ok...i'm gonna cuss....that impressed the shit out of me....It's amazing, to me, that the wings held up to all that "in your face" and up close flying and turning and banking and looping. Absolutely a gorgeous plane! I love the color scheme! The pilots skills were paramount! It was just amazing and entertaining that he was turning and looping and rolling so close to stage center. What a cool flight video, Pete! Thanks heaps for sharing this!!!

LMA Rules in The Uk is any model over 20kg must have 2 Rx's with half of the model on 1 and half on the other. i went for 2x spektrum 12 channel power safe rx's for total redundancy. this meant i could have two lipos on each rx.

Very nice glider, but why the fuck are you doing acrobatics with it when glider are meant to fly within thermals and up-lift winds? Do it without an engine, show us if you have the same skills as flying a motorized airplane. Go on, fly low upside down.
@keegansponholz9260
@keegansponholz9260 7 лет назад
Mick Carson what do you have against a glider doing aerobatics? It's not uncommon for full scale holders to do acro. Look at some of Luca Bertossio or other jet glider aerobatics videos. They do pretty much the same things things. This pilot is also very accomplished to be flying anything that well, no need to fly a different type for the sake of proving yourself if you can throw a glider around this well.

Keegan Sponholz I'd better not argue with you as you don't understand what I am talking about, just as you dont understand the term 'glider'. Glider means to glide, whether it is motorized or not. I have them too, both acrobatic and standard flight and I treat them as gliders, not planes. If an aircraft, whether a toy or real, is called a glider, then it's a glider. But if it is being flown with an engine, then it is not a glider, it's a motorised airplane. It's only a glider if it flies by means of thermal airlift but has a motor (electric or piston) for take-off purpose only, the rest of the flight is by thermal uplift. That is what glider means and not something that flies with the help of an engine from take-off and landing. That is not a glider, even it it has the shape and looks of a glider. The term 'glider', I mean the definition of the word, is to glide. Otherwise this is only a glider if it flies without applied power. Even my acrobatic glider can do most stunts on a mountain top, hill or high cliff where there is uplift without any power. Thats why some new gliders, hobby or not, have props to help take-off and then turn the motors off and fly into thermal air. And, gliders cannot be flown rough either. They are designed to glide, if you don't understand what the word 'glide' means, and to use gliders as an airplane makes one shake heads as to how can a motorized aircraft be a glider when it doesn't glide at all, when it is powered from start to finish? Something is happening with English speaking society. They use words and names that make no sense whatsoever. It seems like the English language is going to the dogs with so many ignorant illiterates on this planet. An aircraft that flies like a plane is a glider? Really? A toy that has two wheels on each side and is called hoverboard? Really, a hoverboard? First it doesn't hover and secondly it isn't a board either, but the illiterate imbeciles, for lack of proper education and the inability to think clearly because of the fucking drugs they take have damaged their brain cells, they call things that are neither hovering nor boards because the brain dead nutters have no idea what 'hover' and 'board' means, how does it hover when it runs on wheels, how is it a board, as well? And then there are other words that the ignorant, low IQ illiterates have turned into names and everything that flies now has that word/name, 'drone'. How is it that almost all Quadcopters, Multirotors and models, pilotless military aircrafts, rockets, bullshit male stingless bees, people who live on the labor of others and other nonsense be a drone? I mean, in the last 4 years almost everything, from hobby to military aircrafts and planes, radio controlled flying gadgets, insects and people - suddenly are drones when in reality the definition of drone is nothing more than a word that means a continuous loud sound and has always been used in a sentence or conversation to indicate, describe or point out a certain continuous and annoying sound, e.g. 'That jackhammer is so annoyingly loud, its droning (drowning) our conversation. Let's move somewhere quieter'. That's all the 'drone' word has been used for in a sentence, and not to name anything. It's a word, not a name or machine, but the low IQ, illiterate imbeciles now think it's suddenly a name, a machine a plane... WTF really? I'd say people are so stupid these days that, under the influence of illicit drugs and toxic alcohol, they no longer can recognize what is right or wrong. And in the next 20 years the language, and the people speaking it will certainly be gone to the dogs, as with everything else. And I hate to see it coming.

