A look at how a lack of compression, and subsequent rush to the top end of the slide (the catch), caused Damir Martin to miss out on a Olympic Gold.

In summary, Damir Martin lost because his boat didn't 'surge' on the recovery during the last stroke. This was because by then he was rowing virtually at backstops (and looking across, first for the finish line, then at Drysdale). If he had taken a full stroke ( like Mahe Drysdale) his boat would have accelerated on the first third of the recovery... and he'd have won.

But when we look at the Paris Olympics the stroke rate is higher than ever.

Hi, Derek! Greetings from the Slough! Gosh, your comments are so much more insightful than anything the official commentators offer. I really miss your video clips of my own rowing (other end of the talent spectrum from these guys! 🤣). I hope you and the fam are well!

Hi Heather! Great to hear from you :) I try my best to give decent commentary and insight into how I see these crews even though I know my production values are not the greatest. I need to work on those video making skills haha. You do fine out there, don;t sell yourself short; and remember, the ultimate goal is to get out there and have fun!!

So basically if Damin Martin didn't shorten his stroke and tried to have the same long compression stroke and did the same long strong stokes all the way to the finish he would've won.

I've been rowing for 4 years now but come from racing bikes my entire life now being in the mid fifties. What I've learned is no two people are the same. Take for example Froom and Ulirck: one is able to spin at 130rpm while the other smashing it at +400Watts for lengthy times. Anyone else attempting to spin that fast will burn up but Froom does it well. You clowns seem to have some sort of template that you want to match pro or any other rower which in my opinion is completely wrong. Muscle fiber, physique, body type is different from person to person and therefor they should be training accordingly and not listen to your bs. Bottom line, if you can sustain high wattage for a specific time (rowing course in this case) while sitting on your head, that is exactly how you should train. What you all doing (you, the other clown Amir who is far worst than you) is complete bs. I would admit I have witnessed some glimpse here and there achieving best rowing technique and it is sad but conscious that it takes practice and time. The blade bite is different, the boat makes a distinctive swoosh, and my body goes through the process effetely. Sad to see people give bad advise and many are inflating your ego to continue giving bad advice. These are pros. You cannot possible argue with their rowing technique when you haven't achieved that status yourself. It is like arguing with the guy that wrote the book. History thought us different technique are not wrong, just different. In this particular video, Drysdall wanted the win more, period. He was able to silence that guy we all know that tells you to quit. Or maybe he had a good dump that morning. Either way, pro rowing is whomever wants it more and like pain.
