My '17 YZ250F started bogging and popping like a week ago. Tomorrow I will try and do most of this work and see how she does. Thank you for your knowledge.
@@UpAllNight91 Today I put in a Quantum Fuel Pump with a fuel pressure reg and she starts first or second kick. I also cleaned the throttle body, fuel injector and the idle screw. Thanks again!
Mane I checked my fuel pump filter bcuz my 13 rmz 250 was stalling wen I push choke in at 35 clicks , unless I turn the choke nob all the way to 45-50clicks out I can push choke in an no stall but mane my filter so dirty it looked super black n it was a bug on the outside of filter ,don’t ask cuz it’s no way I can ever see how it got there but now she idles at 35click out with no choke , got a aftermarket fuel pump n kit off eBay for super cheap but it was a Japanese part not Chinese
@@trentweeks1071if the regulator gives out first then the regulator is at fault. The regulator is what limits fuel pressure not the pump. I see many times that a fuel pump complete assembly is changed when only the regulator needed to be replaced. If you can prove that the regulator is not the limiting factor as in bleeding off pressure then in fact the pump is at fault. The regulator also needs to hold pressure. The pump runs none stop so if you cut power to the pump and immediately lose pressure then the regulator is not holding an is at fault.
@@whiteman3075 hey bro my fuel pump drizzles a bit not too much is that normal it will leak more if I tilt it I took my gas tank off that’s how I noticed that it was leaking a bit
Hello UpAllNight91, ive been watching your vids on the YZ450F and using your vids on my own 2017 YZ450F, i have a few startup issues when kickstarting it most times it takes me like 5-10 kicks to get her going and even when i turn it off and try to kick start it again straight after it take a few kicks when warm, any ideas how i can fix this issue ? cheers.
Hello . Do you know when was the last top end? Sometimes a tired piston and rings can take a few more kicks than normal to fire up. Also sometime a old worn spark plug can cause hard starting
Do you know why my yz450f 2015 dies after 30seconds i checked it gets fuel and it doesbi took out the whole electrical system out when doing a rubuild and but it back togheter but i put 1 cable to the wrong place ut was thw killswitch cable and rhe cooland sensor i forgot to plug in and than i did it right i started right up but after that it stalls on me
Is the ECU mounted correctly with the up side faced up like it should be? They have a tip over senser built into the ECU and if its not mounted correctly it will shut the bike off thinking its tipped over.
@UpAllNight91 I have an issue on my 21 yz250fx….bike fell over on stand at track blew 15a fuse replaced and bike started again but after riding noticed the fuel pump wouldn’t shut off. Any insight before I buy relays>pump>ecu? I checked connections and grounds all seem normal.
Do you know where to find the replacement 0 ring for the fuel pump ? Or even the size of that o ring ? My original one was bad and can't seem to get any help from quantum
I have like a million o rings. But a good start is to swing by harber freight and pick up a o ring kit for like 8 bucks. It has a ton of o rings at various sizes. That should have one in there for you
Question, I have a bike that has been sitting for years. Changed the spark plug (has spark), replaced the fuel pump (was corroded), and did an oil change. I put gas down the cylinder as it wouldn't start and after a lot of kicks I got it to run for a brief second before it turned off. What else should I look for?
Hello. If she can bark off for a second when you put gas in the cylinder than is safe to say the motor is good. I would check that the fuel pump is producing fuel pressure with 12 volts ran to it. Next thing would be injector. In my experience when a bike sits so long that it trashes the fuel pump it often takes out the injector with it. I have had luck a few times by back flushing the injector but in most cases it just needs a new one. If you get a new one I highly suggest a OEM one from yamaha
Usually when they drip fuel when the pump is off, I find one of the o rings either didn't fit and seal well or is not fully seated correctly. When that happens I take the pump back apart and check the o rings. Sometimes the ones included are not a good fit, often the original can be reused to get a good fit. And if all else fails I grab my harbor freight o ring kit and see if I can find one that does the trick.
Hey mate is it possible for the pumps to go bad after sitting for a long time? Let my 2014 yz450f sit for 2 years and now won’t even burp after 100 kicks, I drained fuel, cleaned injector, etc, it’s got a brand new top end also so I’m guessing fuel pump is culprit
For sure. Very common when they been sitting for some time. I usually just check the pump like I did in the video with a battery and pressure gauge. You will most likely find it bad. When they sit that log not only the pump motor can go bad but also the fuel pressure regulator thats on the pump housing. Also sometimes the injector can get gummed up from sitting as well. But I start with the pump and keep my fingers crossed that the injector is ok. 80% of the time it is.
