Apply your glue from the center out, and as rapidly possible. This will keep your stretcher bars from warping .

LOVE your workshop! I also have a weldshop/painting studio, and I'm trying to research all the ways to be self sufficient with creating painting surfaces And frames. Thanks for the video!

I already did the underpainting. Can i size the back of the painting as i forgot to size the front before laying oil paint down on the front?

Ooops! Did you gesso with the hyde glue? Oil that touches the linen will deteriorate the linen. Count it up to experience! Good judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement. Good Luck!

@@thebritishperspective7674 Gesso will suffice for a size and barrier. For best practices it is best to use the RS glue as a first step.

Thanks for these videos. I have a question on sizing since am now about to use rabbit skin glue. You mention mites eating at the linen over time that receive no application of the glue on the sides. I notice most that use rsg do not apply it to the back. Since the linen is still raw in the back, would it not make sense to apply something to the back of the canvas?

That is a good question. I have heard of people applying the size to both sides, but not credible people. That would leave the area near the stretcher's uncovered. I have worked in museums and galleries and have handled thousands if not tens of thousands of paintings before 1975! It seems that the glue applied to one side is sufficient to prevent mites from eating the linens. The older masters would also advocate the use of formalin for the preservation of linen. I think that starts becoming risky. The concentration of your time should be on the application of paint, and concerns of composition and subject matter. It takes about 900 paintings to start to learn to paint. It is good to have a grasp, on the topic, but let the future archivist deal with the preservation of your paintings. Paint something worthy of preserving!

@@annsalty5615 For the preservation of paintings, I believe you should have a copy of Max Doerner's Materials of the artist. He describes in detail what I just touch on here. Remember that both Doerner and Maroger stress a bright white linen for starters. Even if the if you tone the canvas, prior to painting the bright white will give your painting added life. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M2B2KQ8/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_hsch_vapi_taft_p1_i0. There is a huge surplus of linen at Dick Blick, since most of the small mom pop shops have been absorbed by the new online shopping.

@@forsterarts i understand your point but i think putting a hard number on how many paintings you have to do to even began to learn how to is one, super discouraging to those starting out and two, speaks to the bullshit the art establishment wallows in. Basquiat made far less than that in his entire career. The BS part being that he wasn't that talented or important. The art world loves novelty. And to hear themselves talk.
