Hey guys, Cassie's editor Mike here. This video should have been edited and posted Friday before last, but I got laid out with an awful flu for nearly two weeks. Nothing to do with Cassie or Carly, they've already recorded Return of the King. So sorry for the long wait! Part two will be up tomorrow and then Return of the King bright and early in the New Year. Hope everyone had a better Christmas than I did!

This is also because of what happens to Arda every single time Maiar and Valar and together with their Vanyarin elves that they literally end up destroying the earth itself in a deep way just as collateral damage. You know, its quite sad that the movie didn't feature Sam's actual gift from the books - the box of soil taken from the elven forest with a single acorn from their most sacred tree. Sam being fiercely protective of it is a feature in the books, and eventually pays off. The rope is cool and all. but that wasn't really her gift - it was a practical piece of equipment that she knew they'd need. The soil and acorn is, by itself, a seemingly worthless gift (like the strands of hair given to Gimli) that hold a lot more cultural significance.

TOTALLY AGREE! I love these movies, and I know that they needed to cut some things out to actually make them happen (either that, or make a dozen movies...and probably still leave things out). But that is one of the only cut things that was really upsetting to me. That box, and his actions in regards to it, was such an integral part of Sam's character, and a whole other layer of character development that they totally missed out on.

It's the only healthy way to consider The Ring: It's too powerful and corrupting for ANY BEING to have, thus must be destroyed. I was struck the other day, watching Return of The King, how the entire scene of getting to the precipice of Mt Doom to toss The Ring to it's destruction, only to be enticed to claim it at the very last moment...It would be a great side story to recount how many times the walls of that chamber have seen that exact scene play out over history. We know it's happened at least twice, Frodo and Isildur, so it's probably happened a bunch more times over thousands of years. It would be fascinating to see how many times The Ring was one small action away from destruction, only to go on from there to destroy the life of it's claimant.
@jordinagel1184
@jordinagel1184 Год назад
@@RobertMorganwell, we know that didn’t happen again, so sadly that theory doesn’t pan out. Isildur lost the Ring in the Anduin when he died, until it was found by Gollum, who then lost it to Bilbo, and we know the rest of the story. Unless someone found the Ring in the middle of the Anduin, brought it to Mt Doom, succumbed to its power, and left (all without being noticed), and then proceeded to lose it in the Anduin AGAIN, it’s impossible that someone else found themselves in the same scenario as Isildur and Frodo. Carly and Cassie ask, "How can Saruman who once was good be like the most evil...?" The answer isn't explicitly stated in the movie, but it is in the book: it's the Palantir. Peter Jackson & Co. reveal the Palantir, the Seeing Stone of Numenor, early in FOTR, but in the book we don't see it till near the end of T2T. Then Gandalf says, "Further and further abroad he gazed, until he cast his gaze upon Barad-dur. Then he was caught!...Easy it is now to guess how quickly the roving eye of Saruman was trapped and held, and how ever since he has been persuaded from afar, and daunted when persuasion would not serve. The biter bit, the hawk under the eagle's foot, the spider in a steel web!"

@bellethilrancthalion1109
@bellethilrancthalion1109 Год назад
Yeah. The Palantiri originally were not evil, but a gift between the Elves of Valinor and the Men of Numenor as a method of communication, since men were not permitted to cross the waters to the undying lands. When they were brought to Middle Earth with Elendil and his descendants after the fall of Númenor, the one that was stationed in Osgiliath was captured and fell into Sauron’s hands, while others went missing. That is what made the use of them so dangerous, as you don’t know who else is watching. Like a hacker in a video call.

The closest approximation of Gandalf's physical age is 24,000 years old according to Gandalf himself. Yet various dates of key events in other Tolkien texts show that Gandalf has actually only walked in his physical form for over 15,000 years (following his quote "300 lives of men, I have walked this earth"), It says that Gandalf was the wisest of the Maiar. Many Maiar were considered really great and powerful. This movie is full of things to remember. Especially after reading and watching in depth videos and discussions about Tolkien and the lore etc. it’s vast and wonderful.
@bellethilrancthalion1109
@bellethilrancthalion1109 Год назад
Interesting that it says that Gandalf was the wisest of the Maiar. Of the Istari (wizards) I can understand, as there were only five, and Gandalf is definitely the wisest of them. There are just so many Maia, and so little is known about them all. But it makes sense, as Gandalf was a servant of the Valier Nienna, whose gifts were wisdom and understanding. That would make him the greatest of her servants, at the very least. Sauron was a servant of Aulë, who was the father of the dwarves and good at making things. Saruman was, I think, a servant of Manwë, who was king of all the Valar. I don’t remember where I was going with this nerdy rant xD have a nice day!

