Raise your hand if also think this is an underrated channel unlike the mainstreams that are either about exotic food or shocking the locals with their perfect Chinese. Just pure quality and unique content that's not filled with those VPN sponsors.
I cannot believe I only found this video now! I am born and raised in Qingtian and has lived in US for seven years. Watching the scenaries and listening to the accents in the video is just so nostalgic. Some of the things I would like to comment: 1. My grandmom used to live around the neighborhood shown in 2:34 (上店街). It is the oldest part of the town and was the town center 40 years ago. (And shame on me that I don't even know it's about to be demolished). 2. Yes, most of us have relatives/friends in China. But most of them are in EU not in US. 3. There are actually some local restaurants good for one person to have quick meal. I guess you didn't come across them because you are not in the busier side of the town. 4. Yes, the southern part of Zhejiang is just so mountainous. I think there is only one route that goes along the the river and you have to share the road with cars and trucks (very unfortunate for you). 5. Technically Qingtian (which is a 县county) is part of Lishui (which is a 市prefecture) LOL. 6. I think it's relevant to say that the government of Zhejiang Province do not access the performance of Lishui government based on economy, but rather based on the environments protection. This is actually quite unique and is a result of mountainous terrain.
Hello Katherine! I encountered one of your videos several weeks ago. And I especially like your Zhejiang series, because it's my home province, but I emigrated at the age of five to Austria (and ever since live here). So I was curious if you will cycle through Lishui City and Qingtian County (and yes it's my ancestral home). Today I was pleased to see this video. And you might curious about the cause of the great diaspora of Qingtianese People (about 300K living abroad and currently Qingtian County has a population of 570K). There are two main reasons: 1.) Searching for opportunities and realising them (which is also the main reason for any emigrants) 2.) The harsh natural environment, Qingtian County and also Lishui City is the most mountainous region in Zhejiang (Huangmaojian/黄茅尖 with 1930 m: The highest peak of Zhejiang is also situated in Longquan County within Lishui). This area consists of: 89,7% mountains, 5,3% water and only 5% arable Land. So it was difficult to make a living because of this harsh circumstances. But because of the great diaspora and their economic support in form of investments, Qingtian County is now among the richest regions in the whole of China. I also wanted to say: I was astonished to see trough your videos, that the people especially in Zhejiang have now a great awareness of environment protection. It was very common in China that people will destroy the environment for short term benefits, neglecting the long term effects that will be longlasting and consequently leads to various expenses. The ongoing efforts of the government and the people make me very proud as an Overseas Chinese with Zhejiang ancestry. 青山绿山就是金山银山! I think you and your company is doing a great job (I would also like to know, what kind of projects your company is currently doing). Therefore many thanks for sharing your videos. Thumbs up!
I want to thank you, Katherine so much for the videos and for doing great work for China and for the world! May you make one video talk about how overseas Chinese can contribute to your organization please ?
One thing I really like about China is the urban parks and squares, where older people gather regularly to sing, dance, and just chill with their friends. This part of Chinese culture is much less common anywhere in the world. What a great thing it is to provide the population with all these public parks, it makes their life quality much more fun, particularly for older people and young children.
Hi Catherine, I can’t believe what you are exploring, the ordinary people in the rural areas of China! So many RU-vidrs like recording the large city, like Shanghai and chongqing, thank you for sharing these to the world outside of China!
i was born in WenZhou, I left 20 years ago. Thanks for showing us my home town, I just think I got to go back and see it myself. by the way, you speak great Chinese
Thank you , Katherine, so much for this vlog. I live in Sweden and yes, a lot of the recent chinese immigrant are from Qiantian. I have quite a few Qingtian friends here in Stockholm. Italy and Spain are countries that has a high Qingtian population. Thanks again for sharing. Always a pleasure to watch your vlog. ❤
So nice that you have visited Qingtian. I'm living in Belgium and my parents have immigrated to here. In July I went on vacation in Qingtian to see my grand parents.
