This was a longish running ITV series fronted by Dr Miriam Stoppard (www.miriamstop... & en.wikipedia.o...) and was more 'human interest' that the science / medical focus of the BBC.
This programme is important because it reports some of the problems that I had directly when studio staff were so afraid that some refused to work if a person with HIV was physically present in the studio. I worked with Union representatives and managed to overcome these fears in two cases. However, it's clear that in this instance the issues were not resolved and so the programme reports having to move out of the studio to another location - as Dr Stoppard highlights at the start of the programme.

that's my dad at around 12mins - a haemophiliac and victim of the infected blood scandal but I cannot believe how positive he is... he has the chance to hold the government to account and chose to talk about how he wouldn't change the treatment. we lost him in 1991, he was 45 - @Martin Weaver, you have no idea how grateful i am for you uploading this. I mean this quite literally, it's the only thing I have to remember him by and here he is, moving, speaking, smiling. Although I mean it, a 'thank you' doesn't seem to come close.

Dear Chris, Thank you for your kind comments. It’s really gratifying to me that this Archive can have the positive effect it has for you. So many people have died and each deserves to be remembered as do those who were also affected and left behind. It seems that you now have a more complete memory of your father and that is priceless. You are very welcome. Martin

Oxygene, which can also be heard in the amusement arcades today! - There's some sort of amusement that i've not tracked down yet that seems to play several seconds of the track, maybe one of the crane/toy grabbers. I wonder if they got the license from Mr Jarre to use it hmmmm

Thank you so much for posting this, my father worked on this particular show. I remember him asking us how we felt about him wanting to do it. We were all in agreement that he must do it . I remember the struggle to find a venue , and my father’s disappointment with the technicians at Yorkshire television threatening to strike. This was ground breaking television . Proud of my Dad for being brave enough to take a stand . RIP Dennis Elliott 🙏

@@aids_archive a little known fact , when the camera stopped rolling , Miriam and my Dad gave them all a hug and a kiss . Sadly not on camera, but did you notice her touching the lady from America . This was deliberate . It was way before Princess Diana , and headline news ! Again thank you for sharing 🙏 blessings sent your way 🙏

Thanks for posting this video Martin. Interesting to feature a male/female couple at the beginning, rather than only profiling homosexual men, showing that the disease can affect people of any sexual orientation. A fear of stigma prevented the woman from revealing the true reason for her trip to the UK. This stigma was highlighted in Eastenders, who chose to have a male heterosexual character with HIV (Mark Fowler).

I think it's the added linn drum track that gives it punch depth dancyness and the funkier synth sequences it is a really good re recording for 1981 as this the same version of the tune used from september 81 when this started on itv. Iwonder who did this? Martin rushent lolll it has his feel a bit human league dare ish, i agree its funky good!!

Interesting that back when this programme was broadcast people constantly referred to HIV as AIDS when they are actually two different things.

There has been and still is lots of talk about the 'innocent victims' and those that deserved to get it. We still get that around the Corona Virus and people who refuse vaccines. @@aids_archive The same thing happened in San Francisco where the staff wouldn’t mic up the ‘victims’ I’m sure youv'e read Norman Fowler’s book on the subject but I can never get over the thought of him telling Mrs Thatcher that a leaflet was going to every home in Britain telling people what anal sex was. They were far from perfect but Norman Fowler did tryhis best. I can’t help but feel his lack of knowledge about sexual mores and the prejudice in his party must have held him back. The real impact where I live was IV drug users. As an Aberdeen fan we used to taunt our Edinburgh rivals Hibs with the nastiest abuse during football matches. I probably went with the crowd. Shame on me. Awful.