Ive got a 2017 having a bogging issue after about 45 minutes its the electrics in the pump goung bad after hot .. i cant find the full rebuild kit on quantum i see it for all balls any help would be great
Hello. If it happens after everything gets hot it could be the fuel pump but also could be the stator. Both quantum and all balls are good kits, either one will work well. If that doesnt fix it up maybe take a jab at the stator.
Hello. It can be ordered from the OEM sections of parts dealers. Here is a link to a video I put together showing how to order OEM parts ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-slOfGOMQshs.html .. I got a 2014 yz250f has spark, replaced fuel injector, but fuel pump doesn’t do anything when you test it, doesn’t even hold pressure, I’d love some help. Thanks
I ordered a new oem fuel pump for mine, going to install it this weekend I'll let you know if it helped,my bike runs fine when I bump start it but doesn't kick,I'm thinking my airfilter might have too much oil in it aswell as I bought a cheap ready to use one

hey boss i just replaced my fuel pump in my 15 yz450 and now it wont turn over at all. was a 60$ ebay pump and filter. is there any way to prime it or should i consider the pump bad
Bike turns on then shuts of two seconds after its running could use your opinion on what you think it is the time I did get it to start I made it bark then it turned off again. When I kick it it starts for a second or two then turns off what you think the issue could be?
Hello. I would check the fuel pump. Make sure its making good pressure and holds the pressure well. Next thing I would do is back flush the injector. Sounds like it's starving for fuel. I had a bike here that did the same thing and it was a weak pump.
Hi bro I have a question, my yzf 250 losing power when Im on full throttle(like starts bogging a little) , many people told me that the fuel pump is problem. what do you think about it? thanks 🙏
Hello. It could be the fuel pump but I have also see spark plugs cause the same issue. I have also seen throttle position sensors do the same. I would first start by changing the plug, and check the throttle position sensor if you have the hand hand tuner or if yours is a 2019 or newer you can use your phone. If all that checks out good then I would dig into the fuel pump. Good chance its just a plug, I've seen so many shops over look that
What do you do when you cold start? Pull the choke? Whats your choke knob set to (turns counterclockwise from closed). Dealing with my first FI. No start at all or idle. Starts when i open up throttle and dies really quick. Cant keep it on while opening throttle. Cleaned injector. Fuel pressure test is next. Messed with tps and no luck. Any help is appreciated!
@@manuelgunner100 that can be tough to find. I would try connecting a yamaha t GYTR tuner on it and check the values of the sensors and check for trouble codes. I did see a bike like that run about like that due to a bad map sensor. That was a tough one to chase down though. GYTR tuner surely helped though
Oh yeah 5 psi is way too little. In my experience on them yz's its the fuel pump regulator that usually causes low pressure so be sure to replace that as well
I’m having a hard time starting my bike I already did a pump rebuild but I seen that when I kick it over it does throw gas like it should but if I leave it sitting it start leaking gas without even kicking it I have a 2014 yz450f
They should not leak when the pump is not running. When it leaks that usually tells me something is not right with the pump. Most likely a o ring out of place or a leak somewhere. It most likely will leak or bleed the pressure off. If you do a pressure test it probably will fail. I was disassemble the pump and double check everything
@@damnbikerw5043 Ok. Unfortunately I don't have a YZ here right now that I can put a video together on that right now. Is this something you are needing to do ASAP?
not a huge hurry but fairly soon. I’m needing to do a top end on my 17 yz450f. I know I don’t have to disconnect the tank, I can just turn it around and strap it down to the sub frame. I guess that’s what I will do for now. But if you could remember to maybe add that part in to your next YZ video, I would appreciate it.
@@damnbikerw5043 Yes sir. There is a little black plastic thing that goes around it that you need to remove first, then slide the cover up. Then press in the two tabs. On the next video I will surely cover that in better detail. Thanks for the suggestion ☝
Washed my bike yesterday nothing new or out of the ordinary. No pressure washer or anything I never blast water into where it shouldn’t go. Was in washing it I heard the buzzing from the fuel pump randomly kick on for a second. Nowhere was I near the start button. Started it after I washed it and took a while but finally turned over. Let it sit for a couple hours and now nothing. Fuel pump won’t even turn on and make that buzzing noise which leads me to believe it’s fuel pump. Turns over fine but no spark either. You think it’s fuel pump? Watched your other video and saw you only replaced the injector. Any thoughts?