There’s a big Chinese community in my region (Veneto, northeastern Italy, Venice area) and the majority of them comes from 青田 Even though I speak mandarin I never had the chance to visit the city while I was in China but I’ve always been curious to see what it looks like, so thanks for showing this ! Hope you had a great time there
Many Chinese came to Italy. In Turin, Italy, my province city, there is a large community since the 90s and they mainly run activities such as clothing, supermarkets...Very interesting video and thank you very much.
@@kiwikemist you are right, there are many racists. Those ones who are not so racist are not really relaxed behaving normal because they know they are doing "overly kind" compared to others who are openly racists. Which means almost all of them are very racist inside, but will not admit it. They are very arrogant without being aware of it. They are brainwashed by their media but they will say that other people are brainwashed. They project everything to others in order to make themselves feel "clean" which they absolutely are not. Italy especially one of the worsts. A couple from America (you can check Mahnoor Euceph) after her bad experience with her Asian American boyfriend in North Italy(the part considered more developed than the rest) announced that Italy is 20 years behind compared to US on the matter of racism. But newspaper later protected racists(which are students, but even children can be, my friends met them) who treated them disrespectfully. But they will tell you not taking seriously because they are students/too young/just children/poor people/ignorant/with no culture + other 1000 excuses to calm you down so you don't stand up fighting against it, yes most of them choose to tolerate it and will teach you to let it be. This in Italy.
Katherine I admire your tenacity and strength focus in making these as well as the cycling with making documentaries..you have such a lovey and balanced view .. Much peace love and respect 🙏 ❤😊
Hi Katherine! My parents were originally from Qingtian and went to live in Belgium for a better living. But we still go back to Qingtian every year to visit other family members 😊 We’ll go back in 2 months
Nice videos, great Chinese speaking, young lady. Hope more and more people like you, from any country, help build bridges between cultures, then there will be peace around the world. Stay safe, happy, and healthy, and enjoy your journey in China. from a Chinese in Canada.
I'm a wenzhounese who was born and raised in Italy, and here literally 95%~of the people come from places such as Qingtian or neighboring counties or cities. Like Chinese people here often speak with each other in wenzhounese without asking from which part are they from because it's almost always wenzhou. Also I want to thank you for your wenzhou videos since I haven't been able to come back to visit wenzhou since I was like 5 so it's great seeing high quality videos showing my ancestral home since there are barely any on RU-vid, thank you!
What an interesting place! Your videos have inspired me to explore more of rural China and I am falling in love with it more and more while I visit family here. And you never fail to capture underrated humor everywhere :)
Fascinating series, cation.👍 Never travelled to this region and may have to add to the bucket list. Locals seem to live harmoniously and happily despite any hardship. The atmosphere is vibrant and full of life unlike where i live.😖 Enjoy the rest of your Zhejiang adventures and always looking forward to the next vlog.
Hi, I’m from Australia but lived in Beijing for 5 years and am going back as China is far better to live and work than Australia, can you tell me why one third of this cities people choose to live in Europe? Thanks
@@robbygroze5544 presumably like the rest of their compatriots who fled to the west seeking a better life. Some people still believe in the American dream.🙄🇺🇸 Perhaps due to the social support system/financial security. Except living conditions have improved drastically for the average citizen since China emerged as an economic powerhouse. The grass is always greener on the other side.
hey, i'm 17 and my whole family's from qingtian, and i'm the first generation to be living abroad! (i'm from france btw) i was just there in Qingtian last summer in july lol i was wondering if i could find videos about my parents' hometown just for fun and i came across your video, loved it, it's not so common to see videos about Qingtian plus yours is really well edited and all :)
Hi Katherine, love your videos. I'm learning so much about China. Please tighten the strap on your helmet, it's very loose and if you fall, the helmet won't be able to protect you as is. Have fun riding! :D
Thanks for sharing your journy. Never heard of Qingtian. It's nice to see that part of the country. Wish more busiensses follow the Lishui way of thinking. Treasure and protect enviroment the best we can for this and future generations.
He was spruiking the virtues of his business model. Not quite sure if he adheres to it though. But hey, why not if he can cash in on such pristine and beautiful scenery. At least he wasn't lying compared to the Matterhorn cigarettes advertisements.
Another inspiring video vlog to watch today.. Thank you Katherine for sharing with us your beautiful & educational journey in the other side of the podium.. Love It! ❤. Greeting from, Seattle Washington!
