High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) was the official name given to the new light weight 4 wheel drive vehicle that the US military wanted to be in service by the 90s. It was meant to carry 4 to 5 personnel and light weight cargo. After almost a decade in the development, AM General's HMMWV got first deployed in the combat in 1991. The abbreviation soon got coined into an easier name - Humvee.
Thanks to the Gulf War in which 100s of HMMWVs in multiple variations got widely featured in the wartime news across media, and to Arnold Schwarzenegger who chose it for his own daily drive, the Humvee became an icon. It won hearts of the patriotic people in the US. Humvees represented the US military and it's might. Registering the love of the mass for the Humvees, a civilian version was launched by 1992. It was named the Hummer. And when General Motors acquired the marketing rights of the vehicle, it named the vehicle H1.
