I would say it looses just about 15 percentage overnight when on sleep mode. But tbh you wouldn’t fairly notice the drain when using it after sometime. Although I have changed to crucial p2 which has better read/write speed and battery drain ver very minimal
AMAZING!!!! Perfect explanation, no bullshit video. Thanks! (btw love how your accent seems to jump from sounding Chinese one minute and German the next minute)
DONT EVER DO THIS WAY! the bottom cover is supposed to work as a giant heatsink for the CPU, Now with this temporary "workaround", The SSD is taking all the heat, it will either lead to the CPU overheat or SSD components being dissoldered or both. The adapter is designed for M.2 2242, 2230 SSDs, not this long sausage
u can add heatstrips like what he put on the ssd to the cpu and pipes :) this will allow the cover to act as heat dissipation wouldn't it? my only gripe with going with this adapter solution as opposed to buying original macbook A1708 ssds is that it won't run windows via bootcamp as this particular adapter doesn't support windows os.
@@superjamesworld Are on Big Sur or Catalina still? Your feedback worries me as I’m yet to install that Sabrent 2242 and currently am already on Big Sur.
@@time1187 False alarm. Something wasn't connected correctly internally. The board had been removed previously to fix the USB ports. (which had also caused an issue with the internal mic) I went around the visible connectors on the board and both issues with the mic and sleep are now solved. Sabrent Rocket nano 1TB on Big Sur working fine.
Set your new NVMe drive to your default startup disk in system prefs and the boot delay should be gone. The Apple logo is taking so long because your system is still prioritizing/looking for your old SSD.
Hi bro, I have a problem, if I shutdown my MacBook Pro 2017 with the charger plugged in and turn it on again with the charger plugged I get the folder with question icon... so my ssd is not detected. but if I disconnect and connect charger everything works fine, can you help me?
Thanks for the video, just now I've been upgrading my macbook, it's better to use an 2242 M.2 SSD, it's more difficult and expensive to find a bigger ssd (1TB or 2TB) but it's more recommended. Probably you must say in the video that it's temporary solution.
my a1708 i bought the 512gb sabrent rocket 2242 copied your video and cloned it when adaptor arrived. I installed it would boot half way bar and shut off so i did command r did a format and re installed mac os it error out towards the end re started and it went thru, then i tried to finish set up and it turned off and flashed a folder icon with a Question mark did comand r again and the drive would not show up. I open the mac again took out the adaptor and drive and put it back and it finally boot all the way and now im using it. God be with me and this adapter. On the plus side I can tell the difference everything is faster. on black magic write speed went from 600 to 1384 mb per sec.
Hi! im having this problem but only if shutdown my MacBook with charger plugged in and turn it back on with the charger plugged... if I unplug and plug charger the Mac works very well. Can you please test this in your MacBook? shutdown your Mac WITH the charger connected and press power button to start it again. Thank you!
Brilliant! Finally we can upgrade our SSDs. But I am a little concerned about the additional thickness the adapter brings to the case. It may be too much tension for the logic board over time? Also how to preinstall MacOS on the new SSD? Thanks for the video.
Thanks Johnny. Those are valid concerns! It will be perfect if we can find 2242 drive that's compatible. As for the preinstallation process, it may require another video to document the process. I will try.
After alot of messing around I managed to plug my 4TB SATA SSD into the adaptor, I never thought it was going to fit and the bottom cover would not fit properly but with a bit of duct tape I now have 4TB of storage.
Great Video, thank you. Can I ask whether the SSD will overheat with the electric tape on? I was going to use Kapton tape, but will it block any necessary ventilation? Thank for your reply
I have wd sn 530 ssd 256 gb installed with macOS Monetery but i have problems waking from sleep and karnel panic... What is your suggestion , what should i do ? Expect sleep / hibernate everything works as normal.. Is there any way to disable sleep mode(last option ) or i should buy new drive ? Also are 256gb even working with this method?
Hello! I've been doing a lot of reading about this, since I also want to upgrade my A1708. Does that NFHK adapter work well for you with the WD SSD? Do you have any power, hibernation or question mark after boot issues? I'm also considering Kioxia BG4 SSD, since it's easier for my to buy than the WD one (I'm in Europe) and it was also highly recommended by my local Apple Certified Technician. If I go through with this, he will be doing the upgrade, since I don't trust myself enough to.