Sauron can't make the palantíri lie, but he _can_ control what part of reality you see in it. Denethor, Boromir and Faramir's father, also has a palantír and Sauron has similarly been trying to corrupt him. Actor Andy Serkis played Gollum, not just his voice, but also being there on set with the other actors, while wearing a white lycra motion-capture suit with a stretchy white hood that only showed his face (the 'gimp suit', as they jokingly called it). Andy's body actions and facial expressions were captured by special cameras and digitally read into the computer, and this informed the CGI software as how to render the facial and body movements of Gollum. Andy worked out Gollum's voice after seeing his cat at home coughing up fur balls. Not only the sound, but the full-body spasming motion from the tail to the head, all went into making the distinctive sound that became Sméagol's more well-known nickname _(gollum, gollum)._ Doing this voice on a daily basis eventually took a toll and made his throat pretty raw, so that Andy went about carrying a honey-lemon-ginger concoction he'd made, known affectionately as 'Gollum juice'.

This knowledge I give will help make sense of the future movies ahead. Gandalf is Maia (Spirit) named Olórin created by Eru’s Thought (extensions of Eru Îlluvatar himself whilst they had their own free will and individuality. He essentially got the chance to experience and study other parts of himself through this.) among the other Ainur before the Years of the Lamps roughly 9,000+ years before arriving in Middle-earth; In Valinor he was known as Olórin.(Remember though he formally existed before the world existed and his form becoming Gandalf hadn’t happened yet. He was sent to Middle-earth in human form around the year 1000 of the Third Age. So his many forms had different ages in length of existing. He’s very cool right! Could he get any cooler!? 😎❤️ Another thing is when he arrived in middle earth he was disguised as an elf and lived among them whilst they were unknowing and he became to be known as Mithrandir to the Quendi/Eldar❤️ However, there is a much longer answer. Like Sauron(former name is Mairon) and the other Istari (the order sent around the same time and of which he was appointed leader but he being who he is and a student of the Vala by the name Nienna and Lorien(Irmo). Gandalf was a Maiar, an angelic spirit created by Eru at the beginning of time and therefor one of the many Ainur who sang the world into being and Eru just helped their creation take shape and basically stated “behold YOUR creation” and basically what happens in that world goes sort of preordained as by that song eons ago so really only the ages after Dagor Dagorath will truly be an age that isn’t full of strife and sadness and longing. Also. These lamps are what were before even the two trees. These were Giant mountains but also like light houses but housing a great power but it may have also been where two special Maia lived that helped in the creation in the sun and moon after Melkor With eldrich terror Ungoliant killed the trees, so yea Arien is the Maia who basically exists with the sun and her brother and or lover of sorts is the one who wanders with and guides the moon.

Aragorn was able to resist the temptation of the Ring, but what if he had to fight and kill Boromir to protect Frodo. He was ready to on that snow covered mountain. And once Boromir was out of the picture, who would have been the Ring's next target? Legolas? Gimli? Aragorn would have to fight them. Frodo wanted to go on his own so his friends wouldn't have to fight themselves over him. Sam, hands down, had the strongest will against the Ring.

The reason Aragorn held Frodo back from helping Gandalf is because there were orc archers firing at them from the other side. You can see some of the arrows whizz past if you look.

Tolkien was a soldier in WW1 and that experience shaped his life and Lord of the Rings. In the book Gandalf says, "You cannot pass" to the Balrog. I think this comes from the most famous quote from the war when the French general at The Battle of Verdun in 1916 said something similar to his troops, who subsequently stopped the German advance. It was then put on propaganda posters as "They Shall Not Pass". Every soldier in that war had heard the saying.

Gandalf was older than middle earth, older than the first elves and dwarves. As old as Sauron, Melkor's lieutenant in the First Age. He was among the 4 Maia sent to Middle Earth at the beginning of the Third Age to monitor Sauron and to advise in their special areas of interest.

The stuff that the Uruk Hai poured into Merry's throat is Orc Drank which is a type of medicine that gives you energy, described in the book as it feels like it was burning inside you. Behind the scenes, it's a mix of Peach Ice Tea, Glycerin and Sodastream Cola concentrate. Dominic Monaghan described the feeling as "It couldn't be any more sticky, like liquid glue". The first take, his vomit was acting but the second take it was real consindering how disgusting that must have felt.

Happy New Year to you both and your loved ones ☺! Ah, I love those movies. I just binge-watched them on New Year's Eve with good food, tea, ale and a pipe with shire tobacco 🤗. Btw. Saruman, Gandalf and Sauron are actually "on the same" level or better said equally powerful. They are all Maia (like the second highest angel class) with the Ainu representing the supreme class of angels. All three use their power according to their proclivities, Saruman uses cunning, Gandalf uses empathy and Sauron ... well he went his path with Morgoth ...

