Cloak Highest form? No, this is monotonous. IMHO, there is MUCH better stuff (with actual melodies, cool chord changes, and harmonic structure) out there: Snarky Puppy, Hiromi, Simon Phillips' Protocol, Greg Howe, Chris Potter, Spock's Beard, Frost*, Dirty Loops, etc., not to mention the music of Liszt, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, etc. Different genre, I know, but brilliant technically, musically, and conceptually. Donny and co. are skilled musicians, but this tune doesn't go anywhere.
Incredible chemistry in the whole band, trippy Jason Lindner intro and layers, insane Donny McCaslin solo and Nate Wood/Mark Guiliana so tight, its' like they are one mind w/ 2 bodies.
I went tp see this group at the Village Vanguard and was like...Nate Wood? I was kinda bummed. Then he played and him and Mark did magic and spent the rest of the night picking my jaw off the floor. It was one of the best musical experiences I have ever heard.
We live in a world, in which Nate wood, a genious drummer, plays bass because he is only the second best drummer in the band..... Nevertheless probs to Nate wood, a true musician
