Every year North Devon Model Society hosts a "just for fun" competition with a provided figure or kit, this year we all built WW1 1/72 aircraft. This was my entry. www.vms-supplies.com www.northdevonmodelsociety.co.uk
Overall, I avoid any kits in 1/72 like the plague. There is a point where it just becomes too tedious for me and I don't enjoy it. I stick with 1/32 kits or larger, I even do a lot of 1/16 armor. For me, bigger is better. That said, that was a beautiful result you got from that kit.
💯 Your model looks beautiful! What's particularly impressive is how you've skillfully applied fundamental techniques to get the most out of a simple kit. The most fascinating aspect is that you've demonstrated it's not necessary to load a model with tons of aftermarket parts in our hobby. This is modeling at its finest-congratulations!
Thanks Patrick, I agree, it's not necessary for a good build, some refinements can help but they are simple things, like the reinforcing of the panel line or thinning parts.!
What a great build, James! It's unbelievable that this is in 1/72 scale. 👌You make it all look so easy. Once again, like all your builds, it's a great tutorial.
The paint looks like real wood. Also, airbrushing skill makes the paint go easy. Over the years in paint and modeling, you have built up unique skills. Your wethering skill has put envy to other modelers, even me. Would you consider doing tutorials in your future. Sign me up. Myself, I model HO trains. However, Ì have modeled aircraft once in a while. Mike
It’s not good. It is freaking GREAT! 😆 Bi-plane rigging in any scale scares me but I’m going to take the plunge. Builds like yours are the inspiration and kick in the pants I need. Much thanks. 😊
This was a 100% excellent build, as for the scale too small for me, I wished I had have broight o e of WNW kits before they went 'belly up' , keep doing what yoy are doing, again a excellent build, bedt regards from a Kiwi living in Australia 👌👍👌👍👌👍
Good Friday afternoon… From OHIO 🇺🇸 I’ve rigged a couple of aircraft 1/72 Spad and 1/144 Japanese seaplane… Tough going for sure… BUT, the final results are VERY MUCH WORTH IT… I am a subscriber, I’ve learned a lot from watching your channel… Would like to try making stencils for markings… I’ll probably watch this again…. Incredible build! Thank you for sharing your techniques. You’ve answered so many questions I’ve had about painting biplanes as I return to the hobby after 50 years. I’m building 1/48. I think there are more subjects available in 1/72 but it’s too small for my old hands and eyes.
First thing, from the star I was sure, You will win. :D Second: result is absolutely gorgeous. Really great done. Especially keeping in mind it is 1/72 scale. TOKO is forgotten company, but I remember how great was my shock, when I saw they made instructions in CAD even in 1998 (I have An-74 from that company). They are surprisingly good. Overall, result is perfect. All the best for You! ;)
I am pleased with your work and skill. Not everyone will be able to assemble an old model. (The "Eastern Express" has been terribly preserved to this day - "Firewood" in one word. )
Nice build! I like the frame effect with the PC12. Thanks for taking the time to document your build for us. These Toko/Roden/Eastern 1/72 WWI models are quite charming and reasonably priced compared to Eduard. (Eduard 1/72 WWI are such a pleasure to build though...) I bought a stack of these little Tokos from a buddy downsizing a couple of years ago and have yet to build any. The 45 degree crosshatch fabric surfaces are a bit pronounced. After seeing this build I plan to use high build surfacer and sand a bit to get rid of that texture.
Excellent job, James.....the outcome of your labour is sensational and, for such a small scale! Nothing more needed on this kit....the result says it all.
Looks pretty good to me James, excellent result from an old limited run kit - only thing I would have done differently is made it British....!! 😊Nice to see a good RU-vid video on something other than the newest super kit - it's inspired me to get back to my stalled Airfix 1/72 Brisfit! Keith
Excellent, I build 1/72 and 1/32 biplanes and you did a good job on the painting and rigging. The 1/2 strutter has one of the easier wing assembles, Try two or four bay or latice tails for extra grief!
Found the info I needed: "Photographs have emerged of captured Sopwith aircraft in German markings - ‘Strutter’ A1914 at Alderschof after it was captured last September when the pilot got lost on its delivery flight, ran out of fuel and landed in German territory and 3(N) Sqdn ‘Pup’ N6161 shot down 1st February this year. Both pilots are prisoners of war." That was from Kingston Aviation, Sopwith Day by Day which is online if anyone wants to see the pics. 'Aldershof' is most likely a misprint of Adlershof, an airfield in Berlin.
Thanks Simon ! I found that blog when researching this one, there seems to be another one with fully green sides and a linen patch around the serial number. I couldn't find pics of my specific version. Good luck with the builds, bit more wiggle room in 48th
@@lpjmodels yes I'd noticed that Toko changed the serial number to A1913 as well. I've had a good Google and can't find any other photos of her, how dug this up from Kingston Aviation too: "On 13th September 54 Squadron’s A1914 on its delivery flight from Castle Bromwich to St Omer gets lost in cloud, runs out of fuel and lands near Thielt in German territory. It is captured intact and sent to Alderschof for evaluation. 2nd Lt A F Organ is taken prisoner of war." 54 Sqn RFC was based at Castle Bromwich and moved to the Western Front by December 1916. Wiki lists them as flying Pups hower.
Great build and a wonderful video showing all the techniques used. I also loved the “I quickly knocked up a gun mount in fusion 360” comment. I can barely create a square box using CAD 😳🤪 let alone a replacement kit part!
Well I think she is stunning, what a loverly video. I tend to use packing sponge for wood grain, have you tried that method? works better on larger scales in fairness wonder if you had tried it?
I have not tried that yet, I like carving the brush through the paint to make the grain, its a bit theraputic , I'll have to give it a go on a future build
It's unquestionable that your build deserves an award, but I don't think that's the purpose of scale modelling. The purpose is to enjoy a build, perhaps learn a few more things about our skills and interact with fellow scale modellers to exchange views and opinions. Again, my kudos for your excellent build.
It's just for fun, none of us were competing for anything really, I would have been happy to come last as long as everyone had fun and enjoyed trying something new
