Mélanie Hélène Bonis was a French late-Romantic composer who taught herself the piano at a young age and went on to study at the Paris Conservatoire with César Franck, subsequently writing over 300 pieces, especially for the piano. “le púetit mendiant” (Tje Little Beggar) comes from her Album pour les touts-petits, a collection of 20 children’s pieces published in 2013.
The right hand delivers a sad tune, almost like a song, while the left hand plays just two different chords throughout. Make sure that the tune is really expressively shaped, with a beautiful legato touch, except for the staccato notes in bars 13 and 14, when the composer’s use of a Bb adds an even deeper feeling of melancholy, almost like gentle weeping. Work hard to get the notes in the left hand going down together at exactly the same time, and with the same weight. Make the dynamic contrasts really clear and don’t forget to slow down and make a diminuento on the last line. (Trinity official)
