NOTES MB05: 1. Guna means personality, which is acquired by millions of previous lives, which is carried by the jeeva, which is responsible for tamo/rajo/satva Gunas (eg. Some foods / colours are loved more for no reason, which might be because of previous life’s efforts to hold on to). Mind holds on to strongly liked or strongly disliked. Anger on something or someone is natural, but holding on to it for long time is called ‘Krodha’ (Lalitha Sahasranama has one name: Krodha-kara-ankush(a-u)ojwala). If we do not give up but hold on to such anger, it will affect next lives too as it would follow jeeva to next lives. Similarly, Udanka also has built-up too much anger on Takshaka for the problems he created on his way back to offer Guru-dakshina. So in order to destroy Takshaka, he has 2 ways: he can curse Takshaka (but that would remove a portion of his Tapobalam), other way is to instigate the king who would punish him. Udanka resorts to the second option, not only to kill Takshaka, but also to ethnic cleanse (to kill the whole sarpa jaati). So, Udanka goes to Janamejaya, the emperor of Kuru dynasty. He doesn’t divulge his vengeance, but plans to instigate anger in Janamejaya, so that he would do exactly what he wants him to do. 2. Udanka goes to Janamejaya’s court and addresses, “Mitha-hitha-satya-vakya, Janamejaya!” (prepares him not to talk more, to talk in support and to stand on his words), says that wicked Takshaka made me suffer a lot for no reason, for which I ask you to punish Takshika and all Nagas, who killed your father, Parikshit, the great king who donated a lot to the poor, performed a lot of sacrifices (yagnas), the one who is equal to Arjuna, the one who carried forward your dynasty, with the fires of his most dangerous venom (poison). Just to realize the words of a rishi (Shringi cursed Parikshit) Takshaka killed your father; let other Ritviks (rishis) perform ‘Sarpayaga’ and say the words (Svaahakara) to kill him and all other Nagas. Udanka has anger on all other nagas too because none of them responded to his prayers to them in Pathala. This would definitely move and enrage Janamejaya, who starts the sacrifise of all snakes in the creation. 3. Rishis listening to this in Naimisha forest wonder at Sarpayaga. Agni is called Havya-vahana (Havis offered to Gods in yagna through Agni). So how did Agni accept snakes? Still few snakes are seen now, which means Sarpayaga did not succeed, which means it was stopped, how? They asked Sauti (Ugrasravasu). 4. Sauti explained: Maharshi Bhrigu and his wife, Puloma were living as Grihastas in their ashram. Nityagnihotras means those who maintain Agni in their home (Agni-griha, a room in house to maintain fire as yagna, who is called ‘Sarva Devata Swarupa’). So while leaving house for river-bath, husband (Bhrigu) says wife (Puloma) to safeguard the fire (by putting few twigs or wood) till he returns home. Pulomasura (rakshasa) was having lust on Puloma (same name) for long time even before she married Bhrigu. He enters ashrama sees Puloma and thinks to abduct her. Before doing it, he asks Agni to confirm whether she is Puloma. Agni chooses smaller sin (whether to lie or to say truth and face Bhrigu’s curse), and says truth; yes, she is Puloma. This shows how important it is to say truth only. Pulomasura takes form of a boar and carried Puloma, who was a pregnant, and due to the agitations, she gives birth to a baby boy, Chyavana. He was like the tip of a volcano, with great glow, he curses him who was abducting his mother, and makes Pulomasura to ashes. Puloma being a great chaste wife, her tears became a river, which was named by Brahma as ‘Vadhusara’. Puloma returned ashrama with Chyavana, narrates to Bhrigu who curses Agni for being the reason (if there was no Agni, rakshas would’ve left Puloma for benefit of doubt) to eat everything without discriminating (Sarva Bhakshaka). Truth is even the lie said to protect Dharma or an unprotected life (Vedic preposition). 5. Because of Bhrigu’s curse, Agni became impure (Asuchi), so he cannot vehicle the Havis offered to Gods or Kavis to Pitru-devas for being impure (Udanka had to do achamana even after eating Amrita), so Gods did not rain on earth, no produce on earth and no Yagas / Kavya-vahana for Pinda-pradhan. Agni withdraws his heat and light, as he became impure, cannot perform his duties. Agni says, because of your curse, you have affected the whole system. He says, I too can curse you but I won’t because of your wisdom in Vedas, bhakti towards Gods, and my curse shouldn’t affect your duties. 6. So all Rishis and Gods go to Brahma and explain the situation. Brahma says, Agni you’re responsible for the whole earth’s heat, light, life, and for being Havir-vahana, for being such a great personage, how can you withdraw yourself? He says I cannot undo Bhrigu’s words, you would stay Sarva-bakshaka, however your purity would not be lost, so from now there would be nothing that can impure Agni (Suchi). Then the whole system was restored to normalcy by Brahma’s interference. 7. Chyavana (son of Bhrigu-Puloma) marries Sukanya, daughter of king Sharyati. Chyavana was doing penance with open eyes; Sukanya pokes eyes thinking that they are fireflies in anthill, repents and agrees tomarry him though he is blind and old man, Ashwini devatas come and ask whether she is chaste, they challenge to take same form as her husband and take bath in a pond, and then she should recognize her husband, if she is a chaste wife. Then in order not to lose her chastity, she prays to Parvati to get the wisdom required to recognize her husband. For her chastity, Ashwini devatas grant Chyavana young age and eyes to live happily with Sukanya. They give birth to son, Pramati who marries Ghritachi (Apsara who arose during Sagar manthan) and gives birth to Rura. (Story from Devi Bhagavatam) 8. Rura engages (promises) to marry with Pramadhwara (daughter of gandharva Vishwa Vasuru and Menaka, who grew up in Sthulakesha's ashram), but she dies of snakebite while playing with other girls. Rura cries a lot on her death and prays all Rishis and Gods to bring Pramadhwara back to life. If I have performed good karma, offered sincerely in yagnas, performed penances, if I had sincere respect towards Gurus, someone please bring her back to life. Whoever nullifies the poison in her with any mantra and bring her back to life, to them I would offer all my powers of penance, services and yagnas. A God going in sky-route says you’re a scholar of all vedas, how can life comeback into a body once that’s left? But seeing your anguish and grief, I offer you a boon, to bring her back to life if he sacrifices half of his life time (Ayush). She comes back to life and they live happily. 9. Ever since, Rura developed a deep vengeance towards snakes. He used to always carry a thick and long stick to kill every snake that he ever saw. Once he sees a non-poisonous old snake, Dunduba, hits it. The snake becomes a rishi and says, you’re from a great dynasty, and I’m non-poisonous, and old, why did you hit me? Rura asks his story and Dunduba says: My name is Sahasrapadu, once I pranked on my friend, Khagama who was doing Agni-karya to scare him by throwing a non-poisonous snake. He was startled and he cursed me to live as a non-poisonous snake till Rura from Bhrigu’s dynasty comes and hits you. Then he counsels Rura: a Brahman should have peace, balance, truth, mental stability, empathy, wisdom, and mercy on life forms, constructive arguments, according to Vedas. Your wife came back to life, live happily and do not continue this violence on snakes. He ends by saying, your father Pramati’s disciple, ASTIKA maharshi stopped the cruelest Sarpayaga, being son of such a great father, how can you kill snakes? (how? Explained after 4 pravachanas). This is one of the greatest episodes of Adiparvam. The very utterance of Asthika's name removes all types of Satpa Doshas. Svasti!
