1/35th scale Vintage Tamiya Panther ausf. A Medium tank model kit build 

Very nice build of a vintage Tamiya Kit. I built one in the early 1980's. When I recently got back into modeling, I bought one of these on Ebay.

I recently acquired this kit via online and will be starting it pretty soon. your video gave me some good ideas for detailing mine. a couple of them, using pieces of wire for handles etc were something I've done in the past. also using mesh for exhaust vents. so thanks for the video.

More information than I ever needed to know about the Tamiya panther, but appreciated. I will be picking this up to add to my collection. Bravo!

Built that in 1979. Thought it was a hell of a step up from the old Monogram 1/32 Lee and Grant. Then a mate of mine got the Tamiya Tiger1. Hell, that even had black rubber hoses for the air filter gear on the back. I had built the motorised Leopard and Saladin when I was a little younger.

Great vid with tons of information. I have bought this kit for a number of the reasons you mentioned, I haven't built an armour model in over 40 years so I wanted a cheap kit to practise on before I build a more detailed (expensive) model. I am nearly ready for paint but I did notice two extra handles in the kit but not used in the instructions. After looking at old pictures I noticed the handle missing from the commanders hatch and one is the handle/step from the turret escape hatch so I drilled small holes and inserted them. I also filled the sponsons? with plasticard as I couldn't leave it so open. I bought a cheap tealeaf strainer from a shop (0.85p from Wilko's) and used the fine metal mesh to put inside the engine vents as they were also rather gaping. I have cut a hole through the bottom of the tank underneath the drivers hatch so that I can insert the driver figure after the tank is painted, I also wanted to have a go at painting figures but he won't fit through the hatch with his arms attached. The spare track links are very basic and plain so to give them a bit more detail I trimmed the teeth down a bit and glued them on the sides back to front, I know its not correct but it gives me some other detail to practise with. Overall I have really enjoyed making this kit, so much in fact that I may have to go buy another one to have a go at Winter camo.

Thanks for sharing this Oddball! For a mid seventies kit it still builds up into a great model, and they are such a nice break from complex builds.

Built this kit about 6 months ago with my 12-year-old son. The tracks were almost an inch shorter than needed. Tried to stretch them, no go, had to go with after-market resin tracks. That lesson learned I'm about to build another one using the photo of the destroyed Panther outside of the Cologne Cathedral in Germany, April 4th, 1945 as a guide.

Beautiful model. Great suggestion about the wire inside the barrel, never seen that before! Living proof that a great paint job/weathering makes a model, and not the age of the kit.

Very nice. A skilled builder can maker a simple kit like this more accurate than a perfect kit built by the average builder, love the paint, too many kits have too much weathering imo. kudos.

I’m building this kit currently. Not a great kit, but a great kit for $15. Custom made zimmerit, schurzen, periscopes, copper tow rope and fan covers for it. Yours is built better by far… but I’m only 13-14m into this hobby.

Good video. I just bought one and I’m making it as my first ever model! Now, I’m sure this was just a mistake but around 1 hour in when you’re talking about the MG34 on the roof you put the same clip in twice.

Yeah Oddball totally agree with your treatment and evaluation of this kit, it's really not a bad thing for the money! I'm getting back into it after 50 years and I bought a couple of them knowing what they were so I could just have fun building and modifying with out stressing about stuffing it up badly like you do on high end kits and I would recommend it to any modeler, even anal rivet counters, imagine the years of fun getting it right for them! Like a $20 blank canvas and hey any Panther is a good Panther after all. I have subscribed to see what else you've got to say. Cheers KEN

You did wonders for that kit. Does it have too few wheels also?I guess I got barrel warpage over time and forget the wire trick lol.

Recently acquired this kit (a second time cause I messed up the turret on the first one) and I plan on testing out soft-edge camo via brush (stippling, drybrushing, "feathering" the edges with the base color). Hopefully it works out, cause I want it to have that blended/faded look.

I love this kit, but the gaping hole bothers me so much. Why couldn't they add side skirts

You wouldn't happen to have any information on the Panther they copied from the APG, i.e. date and place of capture and it's location now? I've tried researching this myself but with little success.

How did you create and secure the sponsor to the underside of the skirt

Also with the Tamiya A ...the winch on back is wrong ..its not correctly placed or way around....needs rotating and fixed higher up

For anyone looking for to buy this kit it's an okay model to build but ultra fun when finished because it looks super good at the end of the process. If you want to buy it go for it.
