TAMESIDE WALK FEATURING HARTSHEAD PIKE, KNOTT HILL, PARK BRIDGE AND ROCHER VALE
"Historic Pike of Hartshead”
Filmed 22nd April 2017
Post-production completed 26th May 2017
My recent fascination with walks featuring monuments or towers leads me to discover Hartshead Pike. This pretty hill in the Borough of Tameside in Greater Manchester has a small tower on its top, so I work out a walk starting and ending here. I see a little of the industrial past of Tameside as my walk takes me to a disused ironworks, now a heritage centre, before returning to the point of interest that drew me to this area…..
Filmed in the borough of Tameside in the county of Greater Manchester. Locations include Hartshead Pike, Knott Hill, Park Bridge Heritage Centre and Rocher Vale.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.
Any other names credited in this film, i.e. Bob Morgan and Martin Roy, are pseudonyms, which I used at the time of making this film. However, I no longer use these pseudonyms as I want viewers to be clear that my films are completely my own work.

I was brought up in another Tameside town (Stalybridge) and, although Hartshead Pike has been on the skyline of our trips around the area when I was growing up, I have only ever visited it once, as far as I'm aware. I did the walk with my father when I was quite young and remember having to be carried back part of the way because I'd tried to run down the hill and twisted my ankle! Lovely to hear about the history of the tower from a man with a surname quite common to the area and one that some of my ancestors, on my father's side, share. Thank you for the video, Patrick.

I think that the tower on Hartshead Pike is the one that I used to spot when travelling on the train from Manchester to Oldahm a number of years ago. I often wondered what it was in the distance, and thanks to you Patrick, it's solved the mystery. There are some real good views of Greater Manchester from that point, and the structure is quite a size, too. The Park Bridge heritage centre looks interesting to visit, with the remains of the old iron works still in existence. Nice to see some good old industrial archaeology of the area, together with the Rocher Vale. Many thanks, Patrick, a real good video.

I think I discovered Hartshead Pike when I was searching online for towers/follies/monuments around Greater Manchester. It was a very different walk to do at the time, but I enjoyed filming it like all the others. This isn't an area I know at all, so it was nice to visit for a change including Rocher Vale. Thanks Ffranc for watching and commenting 👍

I am a real fan of hilltop Obelisks, towers and the like so this was a real treat for me. I always considered that area as just urban sprawl but I am so glad to be wrong as the countryside looks really lovely. Such a shame about the graffiti on the entrance and the fact that the windows are all bricked up; what a waste as it would be amazing to go up it. Thanks again for a brilliant movie.

I've been a fan of hilltop obelisks too which is why I made several films in places where I encountered them. Thanks for your kind comments and for watching 👍

Worth a visit as I discovered for myself and not far from home for me either. It's a little less touristy than some of the other places too which is always a nice bonus. Thanks Frank and Lee. Cheers, Patrick :-)

Another lovely walk Patrick, thanks for sharing. Imagine having a sweet shop in the tower in the 1930's, it's a pity they bricked it up,there are lots of these follies and towers around aren't there,in Wentworth (Rotherham area) near me I can think of three just in that small village, there may be more,it's only a small village but it also has hidden away an old stately home bigger than Buckingham palace. Thanks also for the replies Patrick,it's great to hear your thoughts and an insight into the process making these films and all the hours of effort you put into them,it's much appreciated. Pete.

This was a late addition to my plans for my 2017 films, but I came across Hartshead Pike when I was browsing online, so I decided to come here to film. I found this walk online too. I can imagine the tower would have been great with its sweet shop. Always a pleasure to reply Pete as you also take the time to comment as well as watch of course. Many thanks, Patrick :)

Another walk that brings back memories. I took part in an archaeological project at Park Bridge and have walked up to the Pike twice. I enjoy all your videos but especially the ones to places I know.