Fun Fact concerning "Sauron" and "Saruman": The makers of the 1978 animated Lord of the Rings movie thought that they sound to similar and the audience will mix it up, so they changed "Saruman" to "Aruman".

Gandalf is not a human. He is a maiar, basically a lesser angel type being that serves good. The Balrog is also a maiar, but one that was corrupted and serves melkor. Sauron is also a maiar who served melkor originally. But gandalf is not just a human wizard like Dumbledore.

Let me explain this further! The Tower bit is explained ONLY in the Unfinished Tales Book: In [manuscript] C The Black Riders arrived at the Gate of Isengard while Gandalf was still a prisoner in the tower. In this account, Saruman, in fear and despair, and perceiving the full horror of service to Mordor, resolved suddenly to yield to Gandalf, and to beg for his pardon and help. Temporizing at the Gate, he admitted that he had Gandalf within, and said that he would go and try to discover what he knew; if that were unavailing, he would deliver Gandalf up to them. Then Saruman hastened to the summit of Orthanc - and found Gandalf gone. Away south against the setting moon he saw a great Eagle flying towards Edoras. See, the thing is he was always master of studying the enemy and even being able to think like they do to always know exactly the best ways to handle ever situation and so on, but the thing is he didn't just become the enemy, he at this time in a sense for once actually grew afraid of him, probably Sauron did what Sauron did with Finrod Felagund(Galadriel’s elder brother who by the way was very important in the legendarium) which basically widdled Saruman with various visions of the past and future until it wore him down.

Fun Fact: If you watched most of the appendices on the DVDs, that is. The scene where the crew shot Viggo Mortensen and his companions against the rising sun turned into an overnight cookout at his urging; where word of mouth brought other actors and even stunt doubles to join the party. The filmmakers got little sleep, so to catch that amazing moment.

Here is what Èowyn sings at Thèodred’s “funeral”•Now dear Théodred lies in darkness, most loyal of fighters. The sound of the harp shall not wake the warrior; nor shall the man hold a golden wine-cup, nor good hawk swing through the hall, nor the swift horse stamp in the courtyard. An evil death has set forth the noble warrior A song shall sing the sorrowing minstrels of Meduseld That noble cousin, who always held me dear Now is held in darkness, enclosed. (Now in in the language of the Èitheod)❤ Nú on théostrum licgeth Théodred se léofa hæ´letha holdost. ne sceal hearpan sweg wigend weccean; ne winfæ´t gylden guma sceal healdan, ne god hafoc geond sæ´l swingan, ne se swifta mearh burhstede beatan. Bealocwealm hafað fréone frecan forth onsended giedd sculon singan gléomenn sorgiende on Meduselde thæt he ma no wære his dryhtne dyrest and maga deorost. She sings this part in the movie: Bealocwealm hafað fréone frecan forth onsended giedd sculon singan gléomenn sorgiende on Meduselde thæt he ma no wære his dryhtne dyrest and maga deorost. Éowyn is only heard singing the last four lines of the song, ending with the word Bealo, which in Old English meant "evil" or "harm". The first of those lines ("Bealocwealm hafað...") originates from the epic poem Beowulf, line 2265.)

Saruman is referred to as 'Saruman the White' and did wear white robes, but in the novel later on instead appear to be "woven from all colours and shimmered and changed hue so that the eye was bewildered" and he named himself 'Saruman of Many Colours. It’s a sign I believe that he has embraced moral relativism and no longer embraces clear values as he used to.

Concerning the question whether Gollum was CGI: It actually was a combination of CGI and motion capture. So all the movements in the scenes where done by the actor Andy Serkis (who did also the voice acting) and then they laid that scary texture of Gollum over it. Serkis has made quite a profession of it, starring in the same manner as Baloo in the jungle book remake Mowgli: legend of the jungle as well as portraying Supreme Leader Snoke in the finale Star wars trilogy.

For those who keep asking why no one ran back to save Gandalf before he fell down with the Balrog in the movie, there are two things that you should take notice of. The first is how far away they all are from Gandalf at the time Gandalf stops to confront the Balrog. None of the members of the fellowship are near, it is a significant distance they would need to run back. None could've made it Gandalf before he let go and fell. The second is the orcs on the other side of the now destroyed bridge. When Aragorn finally moves to flee with the rest, you can see orc arrows narrowly missing him and hitting the rock wall next to him. Had anyone tried to run back to get Gandalf, they would have been filled with orc arrows.

What you may not know about Gandalf -- indeed all the "wizards" in the Tolkien universe -- is that they are far more than old men in silly hats with conjuring power. They are, in fact, demigods known as Maiar, who are manifesting with the appearance of wizened old men merely for human's benefit. They are vastly powerful. Sauron is himself a "fallen" Maiar. So, I'd say DD would have a hard time competing with that.
