button and it comes up, it is touch. It looks nicer than the Oly. However, the Lumix one isn't as much use because the Disp button allows you to cycle through various display options, so you may have to press it multiple times to get the menu. In practice I use the Q menu instead, I can configure that the way I want it. I think Oly have done a great job, there seem to be more granular controls over functions. But I personally find the Lumix menus a little more cosy 🙂

Yea but my panasonic g9 misses focus a lot the 100-400mm is better than some of the other lenses

Next to my em5ii and em1ii I also have the Lumix gx9. It has a Q menu button that allows quick access to the type of settings you find in the SCP of Olympus. In the past I had a Fujifilm X100t which had a similar button. To me this was in the wrong spot because, as a back button shooter, I kept hitting it inadvertently and caused me to sell the Fuji. The touch pad on my gx9 is better than on my Olys but that is not a big deal as I have assigned my most important settings to function buttons and als have assigned a few settings to my sets.

I would dispute what you said about menus related to early digital cameras: "when digital cameras first came out, the menu systems were not great". Maybe some, but the original 5D, the 12 megapixel version, had a wonderfully simple menu system absolutely top notch. Canon cameras generally have the best menu system overall. I use Panasonic, Olympus, Fuji, and Canon. I do like the button that calls the full menu to screen i.e. the super control panel, very helpful; it is needed especially because the normal Olympus menu system is quite convoluted and in my opinion worse than usual.

My first was the Canon D30, and I am sorry but the menu on that was really not great at all. Granted, once you had the thing set up then essentially you didn't touch it again but I remember spending a lot of time finding and adjusting settings to get them where I wanted. The 10D was not much better either. I also had an original 5D and I agree that by then the menu system had improved dramatically. Bear in mind that the D30 was released in 2000, and the 5D in 2005 so plenty of time to work on options and get them lined up to suit a wide audience. I do agree though that the Olympus menu is horrific to navigate, and am not surprised as the various third party books that have emerged to help people navigate them. Thanks for watching and thank you for the comment.

my em5ii is a great camera but the menu is horrendous. took me forever to find the settings to add highlight and shadow indictors on the evf. the evf options are separate from the monitor settings. i want them to display and behave the same.