Okay then... I can see where you're coming from, and I misinterpreted your previous statement. I understand that you are somehow displeased by the way that this pilot was performing "glider" (in quotes for your sake, not mine) aerobatics while powered. Apparently (according to your previous, 2nd, comment) to be a "glider" the aircraft MUST remain unpowered for the duration of which the craft can be referred to as a glider. Alright then... let's argue semantics. Discarding your statements not relevant to the conversation at hand (if you'd like to discuss hoverboards and drones I think you'll find we have quite the same viewpoint) we get down to the essence of a glider. Yes, a glider, to earn its name must 'glide,' in this case meaning unpowered flight (Merriam-Webster.) However, in the case of modified aircraft, they do not loose their original type designation as modifications are added (major airframe changes not withstanding) so the aircraft in question here will still be called a glider. Yes, it fits the criteria of an airplane, but that doesn't let people know what it really is, so in order to adequately describe the aircraft 'jet' is joined to the type glider. This lets people know that the aircraft in question is not just some turbine powered airplane, but is a modified turbine powered sailplane. Hence, jet glider is born. The OP or pilot never claimed the aircraft to be a "glider," they only call it a "jet glider." What's wrong with calling it a jet glider? It's simply a turbine powered motor glider. Correct me if I'm wrong, but from my point of view it appears that your issue with the pilot is that he is not demonstrating the skill you wish to see with a "pure" glider and is somehow in the wrong for flying this aircraft in the manner that he does. If this is the case, why take a jab at the pilot's skill? He's obviously very good at what he does. The maneuvers are very smooth, the aircraft does not lose any considerable altitude during rolling maneuvers (a sign on excellent coordination,) and has earned himself a sponsorship. So, why hate on him just because he's not flying EXACTLY the way that you want him to (i.e. power off, only using thermals.) What's wrong with enjoying a pilot's skill in their own craft? Additionally, you make many false claims in your response to my original comment, stating that a glider with an engine of any sort is a "motorized airplane." This is simply not the case. A glider with this equipment is often referred to as a motor glider or self launcher, but never as an airplane. The two categories require VERY different skill sets to fly and in most countries require two different licenses. You also claim that gliders cannot be flown rough. I'm pretty sure this means to maneuver quickly (going off of context here) in which case you are also wrong. You can REALLY throw a lot of gliders around. Check out some of the slope soaring aerobatic models such as the "Le Fisch" or even the full scale Fox that Luca Bertossio flies. You'll find that you can really get these aircraft to crank, and do some things I'd be hesitant to try in any powered airplane. Lastly, there is a certain practicality and cool factor that comes with sticking a jet engine on top of a glider such as this. For obvious reasons, most RC events will not be held at a mountain top for practicality purposes. Besides, what's more of a draw, glider aerobatics, or a glider with a FREAKING JET STRAPPED TO IT! JET GLIDER BABY! WOOOOOOOOOO! In closing. I understand your position, but it's unfounded, and your slippery slope argument mixed with a pretty decent dose of ad hoc at the start really made this reply fun to write. I do have to agree with you that it's a shame how much the word "drone" gets thrown around. It's extremely irritating when I'm out flying either my DLGs or 3D aircraft and I hear somebody say "cool drone." I'm pretty sure I've come close to having an aneurysm because of the stupidity in that phrase. Good day, Keegan Sponholz, AMA 1048754, Private pilot

