I was there aged 13. The first time Liverpool had been beaten in a game that Ian Rush scored the first goal. Perry Groves came on and changed the game. 100,000 fans at the Old Wembley. Good times.
True that, you had to fight for a shirt and get picked back then. Now they are indifferent about getting a game because they are paid, while some piece of shit in a suit, tie and with a mobile is constantly telling them that Real, Barca or Atletico will come for them, so they can have 5 appearances a season for the same £1M a day.....shame 😶
Unique79 --- Meh, it was getting to be a run down shit hole even then... It's a shame they couldn't have saved it with a refurbishment, but the towers were just a shell anyway, they weren't real, just a gimmick. So Probably better it's been replaced.
Liofa agree it should’ve been replaced. But they did a seriously bad job with the design of new wembley. Literally impossible to create any sort of atmosphere in there!
Steve Williams, very under rated, one of my favourite Arsenal midfielders of ALL time, so his temperament was questionable, but his vision, passing and commitment to the shirt was second to none! Could do with Willow to sort out today’s midfield!
@Alan West I can assure you Fergie wasn't the first to play a weakened side. The competition right from it's inception in 1960 was treated as an 'inconvenience' by most top flight sides - It only really started being taken mildly seriously when it was granted a Wembley, one game final. Just check out how many 3rd Div sides have made the final (some even winning it) for proof.
@@apathyintheuk265 That's true. In 1975, for instance, none of the semi-finalists were from the first division. It was always seen as a minor trophy but it is even more so now. I agree with Alan West as well though that finishing fourth in the league is now seen as better than winning an actual trophy has downgraded it even further.
@@craiggerrard5117 The chance of qualifying for the Champions league as opposed to competing in Europa league is financially far more lucrative. It's as simple as that.
@@apathyintheuk265 Yes, but that is not a good thing. The Champions League should be for champions only. The massive central funding, which distorts domestic competitions should be removed. Not going to happen though - the money has thoroughly corrupted football.
@@craiggerrard5117 I agree but we've come a long way now for any chance of reversing the situation as it is. For decades, UEFA were trying to come up with a way of creaming the best of the top 5 or 6, maybe 7 European nations to create an 'elite' European league. They achieved that by making the old style European cup (a knock out competition) a more accommodating league format - Mission accomplished. You are aware that money dominates (all) sport, aren't you? You can trace that back to the 1970's when the FL in a desperate attempt to give the competition some credibility, upped the prize money for.... Yep - the Football League Cup.
I don't support either of these teams but this was the era of football I loved. The old Wembley with terracing. The basic stripes in the grass, the tight nets, the pitch bathed in sunshine. The mitre delta footballs, decent refereeing, great commentary. Look at what it has turned into today. Not just football , but the country as a whole.
I was at Wembley that they, supporting Arsenal as usual. With all the money, the cheating and diving and corruption (specially at FIFA level), cynical tactics, football as a sport is not interesting any more.
I was there as a Liverpool fan. Good match. Proper players. Arsenal were just getting established then I felt. I saw them late that year and they were excellent. Very good young players. Adams, Niall and co were superb.
I'm a lifelong Evertonian but I totally agree. That Liverpool team was a marvellous team. Rush a superb leader of the line. Wembley finals still meannt something and this game really was a signal of the re emergence of Arsenal as a huge trophy winning club.
This was my first trip to wembley.remember it was a blazing hot day and we were outplayed by Liverpool in the first half. We got lucky with the two Charlie goals but sang our hearts out when kenny lifted the cup. It was the start of a new era for arsenal, shame about the final the following year tho.
Outplayed by Liverpool in the first half and got two lucky goals? u sound much more like a sour Liverpool fan or a spurs supporter. How can you say the first goal was lucky? Arsenal for sure were not outplayed, not in the first half and not in the second half. And Arsenal had more chances than Liverpool and 100% deserved their victory.
I was at this match (Liverpool fan) and when Rush scored I made the stupid statement “Well we’ve won now ‘cos Rushie has scored.” LFC had never lost a match where he had scored before. My friend who was always a little negative said “Well there’s always a first time” He wasn’t wrong but I never forgave him for that!! RIP Barry, mate....
Mark Hunter Thanks For sharing I am arsenal fan and remember that game and that was the days when most league cup finals were held in April instead of stupid February or March . Yes the first time Liverpool lost when Ian Rush scored. When u said Barry i thought you meant Barry Davies the TV com mentor and i checked he is still alive, i realised after wards, I read your sentence wrong and it was your dear Friend Barry my apologies Sorry for the loss of your Friend take care Mark
And the funny thing, if I remember correctly, is after all those years of it not happening when Rush scored, it happened again at Norwich the following week when Liverpool again lost 2-1 having led by a goal by Rush.
