@@josephphillips9485the banjo is originally a West African instrument (Akonting). Brought here by slaves with gourds. Black slaves and poor mountain white people intermingled more than most think. It was more of a class system

Got to see them once in concert a few years before Dr Ralph passed. At the intermission I went to their table to look at cd's. He was standing there with Nathan his grandson. I wanted to say something to him but just couldnt. To this day I wonder why. I kind of regret it, 'cause Ralph, carter, and the Clinch mt. boys are my favorite . My dad could see Clinch Mt. from his childhood home.
By this time, Keith Whitley left the Clinch Mountain Boys to become a hitmaker; sadly, he also continued to drink, which took his life at age 34 on May 9, 1989. Had he been more like Ricky Skaggs, who like Whitley also played in the CMBs, he may have lived a little longer.
Thank's for sharing this show, my mom went to school with Ralph and Carter, so we got to know there music pretty well growing up, they were her favorites of course.
Been listening to The stanleys for years but never saw this somehow. Dr Ralph always gets acclaim for his singing , and rightfully so, but I think his banjo playing is underrated. I love good ,traditional banjo pickin . Out of them all ,Ralphs my favorite. Listen to boar hog if you want a great sample.
What a treasure to enjoy... I was never privileged to see Dr. Ralph Stanley in person, but I have loved his music. This is the next best thing. He will very much be missed.
I am sorry you did not get to experience that it is something i will never forget just talking to him was something special i last seen him in New York shortly after sandy had hit the eastern seaboard and he still put on a hell of a show and talked for well over a hour after not till the last person left did he leave Dr Ralph thank you and god bless him
Doc Stanley and my daddy have passed on now, but I can hear his accent and his older sister (who spent many a dear appreciated hour sitting me on her lap and scratching my back). God bless you Doc Stanley and my daddy and aunt, to whatever extent there is a God to grant it!
In response to a question on here, my recollection is that this was at the Banjo Cafe in Santa Monica CA. Incidentally Vince Gill and his then wife Janis were in the audience along with Emory Gordy Jr.
@@lemmykilmister9979y old timers know that.. we need to suck the young people in.. Mary Ann.. I gotta tell you my kids in their 30s know these toons
Having lost Jesse McReynolds and Bobby Osbourne within a could days makes it really important to share these old videos. My kids come from some great music on both sides of the family and they know it but they don't play.. my one has the basics and I think I need to encourage her .I don't have the rhythm but I know the chords so I can help her carry it on... Gonna buy me a mandolin
I could have seen him in my humble local Mineral VA.. multiple times but I didn't know who would go with me then.. now that he's gone I've found multiple people who would have but they didn't go see him either.. I get a chance I'm going to see performers that matter to me
Saw him many times in concerts especially the last 20 years. Went to his weekend concert in Norton VA on top of the mountain a couple of times; many other good bands there but his was the best! I miss his old time music!
This native will try to dance ,I think they call this blogging, dont matter its that i love this music,Shall we dance,Thank you Lord,Always hold my hand ,never let go,Amen
Ralph and his prime: Late 40's early 50's........... Its a shame Keith didn't come back from Nashville to his roots and rejoined Ralph to walk side by side for 20 more years............
@@clarkartman9540 Keith been dead 31 years and still not in the cmhof what a joke but not saying nothing bad because I'm a huge Keith Whitley fan but Carter was the best with Ralph and Roy Lee Center's but Keith Roy Lee sounds a lot alike imo

The phrasing on the word 'mother' around 25;00 is absolutely incredulous.. These were the days.. priveledged to have been around for many of these shows.. I played at Ralph's homeplace with 'Buddy Moore" otherwise known as 'hook & beans'.. sounded just like Ralph when he wanted to.. anyone know what became of old hook?
Ralph looked much much older come 1987. Who is that on lead on all I ever loved was you? Sounds like an older version of Roy Lee Centers and Larry Sparks together lol
What would be the typical income that the leader of the band would get (to distribute to everyone in the band) in a small venue like this and with an act as good as Ralph Stanley and the Clinch MTN. Boys?
Same tour, one of Ralph's farewell short tours, boosting his heritage man valued the Instrument like KNOONE ever held one with more appreciation a legacy still spanning the globe.