Keegan Sponholz like i said, I'd better not argue over the use of the word 'glider' on anything that flies and is not a glider. As an ex English interpreter/translator and having studied English and 4 other language for 7 years to become a translator, I honestly believe the language is not being used sensibly. In this case, the use of word that are totally irrelevant to the meaning and terms of certain subjects that do not make sense. Let's go back a few years where before glider were powered with foldable propeller and needed another propelled aircraft to launch them into the air, these were simply called gliders because their means of flight was to glide into the warm air or uplift thermals and return to land without motors. That's the reason these long winged and light powerless aircrafts were called gliders and have done so ever since. But when model gliders arrived in the 70's with the advent of a radio controlling system, gliders became a mainstay in the hobby and they were improved and more refined with size and designs. Later in the 70's, pilots learned how to do acrobatic stunts with Gliders, much like motorized model aircraft could do but there was a disadvantage. The glider's wings were too long for stunts of every possible move. So, a short winged model was invented, not necessarily invented because pretty soon others followed the idea of clipping their glider's wings and fly through trial and errors but they found that the models performed stunts on hills, ridges and cliffs better and just about an the same speed as this jet powered 'glider'. Nobody had thought from those days upwards, towards the present days to put a means of power by adding a gas engine to launch it in the air from the ground because if that was done so then it no onger is a glider. So, everybody in those days either used a bungee line to lift off or threw the glider off a slope or cliff face and every guy was happy with that. Some ordinary bungee lines had a small parachute that would open after the line separated grom the glider (aka sail-plane) and the wind would blow the parachute back near the radio control pilots. Others used a 4 stroke special bungee line retrieving spool so that once the aircraft had released itself from the line, the other line would pull that line back to the motor by means of clutch on the motor that would rewind back the whole line and stretching the bungee line as well, ready for next pilots to use. This was invented by Ralph Pollard, the then president of VARMS (Victorian Association of Radio Model Soaring). These days, due to different models, including Quadcopters and planes, the gliders almost lost popularity until the advent of better, powerful batteries and brushless motors that were already recognized as a new medium in flights without excessive weight that some gliders started to reappear with a front or saddle-back propeller. And because they were handy for hand launch (without the need of a bungee line) hobbyists realized that this is better than having to bring a bungee line on flat ground model flying. The benefit of this accepted new standard was that to get the glider airborne the prop would be started and the glider tossed by hand to give it airlift. Once a certain height was reached the prop would be switched off, some manually, others switched off by air pressure sensors. And this was okay. However, for the acrobatic gliders, owners had always used ridges and cliffs or mountain sides for lift because of their short wing span they cannot remain in the air long on flat ground. But they were still referred as gliders by the fact that once these are launched from a slope or cliff face, they would remain in-flight for as long as the batteries on the aircraft would last. But to fly an acrobatic aircraft at ground lever with the help on an engine, jet or not, the aircraft no longer is a glider regardless of having the look of a glider body or having wings longer than a standard airplane. A glider is called a glider for a recognized reason, and that reason is because 90% of its flight is to glide in a soaring stance with air thermals. The 10% is when it is launched either by bungee line or with an electric prop in front or on saddle-back of the aircraft. The aircraft you call glider on the video didn't glide one bit. It behaves more like a propelled aircraft with longer wings than a true glider, it doesnt matter where the motor, jet, or propellers are, front, back, or on top. I will also remind you the definition of 'glider', to glide in flight without applied power... www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glider_(aircraft)&ved=0ahUKEwiA29yT7IDXAhWGy7wKHbPzBQwQFggcMAA&usg=AOvVaw0fMte0MRwI2bctYjGovBby

Mick Carson you can believe that the language is not being used sensibly, but that says to me that you do not understand nuance. If language didn't evolve we'd all be talking like Shakespeare's characters. People have taken to calling these aircraft jet gliders being that they are based on glider platforms and have the addition of a jet engine. This does not mean that they can't glide, and would meet your criteria for a glider if flown in such a manner where the turbine was deactivated upon reaching altitude. Let's use this as an example of aircraft classification. I can take my Cessna 152 up to altitude, find a thermal, and then shut the engine off. That doesn't make it a glider. It is gliding, but the aircraft is not a glider. The intended purpose of the aircraft is what dictates it's classification. Not the manner in which it's flown. The primary airframe in this video is that of a glider, and as such it can be referenced to as one. Your time learning language, while I'm sure helpful in that field, does not make you a source in classifying aircraft. I will defer you to the FAA for any more classification questions. I hope you are able to pull yourself out of your delusional mind set wherein language dictates the purpose of aircraft.
