Victoria Proudler is a pianist, composer, music teacher and examiner, who makes sure that her compositions are fun to play, evoking a little bit of “wow” factor for the audience.
A toccata is normally a virtuosic piece for a solo instrument (offten the organ), with lots of fast-moving passages, generally written to show off the high skill level of the performer. This “Toccatina”, or “Little Toccata” has the sense of continual movement that you’d expect in this kind of piece, with the right-hand quaver movement starting in bar 1. This pattern keeps going almost right the way through until the end, where you, as the soloist, finally get a rest.
It can be tempting to rush the quavers, especially when getting louder, so be careful to keep them under control, especially when there are larger leaps. From bar 9, there is a call-and-response between the hands, so you will want to make the left-hand quavers sound just as smooth and even as those in the right hand - imagine two people having a conversation, with the left hand interrupting the right, as the music gradually gets louder and louder until bar 16. Are the two characters having an argument, maybe?
The excitement of this piece comes from the constant movement, the. laps and jumps, and the ups and downs of the dynamics. A fast speed isn’t so important here - the metronome mark is useful, as is the “Expressively” marking, reminding us that the music should never sound out of control, not should any of the details be missed.
