Arms races have existed as long as humans have been warring and the Cold War was no exception. In the late 1970’s the U.S. fielded the F-16 Fighting Falcon and F/A-18 Hornet air superiority fighters. The Soviet Union, meanwhile, fielded its own advanced fighter that was in many ways superior. With amazing agility, a high thrust-to-weight ratio, and a helmet-mounted sight with associated high off-boresight weapon, the MiG-29 Fulcrum was a credible opponent to the West.
On this episode, retired Indian Air Force Air Marshal Harish “Fulcrum 1” Masand phones in from Central India to describe the MiG-29 and his key role inducting the Fulcrum into the IAF. He describes the variants, weapons, and how it was so easy to fly that he was able to put on aerial demonstrations with only 20 hours of experience in the Fulcrum.
Read more about Air Marshal Masand’s experience flying the MiG-29 (hushkit.net/20..., fighting it against a Mirage 2000 (hushkit.net/20..., and why he lovingly referred to the it as the “Super Hunter” (hushkit.net/20....
Guest co-host Darin “Wang” Chung from episode 26 joins us after the interview to describe his experiences training against Malaysian MiG-29s during one of his Marine Corps F/A-18D Hornet unit deployments. There is no listener question segment in this episode.
Bumper music by Jaime Lopez / announcements by Clint Bell. Episode artwork adapted from original photography by Rich Cooper. This episode was produced by our friends at the MuscleCar Place Podcast Network.

GREAT episode, well done as usual FPP. Mig29 has been my favorite fighter since I saw it in the late 80s/early 90s at the Abbotsford intl air show, the first time the Russians/Soviets came to a Western airshow with the Mig29. A Canadian pilot my family knew got to fly their B model that weekend, and after he went on and on about it the next time we had dinner together, I was a young teenager smitten with the Mig29. Built so many models, flew every flight sim with the Mig29 (the early Falcon 3.0 had a Mig29 upgrade come out shortly after this - thank you Gilman Louie). Anyhow, great interview, I went and searched out the article Massand mentioned, it's fantastic too. Both guests were great, Wang was great too.

WHOOOO MiG-29! I guess next is Su-27/30/33/34/35? can't wait! There's some things I'd like to mention about things that haven't got mentioned in this episode: >MiG-29 and Su-27 family shaped like so to exploit the result of Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute's research in blended wing-body design to increase lift without severely increasing drag. The leading edge vortex generators would create vortex at high angles of attack that would bleed off right next the two vertical tail area, which allows the plane to control it's yaw even at high angles of attack(like the F/A-18 series, and one of the reasons why F-16 have angle of attack limitations). This is why the Su-27 and MiG-29 looks very similar. However, MiG-29 proves to be the "inferior" among the two designs after production for it's lack of internal volume: Soviet avionics aren't really as small or as light as their western counterparts. Su-27 aren't really affected because of it's large size, but for MiG-29 this means less internal fuel space, not to mention 2 engines burn fuel faster than one. This become MiG-29's major design "flaw" that still affect it even until MiG-35 to some degree. >while MiG-29 is designed with blended wing-body design that effectively increased it's lift area and have relaxed stability, it doesn't originally come with Fly-By-Wire unlike F-16 and F/A-18 or even it's larger counterpart, the Su-27. Later variants eventually included FBW. >MiG-35 while looks similar to MiG-29, is actually slightly larger than it. Kinda like the F/A-18A/B/C/D vs F/A-18E/F. It also lacks the FOD door(said to be unnecessary), and doesn't have different model from single seater to two seater. The single seater would have the space behind it filled by a fuel tank that can be removed to place the second seat and make it a two seater. >While MiG-29OVT have thrust vectoring, currently no production Fulcrum has it. MiG-35 is said to offer it as option but there's no confirmation yet

I reckion I know much more now than I ever did back when I was flying in the military - about various platforms. I only just discovered the site. As an example, regarding the Fulcrum, we - at squadron level - knew only the basics of the aircraft. Some additional information: Except the revolutionary IRST system and HMS, the MiG-29 had/has another cool feature. If the pilot ever found himself with his bearings lost, upside down, in a dive, confused... there is a switch on the stick, which, when pressed by the pilot, it would turn over the aircraft the right side up and level it out. The MiG-29A (the original) can only carry 2 medium range R-27(E)R/T on the inner stations. The other 4 stations can only carry R-60/73. The updated MiG-29S (Fulcrum-C) had a new radar which allowed for the use of R-77s, which could be mounted on all stations. The radar had the ability to TWS 2 targets at the same time. The electronics also featured an inboard ECM system (as Jell-O said) The MiG29A also has an interesting russian radio beacon navigation system, carried over from the MiG-21 Oh and I think we can all agree that Enzo overselled the Eurofighter a bit :-D
@samivwow
@samivwow 4 года назад
@Kaizaro123 Fly-by-wire only means that the controls of the pilot are not directly connected to the flight surfaces, but to a computer which then directs them. There is a flight control system in the MiG and it does have dampers as many other aircraft also do, both military and civil (B737, F-15, ect.... both are not fly-by-wire). The button in question is actually a Autopilot Level Flight button, just another function of the autopilot. The MiG-29 has an Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS) which takes care of this. Gyros play a big part in aircraft ! Hopefully this has helped out a bit, for further information try searching trough Google for the MiG-29 AFCS and also how autopilots work in general. Cheers! I can try and look up some documentation if you are interested

In Soviet service, the MiG-29B would have operated close to the battlefield and provided air defence and counter air against enemy air combat fighters as well as attack NATO strike fighters and providing top cover for Soviet ground troops and tanks plus it works in conjunction with mobile SAM systems such as the TOR missiles. The MiG-29 would operate in normal operations at the air base but looking at the distance between the air base and frontline, it would too time consuming plus it would affect the jet's radius and time on station. The MiG-29 would operate in dispersed sites near to the battlefield which helped reduce time to action as well as giving more time to protect ground troops while protecting Soviet attack jets. The Su-27 would provide top cover and also assist long range bombers to achieve its strategic missions. In Soviet missions, the MiG-29 would have operated in large numbers. It would require low maintenance thanks to its rugged design.

The French MICA is equivalent to the R27 as it comes in 2 versions : EM and IR. The IR version has a range close to that of an Aim-120B. It's also the first western missile that was equiped with thrust vectoring.

It's an airshow trick that demonstrates an aircraft's overall maneuverability, which can be beneficial in combat in other ways--if not exactly the way it's depicted.