Right off the top of my head, I'm guessing your PCM (some call the CDI) went bad. No spark and no fuel pump action but was acting funny turning stuff on on its own before going dead. I'm guessing PCM. I have seen these PCM's do strange things when they go bad. Example on one bike it would never shut the fuel pump off after shutting the bike off, it was a bad PCM. But of course before buying a new PCM I would check as much as you can. First check the fuse on the starter solenoid/relay. Maybe try diconnecting the PCM and checking terminal is clean then reconnect. If you know someone with a bike like your ask to try their PCM on your bike. Its advised to always check the whole harness before just buying a new PCM but that can be so time consuming.
My outlet of the fuel pump(where i connect my fuel hose) leaks fuel when i take the fuel hose off , i heard it takes pressure out of your system and could be the cause to my fuel injector not spraying when i kick it from lack of pressure, any idea what i should replace or do apparently its not suppost to leak when u take the fuel line off of the fuel pump outlet
Hello. If the outlet of the pump keeps dripping fuel when disconnected, every time I have seen that the pump was not good. I would take the pump apart and check all the seals, and fuel pressure regulator and stuff. I have seen the yz fuel regulator go out more often then others. Which a good pump it should build enough pressure in the fuel line after being reconnected to start up within 5 to 7 good kicks
I got a 2017 yz450f and it just had a full rebuild it’s got good compression valves are in spec but I have a problem where it will Boggs out and shuts off after it’s gets warm then won’t start no matter how much I kick it but once it cools off it will fire up and do then same thing all over again do you think it could be the. Fuel pump
Could be a fuel pump or a stator. Both are easy to check. Get her hot till she shuts off. Hook a pressure gauge to the fuel pump and kick to check the pump for pressure. While having gthe tank up pull the spark plug and ground it on the frame, kick and check for good spark.
Black smoke is richness. Could be normal if its just a little. If its a lot then I would look into things. 4 kicks when cold on that bike is about normal.
I took my Gas tank off today and noticed a little bit of gas leaking from the fuel pump nipple that connects to the hose is that normal ? It was not leaking alot more like a dribble here and there if I tilt it it would leak more
@@latiajuana2953 usually when they keep dribbling while disconnected I find the pump is bad. Either regulator in the pump housing or a leak somewhere in there. I would dig in and repair the fuel pump assembly. Either just buy a new OEM complete one of buy a pump kit and also be sure to replace the regulator thats on the pump housing.
If the fuel pump is the issue, would it still run ok after getting it started even if it takes like 10 kicks to get it started? I wonder this because of how fast it would lose pressure in the beginning of the video with the bad pump as opposed to the end of the video with the good pump. I have a 2014 yz250f and usually had trouble getting it started, but once it was on it would run fine and it was also pretty easy to start when it was warm. Just recently however it started failing me even while running, it would start to bog and lose power and would occasionally pop as well. My buddies and I think it might be bad gas or dirty connectors or dirty injector something like that. I haven’t taken it apart yet but am thinking about doing it soon so any advice is greatly appreciated. Also thanks for the video man, very thorough and detailed!
Thanks man! Totally sounds like a fuel pump thats failing. I have a bike here right now with the same issues. First was hard to start cold. Then started bogging and popping and getting worse and worse. Checking the pump and it drops pressure fast and with power ran to it, it varies pressure consistently, not holding steady. I'm replacing the pumps motor and also the fuel pressure regulator. That should fix her up. If you don't buy a oem pump assembly then I do suggest a fuel pressure regulator and a fuel pump motor rebuild like like all balls or quantum
@@UpAllNight91 Appreciate your reply! Yea I’ll definitely order the fuel pump rebuild kit like the one in the video, thanks again for the videos and your help man!
@@Rkmmm751 yes sir. Also pick up a new fuel pressure regulator. Its on the fuel pump assembly. Change that out too. They can be found on ebay for like 20 bucks. Often when the pump goes bad from sitting the fuel pressure regulator gets all wonky too .
Question: Is it normal for it to be leaking fuel when you pull off the fuel line clip? The nipple the comes out from the fuel pump to the fuel line started leaking gas as soon as it pulled off the fuel line and it doesn’t stop Edit: I rebuilt the pump with the Quantum kit and it fires right up now! Everything seems to be working fine now. I did notice however that the nipple I recently mentioned still leaks with the new rebuilt pump. The only issue I noticed is that when I start the bike up I start it with the choke pulled out, and when I push it back in so that it goes back to a regular idle it shuts off right away. Any advice for this? Anything is appreciated, thanks again!