I did it exactly like you but i still get the questionmark after booting. The ssd also does not show up in my drive selection when i want to set it as the main drive after i pressed cmdr + r. What should i do?
After some testing, I noticed one issue -MacBook cannot wake up in sleep mode. This is a known issue in the some previous gen models using NMVE. I will do more testing and searching for a solution.
Today I've tested with Samsung PM991 and didn't work. Mac turned off after 10-12 Minutes during the new macOS installation or Backup restore process. Also, the SSD was heated. I couldn't touch it. But mac identified SSD and I've formatted it. During format, it's also turned off. I want to try also with WD SN520 but currently, 512GB isn't available in Germany. I've seen in some online shops but the delivery time is 10-15 weeks.
Have you upgraded to Mac OS Big Sur with the sabrent drive in the adapter? If yes any particular issues? Want to upgrade but want to make sure it works well with Mac OS 11.01 Big Sur. Thanks for letting me know
I just did this upgrade but when I put the aluminium shell back on, the whole back wasn't flush, there was a small gap. Did you find it a problem that your SSD made the profile too high so the case wouldn't fit back on. I was using a 1TB WD Blue drive.
Hi Leo Everyday Tech, I have a problem, if I shutdown my MacBook Pro 2017 with the charger plugged in and turn it on again with the charger plugged I get the folder with question icon... so my ssd is not detected. but if I disconnect and connect charger everything works fine ! Im using a sabrent 512gb
I was told my SSD was soldered in to my MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports). Can I upgrade or not? It's head doing getting this memory full pop up every 30 seconds
i tried this, but found out the ssd i've bought is too big. so i decided to put the apple ssd back in. however now i cannot power on the macbook anymore... any suggestions?
I had the same and noticed that I damaged the battery daughter board cable during the replacement. Quickly bought a new one from ebay and now it works.
I currently have a spare addlink s70 2280 nvme SSD. Do you think that upgrading to a 2280 would cause any long term problems? You can find the specific model on amazon at www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07K7LRB2T/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I use Mac Fan Control to monitor the temperature. Everything is normal during the period of my testing. Strongly recommend using a temperature monitoring app to minimize the risk.
@@LeoEverydayTech i want to know one more thing I installed wd sn850 I’m getting 2000 write and 2400 write speed does macbook support this much only or is it ssd issue ?
Hi Leo, I followed your tutorial and everything was great. I installed a Sabrent 2243 2tb, but my battery is started to drain very fast in sleep mode ,around 20-25% in 24h. And couple of times when I turn on it’s appear the folder with questions mark, does not recognise the ssd and I need to reset NVRAM to be recognised again. Does anyone have this issue?
Installed a sabrent rocket 2242 500gb. Working however i get intermittant flashing question mark on startup. Will eventually startup after turn on off a few times but i cant continue using this mac like this. I even reformatted ssd again etc and still same problem. Fan will come on then flashing question mark happens again. Any tips mac geeks please? Format apfs/Guid.
@@LeoEverydayTech thanks for your quick reply leo! Very helpful. Looks like i will be removing that rocket rubbish asap and getting your recommendation! Cheers
nope, you can’t swap out your SSD’s. While your 2015 or older Retina model has a removable SSD, the newer 2016 onward Touch Bar systems have soldered storage which can’t be altered. Message from apple: support our sales buy a new MacBook
Hey, i bought the same adapter but not the same ssd, if i boot to the bios and reinstall sierra its doesnt show me the partition. Can Someone Help Me? Thanks
@@LeoEverydayTech okey, the problem is i cant install sierra because its not showing me the ssd, is there any option to download sierra from the „bios“ ?
Hi Leo thanks for your videos its help me a lot .. By the way can you send me the link of Where dis you buy the Skin protector of your MacBook ? thank I already have in my wish list the ssd and the adapter, I choose the Sabrent 2242 for 149$ on eBay
Watched your other videos on this series and I saw you that you are using the WD SN520. I am planning on getting the same! have you encountered any issues with it? My MBP 2017 's SSD is slowly dying (no startup disk found errors)
@@LeoEverydayTech It seems like sn520 2230 and 2242 look the same (just with spare space for 2242) and have same specs (from wd website). I’ll try it and report to you.
