Nearly 1,700 People Live Underground In The Australian Desert, But Why? 🔷🔷🔷 Would you sleep underground in the middle of this desert? This is what nearly 1,700 people do every night. In the Australian desert-where temperatures reach almost 120°F (50°C) during the day and plummet to freezing cold levels at night-there are 1,762 people who live completely underground. But why?

I visited there in the 90s. All the houses I saw had above ground living space as well as underground. It's not too hot to live above ground most of the year and it cools down a lot at night. They also have an amazing underground hotel. The biggest problem there is frequent scares of water shortages.

I had a short solo-trip to Coober Pedy in 2014. Arrived at very early morning on 31 December after spent more than 8 hours rode on Greyhound from Adelaide. Stayed in Radeka Inn, owned by old Aystralian-French couple. It was amazing to have a chance to wander around the city and want to come there at least one more time, but honestly I can't imagine to reside there.

I love the rustic feel of the houses under ground, like the underground houses of shire in lord of the rings, but the corridors looks very lonely and a bit eerie though, like someone might jump from your back. I have a phobia on dark, tight corridors so living in this place might be a pass for me 😱

My ex wife was raised there and her home had 17 rooms in it all underground. You live there because the temp is about 21-22 deg C all year round while the temps in the summer run into the 60's. They started living there because it was the only way to beat the heat during the summer and it stayed warm in the winters. Quite a place.

When visiting Australia in 1980 we toured underground homes in the desert. They were bright and pleasant but homes were just comfortable; surprise: everything was enclosed in plastic to prevent dust from covering. Plastic flower bouquets, chairs, couches etc. They were a relief out of the heat and that is their pratical purpose. I also purchased a beautiful opal which unfortunitely was misplaced during our 40 day luxury coach trip. Just for info: the trip was once in a lifetime trip and while there climbed Ayres Rock and visited the caves around it's base- which I understand are now closed off for tourism.

@this7world7turns52

@Evelyne Lyn, Like so many other youtube keyboard jockeys, you have no idea what youre even talking about. It's completely moronic of you to think just because you slept there, this confirms you to know could walk right out the front door if there was a fire. You only think of the best case scenario instead of reality for how you dont always so simply walk out the door after youre wakened in the middle of night with smoke which already had a chance to accumulate before the alarm went off. Although the previous dimwit commenter was right on how rock doesn't burn, he neglected to use common sense how the other things brought into this place does burn and many of which put off toxic fumes. Go watch some documentaries of real life situations of escaping fires that would obviously show how you jump the gun to think you know more than what you actually do