My 2010 starts fine but will only run for 2-5 minutes then dies starts right back up one kick and when over 1/2 throttle it bogs out and dies is it my fuel pump cutting out?
@@UpAllNight91 it has a new plug . I just barely had it fully serviced the day before I took it out and it ran fine for an hour maybe two and I wasn’t even riding it that hard then it just randomly started
@@randypeterson9468 has this new plug been added after the issue started or was it before the issue started? Plugs can act up when the inside cracks, doesn't matter if its old or not. If the plug was changed before the issue started I would try a new plug first just to be safe.
@@UpAllNight91 after new plug. It has about 2 hour, I rode about 6-8 miles then started going up the canyon road and it just started bogging and cutting out and dying but would instantly fire back up and ride for about 200 yard and die again
Just installed a quantum rebuild kit on my 2014 yz250f. Pressure if just over 50, but it drops off instantly. While trying to research the problem, I start reading all these reviews on quantum about danger fuel leaking down and I should avoid these pump kits. Now that I’m into this thing for about $80, what should I do now and do you know about this. What are my options
I would take it back apart and find where it is either leaking pressure by or if the motor itself is allow fuel to flow backwards when its off, which will allow the pressure to drop. Its very common for people to make a small mistake when putting these kits in so I would surely run back through it and check everything out
@@UpAllNight91 thanks for your reply. I was asking for my friend and sure enough after talking it apart, he found an o-ring that was cut. So yes, small mistake bad outcome.. ha. Thanks again
Hello. It really depends. Some people get it right some don't. They can be tricky. But if you are mechanically inclined and pay attention to detail you should be ok
Great video. I have a 2017 yz250f in otherwise great shape, (no e-start, about 60hrs on it) but it always takes two or three kicks to start. Any ideas what I should check?
A kick start bike can often take 2 to 3 kicks. My 2015 yz450 is in great shape and she's like that. Sometimes I can get lucky with a single kick start and I often feel it on the kicker knowing its gonna be a good one. But 2 to 3 is kinda normal. Remember no battery, so your single kick is spinning at stator which is making power, power is needed to turn on the ECU and fuel pump needs power and needs to prime up fuel pressure. Sometimes all that doesn't get there in time on the first kick
No, not normal. Usually indicates it has a bad or misplaced rubber o-ring in the pump assembly. I would open it back up and make sure all the o-rings are in place and sealing well.
Did you ever figure your out? I installed quantum kit. Have tried the quantum and factory o rings etc. And everytime I put pump back in and flip tank over fuel starts coming out the outlet. Torn pump apart about 6 times trying different combos of O rings. Have great fuel pressure though.
How do you know if the pump is bad? I have a 2015 factory bike from my buddy that rode for bto. engine is built so it’s already harder to start but it’s been sitting for alittle while now since his last race was Loretta’s with it in about 2016 says he rode it from time to time but it won’t start
I'm in the tampa bay area. I would start by draining all the old gas and putting fresh gas in. Then run 12 volts to the pump and do a pressure test. If alls well then connect the fuel line and give her a test fire, if not then rebuild or replace the pump. Next. If she doesn't fire she may also need a new fuel Injector . Been down that road myself. Thats how it went
@@glennrichard8110 sure. I haven seen any emails. Try shooting me a email again. Of course I'm sure you know there is no power right now but by next week I should be back up to speed
@@UpAllNight91 I have a very similar issue on a 2010 yz450f where it will sometimes take many kicks to start but only when hot. Could it be a fuel pump issue? I am replacing a fuel pump on a 2019 raptor 700 with a quantum kit and wanted to see if I should order both.
I have a 2014 rmz 450 that don't start everything in engine & valves are in spec I check the fuel pump pressure & is on point but the pressure drops when I disconnect the fuel pump from a battery do I need to replace the entire fuel pump or can I do same thing you did in the video?
Yes the kit should fix the fuel pressure drop. However just for a test I would remove the spark plug, check for spark, then put some fuel directly down the spark plug hole and install the plug and see if she will bark off for a second. That would let me know that everything is ok for her to run she just needs fuel
@@UpAllNight91 I check the spark & is there put gas in the engine like you said & engine run for a second but I don't get why I have the spec psi on the fuel pump but drop quick when disconnect from the battery
Ok well thats good, it wants to run. It needs to hold pressure in between kicks, if it drops pressure when you disconnect the power it will also drop pressure between kicks. So I would rebuild or replace the pump and it should be ok