That "restaurant choice" moment hit home... I dunno how many times I ended up getting some noodles or fried rice because I didn't wanna sit in a big restaurant by myself (I mean yeah if I'm hungry I've done it though 😅)
You missed the most distinct and famous culture of 青田,that is 青田玉石(Jade) and its business, that's probably the whole reason why a third of the population migrated to Europe
I think I know why you love chickens. Because you're a Hokie (or at least you wear the Hokie gears from time to time in the videos). I'm a Chinese Hokie who lives in the U.S. Thank you very much for what you do and for what you share with the world here on RU-vid as well as via the other channels that I haven't visited. I pray for your journey. Be safe and be happy. GO HOKIES!
Yes...me too...I love chicken...especially those BBQ with my secret sauce 😁 Kath, that must be the 4th or 5th times you asked the locals whether they can recommend you a local husband 🤭 Anywhere, as always, enjoyed your videos and adventures though I still have not caught onto what you actually do for a living. Cheers, and here's to Red Stallion always being steady and reliable when you need it most. P/S; That Yuyue Soy Saurce was talking enthusiastically over the open top of that soya sauce jar which begs the question on how much saliva droplets fell into that jar 😁
@@kats_journey_east I would be interested to watch a tour of a typical workday which might be uninteresting to you because you are living that life, but which might be fascinating to those outside of your sphere. Cheers and keep on biking...and may red Stallion carry you steadily to wherever you go!
I visited soy sauce factory many years ago as part of my microbiology class on fermentation. It was like a small swimming pool. This is very different.
Always Christmas at 麦嘉基🤣 Oh yeah, dust from the road when heavy vehicles pass by are a nightmare.. Do consider getting one of those cycling scarf and goggles to prevent getting some of those dust in your face while riding. Especially the goggles. Nearly crash once when I got some dust into my eye during cycling.. Look forward to your next update and ride safe~👍
I’ve heard that Qintian is where you can find some very authentic European coffee shops, supposedly opened by those expats that have returned (or helped their local relatives to open one).
Obviously what you heard is incorrect. It would be good if the returning expatriates can served some original meals from whence they have resided instead of the mutated kind, McKentucky is not too good.
@ 1:38 the Chinese lady invites Katherine to join the singing. Here's a suggestion: Katherine can speak Mandarin, so she could learn a couple of Chinese songs that are known to older folks, so sometimes she could surprise them (and us) by singing with them.
Was a bit concern when those construction trucks passing by next to you. Stones or rubble coming off of a car tire travelling at high speed can destroy a car windshield. Good you made it out with just dust and dirt.
Haha, I know there's lot of "hidden" European restaurant there, if you spend more time there, you will see lot of westerners and commercial all around China coming there to buy western product. It's hard to find but there's a lot ! And all the European style building, you miss that too
Having only recently starting my youtube channel i really missed out by not filming when i lived in china for 18 months 😢 its a must for me to return next year 🎉
Qingtian! Happy that you visited. Havent finished video yet but my grandparents from dads side live in rural Qingtian, mothers side live in the city but grandma is originally from Ningbo. I was born and raised in Sweden and live in Stockholm. I have to say about 90% of the Chinese people Ive met here are from Qingtian, its crazy... and we joke about it in our family that all east asian restaurants in Stockholm are ran by Qingtian people, theres truth to it. About half the ramen places ive visited are ran by and staffed by people from Qingtian and for us, its not a good thing because we just cant get away from them LOL
great music.... Chicago? O I Must tell u Katherine, about espresso places, and authentic and mixed pasta, since all of chinese living in italy came from this town. but also visit龙泉,庆元 with gorgeous wooden bridges, bamboo buildings , sword museums, porcelain kilns, this route will take you to 福建。I worked in rural architecture in 遂昌,松阳。foodies would be so happy with a fish pot from creek, or mushroom banquette, and great stories. I take my architecture students from art academy in Hangzhou to visit all over the rural sites.
Thanks for the beautiful footage about the reality of China❤. I believe your understanding of China is more boarden and deep than most of Chinese local😂
