Mr. Gabriel Suranyi dedicated a total of nineteen (19) years of detailed craftsmanship to complete the building of this 1/72 scale, sixteen foot long, five foot wide, four foot high carrier. The Model was featured on the front page and fold-out centerfold in the March 1997, 15th-year-edition of FineScale Modeler magazine. The U.S. Navy also ferried the builder, Gabe Suranyi, via a C-2A to the USS Enterprise about 200 miles off Norfolk in September 1997. Gabe resided on the USS Enterprise for two days compliments of the ship's Captain.

Fantastic model. Huge in 1/72 scale. Can't imagine the hundreds of hours making this all come together. Each one of those planes take many hours to do right just by themselves. The ship itself is detailed to the max with the railings, crew figures and the overall attention to detail throughout the model. It truly is a masterpiece of a model. Thank you for sharing this video

Try thousands of hours. I normally spend about 40 hours building such Navy fighters on average. Given my experience on building one off custom scratch built models as well as kit models to a professional degree I can see this modeler spending over 5000 hours on this model over 5 years. That's averaging 4 to 5 hours every day in his modelling studio. This is an epic labor of love .

This model was built by one man over the course of a decade. Once news of this masterpiece got out the CO of the USS Enterprise invited the builder to spend a weekend aboard the carrier. This model was donated to the museum when the builder had to sell his house and move into a senior center. I don’t remember all the exact details but a Google search would probably do it.

I know the builder. He didn’t have to sell his house, he and his wife simply downsized and moved locally to a 55+ community. They have a lovely house, just smaller than what they had before.

Back when I was still in uniform I was able to pay a courtesy visit to ENTERPRISE and that was quite memorable. It wasn't too many years after that when she was decommissioned. :-( So I am glad that I didn't pass up on the chance. It is a sad quirk of life that we tend to think "oh, I can skip it for now, there be another chance later."

The model, mostly completed in 2003, represents the USS Enterprise and Air-Wing 11 during the ships’ 1989 cruise. Top deck of the carrier is finished in rough grip surface. Over 6000 tie-downs are on the top deck and 5000 in the hangar bay. The tie-downs have been obtained from a British Company named PP Airoparts, unfortunately they discontinued operations in the early 90’s. Many other parts were die cast in New Jersey.

FIRSTLY, 'James G' Thanks for posting this video, it is EXCELLENTLY Detailed!! Secondly, Mr. Suranyi, you have Done a SUPERIOR Job, as a fellow modeller, I will study this video...Extensively, when " I " build my USS ENTERPRISE CVN-65, I also plan on building it to This timeline.....BUT.....my model will be Much, much smaller...in 1/700 scale. Mr. Suranyi, your Work has inspired me into getting to this model .... Quickly.... I have an Uncle that served on Her, before the modifications, back in the early 60s..during the time of the "quarantine" (Blockade) of Cuba.