2 years later arsenal won the league as george graham got rid of those 2 England international defenders & replaced them with hungry youngsters like winterburn & dixon. 😉 george graham never given the credit for bringing back the glory days to arsenal..... and THIS win started it all
I was 14 at that time. Had been a supporter for 7 years and hadn't seen the Arsenal win anything...until that day 💪💪💪 bounced about the living room when we scored. Good old Arsenal 😍😍
Liverpools dominance was beginning to creek. The 89 league title race was the beginning of the end. Although they won it in 90 they lost the fear factor. The fear is back 30 years later.
Nah you missed out that Liverpool went on to to buy Barnes Aldo Houghton and Beardsley and the 87-89 produced one of the best football teams in world football. The stress of Hillsborough was a big factor in Liverpools decline
Remember it well. Gutted my first ever trip to Wembley done twice by Charlie Nicholas. Still a good memory though pint in pub before hand with dad two cousins and uncle. Can't win them all... LFC.. Rip Uncle Dave and Wayne
Barry Davies was almost crying when Charlie equalised.... the 1st game liverpool lost in which Ian rush scored.with respect, arsenal where decent & on the up under gg
So sad how much the game as changed, look how much the Arsenal players are delighted to have won and the disapiontment Liverpool players are showing in losing. I watched this years FA cup final and Lingard was laughing at the end of the game he had just lost. Wtf? Fans also much more passionate pre seating and prawn sandwich times.
They have edited Barry Davies commentary . When rush scores he actually says “ I don’t have to tell you what that means” referring to the fact up til then that when rush scores Liverpool had never lost
I was there , such a great atmosphere and never say die attitude of the young gunners that day . Start of the making of Arsenal as we know them now after beating the filth at the lane . Underdogs in the semi and final . Anderson left for United the following season as he said he’d stand a better chance of winning the league 😂😂 if only he new about what was gonna happen in 88/89 . Come on you gunners... “Charlie Charlie ... Charlie Charlie
The start of the making of the Arsenal we know now…..are you fucking serious ??? This was the start of the resilient, never give up Arsenal of the mid eighties to mid nineties. The very same resilient, never say die attitude that a certain Arsene Wenger managed to slowly erode away when he brought in his sprinkling of flakey French footballers who would Chuck their toys out of their pram through to the substandard crap like Kocsielny and Coquelin. Arsenal started to slowly die when the likes of Tony Adams and Ray Parlour where let go and never adequately replaced.
@@mrflynn1205 so you actually agree with me as in the team from 86/ 87 under George until Early in Wengers reign when we won so much with the likes of Dixon , Winters , Keown, Bould , Adams , Rocky , Mickey T , the much under rated Kevin Richardson , Parlour etc . The spine has never been replaced not sure White , Gabriel and Party are even nearly close to getting there . If we had any ambitions of replacing that type of steel to our team I’d take Tarkowski , Kalvin Phillips , Tielemans, or push the boat out for Declan Rice …. But we won’t it’ll be soft players who cost less
@@mrflynn1205 yes m8 . That team was what took our club from almost nothing to the club ( not the current team or past 10 to 12 years ) it is now . Don’t think Graham was fully appreciated either the way he changed our mentality and how the club was seen . We were always big . The 85/ 86 season when West Ham were doing well we played Birmingham away when they had West Brom away and we took about 4 to 5 thousand for a nothing game end of season game . The old bill said if we’d been in West Ham’s position we’d have taken nearer 20 . We actually took to Aston Villa in the Milk cup ( league cup) over 18 thousand and were put in their seats , some in the lower holt end .
This was my first ever final I was 9 years old this was a bad season for Liverpool no trophies,, then several months later Barnes Beardsley Houghton came on to the scene they were friggin stupendous
How comes the sun is shining and looks a warm day? Hasnt the League Cup final always been played in late Feb/early March? Maybe the sun shone a little more back then?
The league cup finals used to be played in April I believe back in the day or at least in the mid to late 80's they were. Great memories I was 8 and remember everyone going mad at school on the Monday
The league cup final was always played at the end of March or the beginning of April until the late 90s. In fact, until 1983 it use to be played at 3pm on a Saturday the same as league games. Then they moved it to a Sunday in 1984 and broadcast it live.
Even though I knew the result and had seen this game growing up i was still sticking my foot out to score or stop a ball, was a great game against a great Liverpool side.
This match was the beginning of the end of Merseyside clubs dominance in English football. Arsenal under George Graham broke Liverpool dominance with 2 Div 1 league season titles. It is followed by Man Utd Alex Ferguson new era of victory and Everton sharp decline.
I was there blazing hot day ,believe it or not I enjoyed going to Arsenal home and away under George Graham .Keown,Adam's,bould,Seamen, winterburn, Samson,Nicholas,Rocastle,Parlour ,Any of that lot could walk into Arsenal today .liverpool have improved enormously fair play to them ,Arsenal have gone backwards. Herbert Chapman ,and the Hillwood family must be spinning in their graves .STAN KROENKE OUT.🤬🤬🤬
Old school fans : standing, clap their hands, and song club anthem from the 1st minuted - final whistle Current fans : take a selfie, make a video, and doing that millenials shit in stadium.