I install and try the sn520 2230 256Mb on a1708 late 2016. Speed (tested with atto) is 1.6 GB/s read and 1.1 GB/s write (chunk of 2-32 MB). Temperature is between 35-36 celsius (normal operation) and up to 51-52 on stress test
Sometimes writing speed slows down to 500-550 MB/s (while reading speed stays at 1,600) but no relation to temperature (i would have think of speed throttling when temperature are higher)
After a few days of using, performance is consistent and temperature never pass the 47-48 degrees celsius, staying usually around 36/37. I’m very satisfied. I was told my MacBook pro needed logic board replacement (keeping on crashing and not detecting internal ssd), but replacing the internal ssd with adapter and a used 256GB wd sn520 (less than 50 dollars total) gave the macbook pro new life and very good speed.
I'm just curious, would you mind to ellaborate your statement "Please note that the 2280 SSD is for testing purposes only and not recommended for long term use. "
for those wondering, I've found one on wish which ships the product internationally from China. I've already placed an order and hoping to get it by the end of July.
@@raphaq9192 It was about 15$. also, as update, it is still in transit and should reach my place by the end of July (yeah too long)

I damaged my MacBook pro two times while trying to replace the SSD. It looks very easy but it's not so if you don't know what you're doing please don't try. I was lucky now mine is working :) Don't use Sabrent Rocket NVMe PCIe M.2 2280. It doesn't work properly.
How exactly did you damaged it? Disconnecting the battery? Or taking off the ssd?

@@maarcvaalmaarcvaal8325 On my first attempt I took off one of the sockets from the motherboard. Luckily I found some guys who do micro soldering. On my second attempt I damaged the battery cable. Replaced it with a new one from ebay. I am not a hardware guy as you could understand :D
@ I was thinking changing the ssd without disconnecting the battery (which is tricky) but letting the battery completely drain so not having any discharge
3 года назад
@@maarcvaalmaarcvaal8325 It is absolutely tricky if you don't have any experience. The power cable is so sensitive and it's hard to put it back. Your solution sounds good but may not be the best one. Good luck.
Hold down "Cmd R" to boot into recovery mode. See if the NVME SSD can be recognized. If not, use my recent "best practice" video as a guideline for troubleshooting.
The adapter will NOT ruin your MacBook if it's flawed. Your MacBook just won't boot up because it's not reading the NVME SSD correctly due to malfunction in the adapter. This is just the memory. It can't short circuit the CPU. Your giving misinformation out that's not needed.
The solution to the problem that you had: (SSD being too long) is to buy the proper size SSD. Buying an m.2 2240 is what you should do, and you'll be able to use the included mounting on the adaptor
Cordell Ruzewski , for example: I could buy a adapter like this: www.amazon.com/-/es/Cablecc-M-Key-Convert-MacBook-A1708/dp/B089VVZ9YR/ref=sr_1_5?__mk_es_US=ÅMÅŽÕÑ&dchild=1&keywords=ssd+adapter+MacBook+pro+A1708&qid=1596209293&sr=8-5, and a SSD like this: www.amazon.com/Sabrent-DRAM-Less-Internal-Performance-SB-1342-512/dp/B07XVR1KKR And it would be possible to substitute my 126 original disk in a MacBook Pro of 2017? Thank you for your response
I don't recommend NVME 2280 SSD (including 970evo) as a long term solution, because (a) the bottom cover won't be perfectly flat, and (b) the potential risk of thermal issues.
@@LeoEverydayTech What nvme from samsung would you recommend. Ive tried to do some research for some form fitting ones similar to the one you showcased in your part 3 but couldnt find anything?
That guy is about to use Samsung 970 Evo. :D forums.macrumors.com/threads/help-never-seen-before-trying-to-install-m-2-ssd-on-mid-2017-mbp-a1708.2239050
Why did you skip the whole part of actually getting the new memory up and running with your system?. You showed nothing but " Plug and play" and that's not how it works. Your going to make people think they don't have to backup their devices, and then delete the new drive, rename it and then install MacOs again BEFORE the memory is actually readable and your MacBook functions again.
